LIVERPOOL, October 26, 1846 My dear sons: Thank God with me that we are once more on TERRA FIRMA. We arrived yesterday morning at ten o'clock, after a very rough voyage and after riding all night in the Channel in a tremendous gale, so bad that no pilot could reach us to bring us in on Saturday evening. A record of a sea voyage will be only interesting to you who love me, but I must give it to you that you may know what to expect if you ever undertake it; but first, I must sum it all up by saying that of all horrors, of all physical miseries, tortures, and distresses, a sea voyage is the greatest . The Liverpool paper this morning, after announcing our arrival says: "The GREAT WESTERn, notwithstanding she encountered throughout a series of most severe gales, accomplished the passage in sixteen days and twelve hours." To begin at the moment I left New York: I was so absorbed by the pain of parting from you that I was in a state of complete apathy with regard to all about me. I did not sentimentalize about "the receding shores of my country;" I hardly looked at them, indeed. Friday I was awoke in the middle of the night by the roaring of the wind and sea and SUCH motion of the vessel. The gale lasted all Saturday and Sunday, strong from the North, and as we were in the region where the waters of the Bay of Fundy run out and meet those of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, afterwards we had a strong cross sea. May you never experience a "cross sea." . Oh how I wished it had pleased God to plant some little islands as resting−places in the great waste of waters, some

    WELLINGTON, HIS PAPERS AND THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY REVOLUTION IN COMMUNICATION Inaugural Lecture as Professor of History and Archival Studies 20 November 2008 C.M.Woolgar Southampton 2009 Chris Woolgar is a graduate of Southampton and Durham Universities, and qualified as an archivist at the University of Liverpool. After cataloguing the archives of two Oxford colleges, he returned to Southampton in 1982 to work on the Wellington Papers. He has been Head of Special Collections in the University Library since 1991. His research interests include modern political and military papers, Jewish archives, patterns of documentation and communication, as well as aspects of daily life from the medieval period onwards. Among his publications are Household accounts from medieval England (British Academy, Records of Social and Economic History, new series, 17-18; 1992-3) , The great household in late medieval England (New Haven, 1999), The senses in late medieval England (New Haven, 2006), and a volume edited with Dale Serjeantson and Tony Waldron, Food in medieval England: diet and nutrition (Oxford, 2006). He has edited four volumes of Wellington Studies and is currently organising Southampton’s Fourth Wellington Congress. Sir William Wake 8 Bt – Bedford 1774-84 Seats: Courteenhall, Northamptonshire (built later 16th c., remod. 17th c., inher. by mar. to Jones heiress 1672, rebuilt 1791-95, still own); The Abbey House, Waltham, Essex (built c. 1590, acq. by Jones family 1676 and inher. by Wakes from them 1688, main seat until late 18th c., largely abandoned after 1739, ruinous by 1770) Estates: Bateman 3141 (E) 5810. Owned 62,500 acres in Scotland in 1970. The Scottish estate was sold. Still owned 2,000 acres in Northamptonshire in 2001. Title: Baronet 1621- Notes: The 3rd Wake Bt married the Drury heiress and succeeded to estates in Suffolk 1712-44. The Drurys quite probably accompanied the Conqueror to England. The volumes either published or in preparation cover the House of Commons from 1386 to 1868 and the House of Lords from 1603 to 1832. They are widely regarded as an unparalleled source for British political, social and local history. They deal with 1386-1421, 1509-1558, 1558-1603, 1604- 29, 1660-1690, 1690-1715, 1715-1754, 1754-1790, 1790-1820 and 1820-32. All of these articles are now available on www.historyofparliamentonline.org . The History’s staff of professional historians is currently researching the House of Commons in the periods 1422-1504, 1640-1660, and 1832-1868, and the House of Lords in the periods 1603-60 and 1660-1832.
