Race Walking Record – August 2015 International also clinched my third qualifying time, as well as going from ranked 42nd to finishing 24t! I also was the 8th European athlete to finish, moving up 4 places from last year’s 12th at the Europeans in . So there were some positives and obvious development. It has shown just how far I have come, that I can finish 24th at Worlds and be disappointed. In last event of the day, the M60’s, were coach, judge and athlete Chris Hobbs (Ashford AC) and Malcolm Martin (Surrey WC). Chris finished in the frustrating 4th place with a time of 26:03.17 but had the satisfaction of beating New Zealander Mike Parker, well known to many in the UK from his time here, who recorded a time of 26:05.63. Malcolm finished in 13th in 27:57.22, another step in his rapid progress from runner to a very good race walker. When it came Kate responded and soon it was just Kate and Valerie Boban of France drawing away. With 3k to go Boban had opened up a slight gap of just 7 seconds which grew to 29 seconds at the finish. Kate's 55:37 was a great performance and the delight she showed standing on the podium was a clear indication she wants more and won't be satisfied next time with the lowest step. Naomi Sharma (Abingdon AC), one of four Abingdon ladies here, also had a good performance in the same race and age group recording a massive personal best finishing 24th in 67:40. Britain had eight walkers in the combined W50 - 60 Race and we were able to organise two teams as a result of moving Cath Duhig (W60) to join the W50 team. Under WMA rules if a nation is unable to field a team of three in an age group, it is allowable to move up to two walkers down from a higher age group to make up a team. Moving someone from a lower age group to a higher age group is not allowed and everyone in a team must walk in the same race. Noel was just a few seconds slower in her race (W65+) finishing 4th in 66:53. 20km (Fri. 14th Aug.) Conditions were far from easy for any of the day’s races. Although it appeared a good day with the temperature down in the mid 20's humidity was high and the sun came out as the day progressed. Times were slow as a result but the competition was intense with many retirements. The women’s race got underway at 8am. Maureen Noel (W50) was fastest in 2:08:355 walking strongly and looking good. She was backed up in the W50 team by Angela Martin who recorded a personal best of 2:19:24 finishing in 16th alongside Anne Jones in the same time. Competitors came from far and wide, Australia, USA, South Africa, UK, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Ultimately, Isle of Man domiciled Irishman Vinny Lynch won a race full of surprises in which the red hot favourite, Richard Gerrard, retired with a pulled hamstring in his left leg approaching half- distance. Hospital GP Dave Walker took over the reins for a short stretch before he simply ran out of energy. Lynch took over and emerged from the hours of darkness with a sizeable lead that he defended all the way to the finish shortly after 9am on Sunday.
