REVIEW ARTICLES Periclean Athens Gabriel Herman Lorel J. Samons II (ed.), The Cambridge Companion to the Age of Pericles . Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2007. xx + 343 pp. ISBN 978-0-521-00389-6 (paperback); 978-0-521-80793-7 (hardback). This companion to the age of Pericles, dated roughly 450-428 B.C., brings together eleven articles by a distinguished gallery of specialists, its declared aim being ‘to provoke as much as to inform, to stimulate the reader to further inquiry rather than to put matters to rest’ (xvii). Even though these specialists do not always see eye to eye in their judgments, their discord does not normally surface in the essays, and the end result is a coherent overview of Athenian society which succeeds in illuminating an important chapter of Greek history. This evaluation does not however apply to the book’s ‘Introduction’ and especially not to its ‘Conclusion’ (‘Pericles and Athens’), written by the editor himself. Here Samons, rather than weaving the individual contributions into a general conclusion, restates assessments of Athenian democracy that he has published elsewhere (see 23 n. 73). These are often at odds with most previous evaluations of Periclean Athens and read more like exhortations to praiseworthy behavior than historical analyses. In this review article I will comment briefly on the eleven chapters and then return to Samons’ views, my more general theme being the issue of historical judgment. Reminding us that democracy and empire often appear as irreconcilable opposites to the modern mind, Peter Rhodes in his dense, but remarkably lucid Chapter 1 (‘Democracy and Empire’) addresses the question of the relationship between Athens’ democracy and fifth-century empire. -

Fascinated by the inextricable blend of historicity and personality that emerges from Livy‖s text, I immediately directed my attention toward Polybius 18. Plutarch‖s Life of Flamininus was the next logical step. Although I was not destined to pursue an academic career, the deep impression left on me by these authors endured over the following years. Themistocles persuades the Athenians to complete fortifications at Piraeus, begun in 492; while Cimon promotes cooperation with Sparta, Themistocles hostile to the hegemon of the Peloponnesian and Hellenic leagues; attempts to rouse anti-Spartan feelings. -

584 THE STROMATA, OR MISCELLANIES BOOK 1 CHAPTER 1 PREFACE THE AUTHOR’S OBJECT THE UTILITY OF WRITTEN COMPOSITIONS [Wants the beginning ]..........that you may read them under your hand, and may be able to preserve them. Whether written compositions are not to be left behind at all; or if they are, by whom? And if the former, what need there is for written compositions? and if the latter, is the composition of them to be assigned to earnest men, or the opposite? It were certainly ridiculous for one to disapprove of the writing of earnest men, and approve of those, who are not such, engaging in the work of composition. Theopompus and Timaeus, who composed fables and slanders, and Epicurus the leader of atheism, and Hipponax and Archilochus, are to be allowed to write in their own shameful manner. But he who proclaims the truth is to be prevented from leaving behind him what is to benefit posterity. It is a good thing, I reckon, to leave to posterity good children. This is the case with children of our bodies. But words are the progeny of the soul. Hence we call those who have instructed us, fathers. Wisdom is a communicative and philanthropic thing. Accordingly, Solomon says, “My son, if thou receive the saying of my commandment, and hide it with thee, thine ear shall hear wisdom.” He points out that the word that is sown is hidden in the soul of the learner, as in the earth, and this is spiritual planting. Wherefore also he adds, “And thou shalt apply thine heart to understanding, and apply it for the admonition of thy son.” For soul, me thinks, joined with soul, and spirit with spirit, in the sowing of the word, will make that which is sown grow and germinate. -

8 Mirabilia and Personal Names MICHAEL CRAWFORD NAMES THAT ARE APPROPRIATE, that speak as well as name, are a feature already of Homer and Old Comedy, for instance,1 and are indeed explicitly referred to by Antiphanes;2 there is thereafter a long tradition of discussion of such names, from Aristotle and Aristophanes of Byzantium, via Plautus, to Pliny the Elder and Donatus.3 Mirabilia, or tall stories, are also a genre with a long and disreputable history in the ancient world, beginning, I suppose, with the pseudo-Aristotelian On wonderful things heard of. Just to give a flavour of the genre in its early years—we shall see what it can produce in the hellenistic period—the people of Athens knew immediately one day that there had been a great battle in Thessaly, because all the carrion crows disappeared. All sorts of works need people with names, not least the novel. Here— and I owe my information to Ewen Bowie—the choice of names is princi- pally from a repertoire with essentially literary allusions. The Satyricon of Petronius, on the other hand, is more complicated. The choice of names there was discussed by S. Priuli, in the work I have already cited, and characterized as a combination of the realistic and the fantastic, with a recurring theme of sexual allusion;4 some names are so far unknown else- where, Hesus, Mammaea (as a male name), Proselenos, Scissa, and, of course, the name Trimalchio itself.5 But Petronius on the whole chooses actual 1 S. i Lucian‟s Paradoxa: Fiction, Aesthetics, and Identity A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Classics of the College of Arts and Sciences by Valentina Popescu BA University of Iasi June 2009 Committee Chair: Kathryn J. Gutzwiller, Professor of Classics Abstract This dissertation represents a novel approach to the Lucianic corpus and studies paradox, with rhetorical, philosophical, and aesthetic implications, as Lucian‟s distinctive discursive mode of constructing cultural identity and literary innovation. While criticizing paradoxography - the literature of wonders - as true discourse, Lucian creates a novel, avowed false, discourse, as a form of contemplation and regeneration of the Greek literary tradition. Paradoxography is Lucian‟s favorite self-referential discourse in prolaliai, rhetorical introductions, where he strives to earn doxa through paradoxa - paradigms of exoticism applied to both author and work. Lucian elevates paradox from exotic to aesthetic, from hybrid novelty to astonishing beauty, expecting his audience to sublimate the experience of ekplexis from bewilderment to aesthetic pleasure. Lucian‟s construction of cultural identity, as an issue of tension between Greek and barbarian and between birthright and paideutic conquest, is predicated on paradoxology, a first- personal discourse based on rhetorical and philosophical paradox. While the biography of the author insinuates itself into the biography of the speaker, Lucian creates tension between macro- text and micro-text. Auctoritas and Thaumasia: Authority in the Genre of Paradoxography The genre of paradoxography, the cataloguing of wondrous phenomena, has traditionally received little attention from Classicists, and the attention which it has received tends to marginalize the genre as the tabloid literature of the ancient world. The content of the paradoxograhical works, with their fabulous reports of live centaurs, three- headed babies, hermaphrodites, and ghosts challenges the modern reader steeped in the rationality found in other prose genres, such as historiography, geography, and philosophy. Although himself skeptical of the value of the paradoxographical genre, Aulus Gellius, writing in the second century AD, provides the modern reader with a unique window into the reception of such texts in the ancient world. Gellius relates a charming anecdote about his acquisition and reading of paradoxographical texts [Aul.Gell.9.4]. While passing through Brundisium, he comes across a trove of such works as he browses in a bookstall. After purchasing the tattered and moldering volumes, Gellius spends the subsequent night losing sleep to pour over these texts. In the morning, Gellius’ determines that such works, while seductive, are of little intellectual value. Despite this indictment, the vivid and atmospheric terms with which Gellius describes his encounter with paradoxography make it clear that the genre appeals more to the reader’s emotional than his or her rational mind. Nevertheless, one of the problematic features of such texts, one which has undoubtedly played a part in modern scholars’ dismissal of the genre, is precisely their constant appeal to the world of science. In fact, a defining feature of the genre is its culling of material predominantly from the scientific texts of big-name Peripatetic and Alexandrian scholars such as Aristotle, Theophrastus, and Callimachus.
