In 1795, the brothers Abraham and Benjamin Goldsmid started campaigning for funds for a major Jewish poor relief scheme. Some 12 years later, the money they had raised was used to establish the Jews’ Hospital at Mile End, “to uplift the morals and occupations of the young poor”. By 1860, there were 100 boys and 40 girls at the Jews’ Hospital and larger premises were needed. In 1866, the new building in West Norwood was opened. This year, Norwood is celebrating its 225th birthday. The services Norwood provides might have changed over the years, but the message of being there to “uplift” the community has never changed.
The Jewish Orphanage in Norwood was demolished in 1963. A Blue Plaque at the site commemorates the building
