Since 2014, Reed’s interview was expanded to take into account the presidency of Donald Trump. The title of this interview was supplied by this publication. Ishmael Reed (b. 1938) is the winner of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship (genius award), the renowned L.A. Times Robert Kirsch Lifetime Achievement Award, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the National Institute for Arts and Letters. He has been nominated for a Pulitzer and finalist for two National Book Awards and is Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley (a thirty-five year presence); he has also taught at Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth. -

Baker, PhD Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2017 Advisor: Christopher Gonzalez, PhD Superhero comic books provide a unique perspective on marginalized characters not only as objects of literary study, but also as opportunities for rhetorical analysis. There are representations of race, gender, sexuality, and identity in the costuming of superheroes that impact how the audience perceives the characters. Because of the association between iconography and identity, the superhero costume becomes linked with the superhero persona (for example the Superman “S” logo is a stand-in for the character). However, when iconography is affected by issues of tokenism, the rhetorical message associated with the symbol becomes more difficult to decode. Since comic books are sales-oriented and have a plethora of tie-in merchandise, the iconography in these symbols has commodified implications for those who choose to interact with them. When consumers costume themselves with the visual rhetoric associated with comic superheroes, the wearers engage in a rhetorical discussion where they perpetuate whatever message the audience places on that image. -

Accessory to Murder: A Lesbian Masquerade Rob K. Baum ABSTRACT Mabel Maney parodies Fifties-era "girl detective" Nancy Drew with lesbian Nancy Clue, mocking the original series' insistence upon heteronormativity while maintaining Keene's luxuriously white, upper class sanctity. This article explores Maney's comic structure from Freudian "dress-up" and professional disguise to lesbian masquerade, demonstrating their ideological difference from gay camp - one queer commentary has repeatedly confused. Maney's conflation of the disparate motives of lesbian masquerade and gay camp lead to her abandonment of lesbian feminist readers. Running head: ANESTHESIA REQUIREMENTS FOR REDHEADS 1 Anesthesia Requirements for Redheads Nathan Classon, RN, BSN, SRNA Adventist University of Health Sciences Project Mentor: Tom Andrews, MD, JLR Anesthesia Group Committee Chair: Alescia DeVasher Bethea, PhD, CRNA Nurse Anesthesia Program, Adventist University of Health Sciences March 16, 2016 ANESTHESIA REQUIREMENTS FOR REDHEADS 2 Abstract As the melanocortin-1 receptor gene was not discovered until 1995, only anecdotal observation supported that redheads had an increased anesthetic requirement. Utilizing relatively recent research, this project aimed to enhance the knowledge regarding the anesthetic requirements for redheads among student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs). Interestingly, there was a decided perspectival shift in the opinion of literature reviewed between 2004 and 2015. Earlier studies were supportive of an increased anesthetic requirement of redheads, while more recent studies discouraged such an approach. It is possible that the later studies relied on self-reported hair phenotype, rather than analysis of genetic makeup of the MC1R genotype. Given this, it is plausible that there is a significant difference in the anesthetic requirements of redheads, depending on whether they are homozygous, heterozygous, or compound heterozygous. Therefore, current literature was reviewed, synthesized, and presented simultaneously to two cohorts of SRNAs at Adventist University (ADU). The project’s efficacy was determined by comparing the scores of an identical pre- and post-test. -

Gender and Hair Politics: An African Philosophical Analysis by Sharon Adetutu Omotoso, PhD [email protected] Institute of African Studies University of Ibadan, Nigeria ABSTRACT One wonders if there is anything called philosophy of hair. It may be argued in some philosophy quarters, that to endorse any philosophy of hair is to strip philosophy of its intellectual nature, relegating it into realms of trivialities. While anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists and scholars in the sciences have attempted discussing hair issues, philosophers have paid minimal attention based largely on a claim that there are more important life issues to philosophize. While ‘head’ (ori in Yoruba language) as a concept in African Philosophy has been widely theorized, very little work has been done on hair as a part of the head. Consequently, this paper argues that the importance of hair in the development of social constructs of the body puts forth the need for a gendered study of its philosophy and politics. Politics of hair in Africa is interesting and highly debatable yet overlooked by existing literatures. Using methods of critical analysis, reflective argumentation, deconstruction and reconstruction to carefully consider social, economic, cultural and religious dimensions in the politics of hair among men and women, this work draws out the implications for Africa’s holistic development. Dr Sharon Adetutu OMOTOSO is currently with the Gender Studies Program at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria where she coordinates the Women’s Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC). Rarer still are analyses of lesbian fictions on New Zealand television. This study offers a robust and critical interrogation of Sapphic expression found in the New Zealand television landscape. More specifically, this thesis analyses fictional lesbian representation found in New Zealand’s prime-time, free-to-air television environment. It argues that television’s script of lesbian desire is more about illusion than inclusion, and that lesbian representation is a misnomer, both qualitatively and quantitively. -
