Mosquitos, so bring your bug spray, and storms. It seems Subaru - 10 that nearly every year it can piss down rain on you. For me, with the rally car, I need to make sure the car is waterproof. For the spectators, they need to have plenty of bug spray and be prepared for that downpour.” BEN HAULENBEEK - subaru.com/rally MUSCATELL OJIBWE FORESTS RALLY | 5 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR 2016 will be the 35th Ojibwe Forests Rally! In these nearly four decades we have seen many changes, but arguably none as major as in 2012 when we moved our event to Detroit Lakes, MN. That move started a new chapter for the Ojibwe Forests Rally and it has grown every year since. The Detroit Lakes community welcomed us and continues to support our new ideas, from the ceremonial start downtown to letting us race on some of the busiest streets. We couldn’t have asked for more and look forward to working with these great people for years to come. For the Muscatell Auto Group this will also be a big year. They are building an amazing new Subaru dealership in Moorhead, MN, yet even with the time needed to plan this new facility they have once again committed to being our event sponsor. For that I am forever thankful, knowing you have an event sponsor ready to support you every year makes it that much easier. So, what’s new this year? Our two big additions are this spectator guide and our live streaming. We’ve built this guide so you can use it throughout the rally weekend to always know what is happening and where. We also hope you’ll keep it as your memento of the 2016 rally. Live streaming has become more accessible this year with the introduction of Facebook Live and we intend to use that to allow you to see parts of the rally you’ve never been able to before. Follow us there all rally week and weekend for exclusive views of the stages no one else can see. Thank you for attending our event. We do this for you, our competitors, our volunteers and our fans. Do not move them • Be aware of your surroundings and use them as cover from the unexpected and debris • Never walk on an active rally stage • Know that not every rally car will be the same. Use common sense regarding where you are watching. • Speak up. If you are uncomfortable with something you see tell the rally volunteers. I heard on Monday that Bill Gwynne had passed away after a short illness and then on Saturday it was confirmed that Barrie " Whizzo" Williams had died. Bill Gwynne was just a lovely man and as talented on 2 wheels as on 4. He was still a member of the MSA Rallies Committee and Chairman of the British Rally School organisation. The Bill Gwynne Rally School is probably the most famous in the country and he helped, not only a lot of BTRDA drivers, but also International drivers to become more proficient at their driving. He was a great friend of the BTRDA. He was a Champion Motocross rider winning the Welsh Titles in 1958 and 59 becoming a works rider for many manufacturer teams. When he moved into cars, he quickly became the man to beat, winning both the Motoring News and BTRDA Silver Star titles in 1977 and 1978. My thoughts are with Bill's family and many friends. Barrie Williams was just a one off, a complete character and I was honoured to call him one of my friends. You always had fun in Barrie's company. I knew him for over 40 years. Although mainly known for his abilities in all types of racing cars, he started his motor sport career in rallying, winning the International Welsh Rally in 1964 in his private Mini against many works drivers.

After a year away, the successful return of British rallying’s top flight has been the talk of 2016. The final two chapters both involve the Irish Sea. The last round runs on one of world motorsport’s most famous islands, the Isle of Man, but this week we’re overflying Douglas for a second trip of the season to Northern Ireland and the Ulster Rally. This rally offers a similar challenge to that of round two, the Circuit of Ireland, with the winner needing to find that perfect blend of speed and precision in what are likely to be some of the most changeable conditions and grip levels of the season. All eyes will, of course, be on Elfyn Evans as he chases a second British title for the Evans’ household, following father Gwyndaf’s 1996 success. But it’s also well worth keeping an eye on what’s certain to be another enthralling installment of the Junior BRC battle as homegrown heroes Rob Duggan and Gus Greensmith attempt to stave off the Nordic challenge of Sindre Furuseth and Mattias Adielsson. The previous timed lap for a car was run 21 years ago by legendary motorsport racer Tony Pond who completed the course at an average speed of over 100 mph (160 km/h). The course is the perfect test for the Symmetrical AWD confidence and control of the turbocharged, 305-horsepower Subaru WRX STI. Known primarily as a motorcycle circuit, the iconic Mountain Course is known to be one of the harshest tests of man and machine. For more than 100 years, the Isle of Man has been home to the TT Races and is notable not only for its 37 3/4 mile length, but also for the average speed of the motorcycle racers who compete through the island's narrow roads and small towns at speeds averaging over 130 mph. Rally driver Mark Higgins will drive a standard Subaru WRX STI on the closed course run of the Snaefell Mountain Course.
