April 2015 Page 6 Introduction

Electric motors perform a variety of functions that were formerly consigned to cranks, gears and levers. They are typically found in anything that has an electrical movement or solenoid function – such as window-lifts, fuel pumps, mirror and headlamp adjusters, ABS, clutches, automated manual transmissions, parking brakes and steering systems. The trend toward electric cars mean vehicles require more small motors, too.

Bosch estimates that some of today's premium vehicles feature over XXX electric motors carrying out a variety of functions.

Although electric motors have long since been used to power certain vehicle componentry, such as wiper systems, these markets have matured. Meanwhile, growth markets are appearing. For example, manufacturers predict significant growth with gearbox actuators (used for double clutch automated transmissions, actuation for transfer cases and torque distribution differential gears), power steering motors and electric machines for hybrid vehicles.

Manufacturers also expect to see more DC electric motors used in automotive interiors in the future, since there is a general trend towards more electrification. This means that many manual functions, even in the lower vehicle segments, will increasingly be electrically operated. Meanwhile, the use of actuators is also on the rise. Particularly when it comes to convenience features, such as backrest adjusters, the new electric actuators are becoming increasingly prevalent.

In the power window department, manufacturers report a growing need for smaller, lighter motors to fit in the increasingly slim doors of modern cars. On the wiper motor front, manufacturers note that reductions in weight and size as well as the improvement of exterior appearance are priorities for windscreen washer systems. ManufacturSers of brushless DC motorsAMPLE are also pushing to develop smaller motors yet maintain power and speed.

The main manufacturers of electric motors include Inteva Products, Bosch, Brose, Denso, Globe Motors, Johnson Electric, Mitsuba and Nidec. This section sets out some thumbnail profiles of the main players and concludes with a summary of the electric motors supplied by each company.

Robert Bosch GmbH

Headquartered in Buehlertal, Germany, Bosch’s Electrical Drives division develops and manufactures mechatronic components and systems for body applications, including:

• Actuators for window lifting, seat adjustment and sunroof actuation; • Blower modules and drives for engine cooling fans; • Pumps and valves for engine cooling systems; • Components for air-conditioning; • Front and rear wiper drives, wiper arms and wiper blades; • ElectricS steering motors, motorsAMPLE for ABS, ESP and eBikes. Bosch supplies the electric motors for EPS systems, while the joint venture ZF Lenksysteme supplies complete steering systems.

Bosch produces around XXm electric motors annually to power windows fitted to cars worldwide. Its main plant is located in Buhl, Southwest Germany. In addition, Bosch produces electric motors at its factories in Mexico, South Korea, Brazil, South Africa and China (Suzhou).

Bosch supplies its power window motors in a number of different versions.

April 2015 Page 8 Markets

We see a number of trends and drivers shaping the passenger car and light vehicle electric motors sector, including:

• It is estimated that the average car has around XX electric motors - many due to motorists’ insatiable demand for greater comfort and convenience. In a top-range Mercedes-Benz, for example, there are around ten motors in each seat. • As with so many other car components and systems, the major technical advances in electric motors and drives focus on units which are smaller, lighter and quieter. • Electric motors perform a variety of functions that were formerly consigned to cranks, gears and levers. They are typically found in anything that has an electrical movement or solenoid function - such as window-lifts, fuel pumps, mirror and headlamp adjusters, ABS, clutches, automated manual transmissions, parking brakes and steering systems. • Although electric motors have long since been used to power certain vehicle componentry, growth markets are appearing. For example, manufacturers predict significant growth with gearbox actuators (used for double clutch automated transmissions, actuation for transfer cases and torque distribution differential gears), power steering motors and electric machines for hybrid vehicles. • Manufacturers also expect to see more DC electric motors used in automotive interiors in the future, since there is a general trend towards more electrification. etY when used for comfort and convenience systems in the vehicle's interior, an important development goal is to make the motors as quiet as possible. Motors that run a lot of the time, such as blowers, also need to be highly efficient. • In the power window department, manufacturers report a growing need for smaller, lighter motors to fit in the increasingly slim doors of modern cars. • On the wiper motor front, manufacturers note that reductions in weight and size as well as the improvement of exterior appearance are priorities for windscrSeen washer systems. According to Nidec, there are two kinds of DC motors: brush and brushless.

Brushless DC motors differ from conventional brush DC motors in that the current which produces mechanical energy is applied to stationary coils via electronic switches without physical contact with the rotor, rather than stationary rods brushing against the rotating coil. Nidec points out that conventional brush DC motors have several limitations: brush life, brush residue, maximum speed and electrical noise. By avoiding friction, sparks and the wearing and fragmenting of the brush rods, brushless DC motors provide cleaner, faster, more efficient and quieter operation and longer maintenance-free life than conventional rush DC motors.

Although brushless DC motors have many advantages over brush DC motors, Nidec says the use of brushless DC motors is still mainly confined to precision applications in disc drives and industrial motion equipment that require high efficiency, smooth operation and precise speed control.

Besides standard brushless DC motors, mainly found in body and convenience areas of the vehicle, manufacturers report that permanent magnet brushless DC motors are already standard (for power steering and drives for hybrid vehicles) or will gain major importance (such as for gearbox actuation).

New applications

Brose capacitive liftgate switch Brose Shas developed capacitiveAMPLE liftgate switch. A capacitive sensor below the bumper responds to a simple foot movement and passes this information to the keyless entry control unit in the vehicle. This checks the key holder’s authority and transmits the signal to the boot lid control unit to automatically open the lid.

Compact DC motors from Johnson Electric

In December 2010, Johnson Electric introduced a compact DC electric motor product line which, it claims, delivers the ’s highest power density. The new product line is based on the company’s so-called ‘curve technology’ which uses a four pole magnetic design in a curved package which reduces motor size and weight. Johnson Electric says its compact DC motor reduces weight by XX% in a package that is XX percent smaller with the same power as standard DC motors. Its automotive applications include window lifts, steering wheel locks, door locks and HVAC actuators.

Compact steering motors from Mitsubishi Electric

According to Mitsubishi Electric, some XX% of new vehicles manufactured worldwide now incorporate electric power steering, which can reduce fuel cost by X - X% compared to those using hydraulic steering. OEMs are calling for motors and controllers that are much smaller and lighter than current components to further improve fuel efficiency and facilitate installation of power steering systems.o T fulfill these needs, Mitsubishi Electric has integrated the motor and controller into one unit, and aligned them on the same axis by improving the internal structure of the controller.

In November 2010, Mitsubishi Electric claimed it has developed the world's smallest and lightest motor controller unit for automotive electric power steering. The company added that its then next generation motor controller unit is half in volume and XX% in weight compared to the company's then productS line-up with equal output.AMPLE
