Harris Professor of Bible Exposition The Master’s Seminary Many scholars hold that premillennial statements are found only in Revelation 20:1–10. Although these verses are extremely important in supporting the premillen- nial doctrine, many other verses throughout the New Testament also offer support for premillennialism. Our study limits itself to five biblically doctrinal premillennial truths from the New Testament that seamlessly blend throughout the Bible with the person and work—and reign—of Jesus the Messiah on earth after His Second Com- ing. * * * * * Introduction Whenever discussions between premillennialists and amillennialists occur, Revelation 19 and 20 is usually the section of Scripture on which many base their argumentation, especially Revelation 20:1–10. Before we examine these specific pas- sages, we know that God has already made several prophecies elsewhere. And how one interprets these passages has been determined long before by how those other related futuristic biblical texts have already been interpreted, before ever approaching certain crucial biblical passages such as Revelation 20:1–10. So, as we shall see, one should actually end the argumentation for this important component of eschatological theology in Revelation 19–20, not start there. Rev 8: 1 When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. In chapter four of Revelation the author tells us that the song of praise before God ‘never ceases’ (4:8), but now there is silence. ‘Heaven seems to hold its breath because of what is about to happen on earth’. Perhaps the author is thinking of the passage in 2 Esdras where the world returns to its “original silence” as “at the beginning of creation” when nobody will be left alive (7:30 cf.6:39)i. It is an intensely dramatic image which has caught people’s imaginations all the way from the first century to Ingmar Bergman. It could speak about the fear we feel about the possible effects of climate change as represented by James Lovelock in The Revenge of Gaia, or Mark Lynas in Six Degrees. But the silence does not last. Seven trumpets are given to seven angels. These may be the seven archangels found in Jewish tradition and in this tradition trumpets are used to warn or to call. “All you inhabitants of the world, when a trumpet is blown, hear!” says Isaiah(Is.18:3) It is the task of prophets as watchmen to call the people to “give heed to the sound of the trumpet”, to hear the warning says Jeremiah (Jer 6:17 ).

    GEOG 442 – The Great Extinctions Evolution has spawned an incredible diversity of lineages from nearly the beginning of the planet itself to the present. Speciation often results from the isolation of a population of organisms, which then evolve along their own trajectories, depending on such factors as founder effect, genetic drift, and natural selection in environments that are different to some extent from the range of environments from which they've been isolated. Speciation can be allopatric or sympatric. Once a new species forms, it is endemic to its source region. It may then be later able to escape its source region, migrating into new regions and even becoming cosmopolitan. Even a cosmopolitan species is subject to environmental change out of its environmental envelope and to competition from other species. This can then set off a process of decline and local extirpations across its range, resulting in disjunct distribution, eventually recreating an endemic distribution in its last redoubt before its final extinction. Extinction, then, is the normal fate of species. If a species is lucky, it may go extinct by dint of having evolved into one or more daughter lineages that are so divergent from the parent that we consider the parent extinct. Many species are not lucky: Their last lineage fades out. Extinction is normal. We can talk about the background extinction rate, the normal loss of species and lineages through time. The average duration of species is somewhere between 1 and 13 million years, depending on the kind of critter we're talking about. Mammal species tend to last about 1-2 million years; unicellular dinoflagellate algae are on the other end at 13 million years.

  • The Eschatological Role of the Seventh Antediluvian Hero in 2 (Slavonic) Enoch

ORLOV THE PILLAR OF THE WORLD: THE ESCHATOLOGICAL ROLE OF THE SEVENTH ANTEDILUVIAN HERO IN 2 (SLAVONIC) ENOCH Introduction In chapter 25 of the 2 Enoch the Lord reveals to the translated antediluvian hero some unique details in the mysteries of creation found neither in earlier Enochic booklets nor in any other Second Temple Jewish materials. One of the important parts of this revelation deals with the order of events that preceded the visible creation. The Deity unveils to the seer that prior to visible creation he called out from nothing the luminous aeon Adoil ordering him to become the foundation of the upper things. The account describes the process of Adoil’s transmutation into the cornerstone of creation on which the Deity establishes his Throne. Several distinguished students of Jewish mystical traditions, including Gershom Scholem and Moshe Idel, noticed that this protological account in chapter 25 dealing with the establishment of the created order appears to parallel the order of eschatological events narrated in chapter 65 where during his short visit to earth Enoch conveys to his children the mystery of the last times. 1 According to Enoch’s instruction, after the final judgment time will collapse and all the righteous of the world will be incorporated into a single luminous aeon. The description of this final aeon appears to bear striking similarities with the primordial aeon Adoil portrayed in chapter 25 as the foundation of the created order. The text also seems to hint that the righteous Enoch, translated to heaven and transformed into a luminous celestial creature, is the first fruit of this eschatological aeon that will eventually gather all the righteous into a single entity.

This is so, in part, because the phenomenonis comparatively difficult to observe and because no laboratory analogue has been discovered. To this it must be added that hurricanes have received surprisingly little attention from the theoretically inclined fluid dynamicist, perhaps owing to an understandable tendency to avoid problems that involve complex thermo- dynamics and lack laboratory analogues. Yet hurricanes involve a rich spectrum of fluid-dynamical processes, including rotating, stratified flow dynamics, boundary layers, convection, and air-sea interaction; as such, they provide a wealth of interesting and consequential research problems. This article reviews recent developments in the theory of hurricanes and delineates the important remaining scientific challenges. THE MATURE HURRICANE: A NATURAL CARNOT ENGINE About 80 rotating circulations knowngenerically as tropical cyclones form over the tropical oceans each year. Of these, roughly 60%reach an intensity (maximumwinds in excess of 32 m s- 1) that qualifies them as hurricanes, a term applied only in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific. (Similar storms in other parts of the world go by different names.) Anexcellent review of the climatology and observed characteristics of these storms is provided by Anthes (1982). Here we use the term hurricane in place of the generic term tropical cyclone.
