A little like Camden’sGilgamesh [Out In The City – issue 11], the venue is a feast for all the senses, and not just the taste buds. Below street level, the ornate interior offers an oasis of escapism from the damp and grey British winter. It’s a riot of wooden seating, intricately carved screens, silk cushions, brass lanterns and other authentic Middle Eastern flourishes. Rose petals are scattered everywhere, and the pungent aroma of incense hits you as soon as you step through the heavy, polished brass doors. The menu offers a wide range of hot and cold mezza dishes, mains and grills. It’s £25 for two mezza and a main course, or do as we did and opt for the Mixed Grill Feast, at £32 per person. You’ll start with an appetiser of fresh vegetables, olives, pickles and freshly baked pitta bread, followed by eight different dips and mezza. These included perfect hummos and baba ghannouj (aubergine purée and tahini), parsley and mint tabboule, stuffed vine leaves, marinated garlic and coriander chicken and arayes (seasoned minced lamb). This was followed by a mixed grill platter, with chargrilled cubes of chicken, lamb, kafta and quail, wrapped in a rice-filled pancake. The portions were plentiful, and we certainly couldn’t finish it all… especially as we wanted to leave room for the final courses. These consisted of a fresh fruit platter, followed by mint tea and a multi-tier, antique tray of pistachios, sticky baklavºa pastries and proper Turkish Delight. We visited on a Saturday night, and given its prime city location, imagined that the place might be quiet, but found it busy with a refreshingly mixed crowd. Besides the odd suited worker, there were young dating couples and even the odd trendy from nearby Hoxton.
