Get Connected with a Hot Spot & Chromebook!

Starting in mid-October the Pasadena Public Library will have Chromebooks and Wi-Fi hotspots available for checkout at every branch library. The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library raised money for the purchase of 110 hotspots for use throughout the library system, while the La Pintoresca Library Associates funded the purchase of additional Chromebooks for the La Pintoresca Branch Library. The additions are a welcome part of the Library’s effort to bridge the digital divide for those without access to the internet.

As a mobile device, a hotspot provides a Wi-Fi link to the internet from any location. Hotspots can also provide Wi-Fi service to nearby devices simultaneously, which can benefit other household members. Chromebooks are laptops that can connect to the internet through any accessible Wi-Fi network— including the one you create with a hotspot.

The devices will be available to the public starting in mid- October to library patrons with a valid library card. The checkout period is four weeks. One hotspot and one Chromebook can be checked out per card. Patrons must provide a signed lending agreement form in order to be able to check these items out. After the lending agreement is signed by the responsible party, a hotspot and/or Chromebook can be checked out with just the library card.

All Pasadena Public Libraries will be CLOSED in observance of: Labor Day – Sunday & Monday, Sept. 5 & 6 • Labor Day

Pasadena Central Library closed May 3rd, 2021, due to seismic retrofit needs Did you know that the Pasadena Public Library was formed years before Pasadena officially became a city?

The Pasadena Public Library was originally called the “Pasadena Library and Village Improvement Society” and was founded on December 26th, 1882. Residents funded the library by purchasing shares for as little as $5. The first library opened February 26, 1884, located on the south side of Colorado St. between Raymond St. and the Santa Fe tracks.

On June 19, 1886, the City of Pasadena was incorporated. Now that Pasadena was a city, residents required serv- ices such as utilities, fire and emergency response, roads, the maintenance of public space – and yes, our library.

Pasadena City Hall Civic Auditorium Central Library In June of 1923, voters approved a bond for $3.5 million to fund the construction of City Hall, Civic Auditorium, and the Central Library. The Central Library was completed in 1927. It was designed by Myron Hunt and H.C. Chambers; whose notable works also include the Huntington Library and Occidental College.

Today, the Pasadena Central Library is supported with nine additional neighborhood branch libraries. However, during a recent seismic inspection by city building officials, it was determined the nearly 100 year-old Central Library needed a significant retrofit and restoration. While awaiting the repairs, the Central Library was closed on May 3rd, 2021 for the safety of patrons and library staff. The City will be working with a historic preservation consultant and managing a team of architectural design experts to move forward with a seismic rehabilitation project.

While the Central Library remains closed, the nine branch libraries remain open and continue to offer in-person, curbside pickup or on-line access to books and periodicals, collections, language arts, career and personal development programs, computers, internet access, and a gathering space for members of the community 2 to connect.
