The Department of Injustice Under Jeff Sessions the Department of Injustice Under Jeff Sessions January 2019
January 2019 The Department of Injustice Under Jeff Sessions The Department of Injustice Under Jeff Sessions January 2019 CONTENTS INTRODUCTION 1 VOTING RIGHTS 2 IMMIGRANTS' RIGHTS 3 CRIMINAL JUSTICE 6 DISABILITIES 9 HEALTH CARE 10 RELIGIOUS LIBERTY 10 LGBT RIGHTS 10 CRIMINALIZATION OF POVERTY 11 AFFIRMATIVE ACTION 12 WORKERS' RIGHTS 12 FREE PRESS AND PROTEST RIGHTS 12 PRIVACY RIGHTS 13 SEPARATION OF POWERS 15 POLITICIZED ANALYSIS AND PERSONNEL 15 INTRODUCTION Jeff Sessions' tenure at the Department of Justice was a national disgrace. As attorney general, he was entrusted to enforce federal laws — including civil rights laws — and secure equal justice for all. Instead, Sessions systematically undermined our civil rights and liberties, dismantled legal protections for the vulnerable and persecuted, and politicized the Justice Department's powers in ways that threaten American democracy. When President Donald Trump and his political appointees elsewhere in his administration tried to do the same, often in violation of the Constitution, Sessions' Justice Department went into overdrive manufacturing legal and factual justifications on their behalf and defending the unjust actions in court. Sessions was aided by Trump-approved appointees who often overruled career attorneys and staffers committed to a high level of neutral professionalism. Under Sessions' political leadership, these Trump appointees have inflicted significant damage in the past two years. Together they have threatened the First Amendment rights of the press and protesters, targeted the communities Trump disfavors through discriminatory policies and tactics, attacked the ability of ordinary citizens to vote and change their elected government, vindictively retaliated against perceived political opponents, and thwarted congressional oversight of the Justice Department's activities. -
2019 International Religious Freedom Report
CHINA (INCLUDES TIBET, XINJIANG, HONG KONG, AND MACAU) 2019 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary Reports on Hong Kong, Macau, Tibet, and Xinjiang are appended at the end of this report. The constitution, which cites the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party and the guidance of Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought, states that citizens have freedom of religious belief but limits protections for religious practice to “normal religious activities” and does not define “normal.” Despite Chairman Xi Jinping’s decree that all members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) must be “unyielding Marxist atheists,” the government continued to exercise control over religion and restrict the activities and personal freedom of religious adherents that it perceived as threatening state or CCP interests, according to religious groups, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and international media reports. The government recognizes five official religions – Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Protestantism, and Catholicism. Only religious groups belonging to the five state- sanctioned “patriotic religious associations” representing these religions are permitted to register with the government and officially permitted to hold worship services. There continued to be reports of deaths in custody and that the government tortured, physically abused, arrested, detained, sentenced to prison, subjected to forced indoctrination in CCP ideology, or harassed adherents of both registered and unregistered religious groups for activities related to their religious beliefs and practices. There were several reports of individuals committing suicide in detention, or, according to sources, as a result of being threatened and surveilled. In December Pastor Wang Yi was tried in secret and sentenced to nine years in prison by a court in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in connection to his peaceful advocacy for religious freedom. -

In May 2017, the private equity firm Blackstone Group announced the creation of an investment fund for U.S. infrastructure projects, which would be funded in large part by the government of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).1 The effort to raise funds stalled,2 however, and faced further setbacks after the murder of U.S. resident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018.3 Blackstone Group has extensive ties to the Trump administration. Chief Executive Stephen Schwarzman is a prominent supporter and advisor of President Trump’s,4 and publicly released records indicate contact with senior officials at the Treasury and Commerce Departments— including on the topic of Blackstone Group’s venture with PIF. Comprehensive Encirclement
COMPREHENSIVE ENCIRCLEMENT: THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY’S STRATEGY IN XINJIANG GARTH FALLON A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy School of Humanities and Social Sciences International and Political Studies July 2018 1 THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname or Family name: FALLON First name: Garth Other name/s: Nil Abbreviation for degree as given in the University calendar: MPhil School: Humanitiesand Social Sciences Faculty: UNSW Canberraat ADFA Title: Comprehensive encirclement: the Chinese Communist Party's strategy in Xinjiang Abstract 350 words maximum: (PLEASETYPE) This thesis argues that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has a strategy for securing Xinjiang - its far-flung predominantly Muslim most north-western province - through a planned program of Sinicisation. Securing Xinjiang would turna weakly defended 'back door' to China into a strategic strongpointfrom which Beijing canproject influence into Central Asia. The CCP's strategy is to comprehensively encircle Xinjiang with Han people and institutions, a Han dominated economy, and supporting infrastructure emanatingfrom inner China A successful program of Sinicisation would transform Xinjiang from a Turkic-language-speaking, largely Muslim, physically remote, economically under-developed region- one that is vulnerable to separation from the PRC - into one that will be substantially more culturally similar to, and physically connected with, the traditional Han-dominated heartland of inner China. Once achieved, complete Sinicisation would mean Xinjiang would be extremely difficult to separate from China. In Xinjiang, the CCP enacts policies in support of Sinication across all areas of statecraft. This thesis categorises these activities across three dimensions: the economic and demographic dimension, the political and cultural dimension, and the security and international cooperationdimension. -

Stockholm 29 March 2021 His Excellency Xi Jinping Elisabeth Rachlew /ch President of the People’s Republic of China The State Council General Office 2 Fuyoujie Xichengqu, Beijing Shi 100017 People’s Republic of China Your Excellency, We, the Human Rights Committee of Sweden’s Scientific and Literary Academies, write respectfully to express our most urgent concern about the situation of Ilham Tohti, a Chinese professor of economics who is serving a life sentence for charges related to his peaceful activities in support of Uyghur rights. We understand that, shortly after his arrest in 2014, he was transferred to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), far from his family in Beijing. During his detention, he has been held under difficult conditions of confinement, including deprivation of family visits for extended periods of time and harassment of his family and colleagues. Professor Ilham was a professor of economics at Minzu University in Beijing and editor of a scholarly website that addressed social issues in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). Professor Ilham is particularly well-known for bridge-building between the Uyghur and Han communities to enable peaceful solutions to tension in the region. Despite widespread acknowledgement that he has always been a voice of moderation and reconciliation, he was arrested in January 2014 and accused of subversive intent in his writings, interviews with foreign media, and classroom lectures. In a closed trial in September 2014 that failed to meet international due process standards, Professor Ilham was convicted and given a life sentence. In light of the information above, Professor Ilham’s detention appears to be arbitrary, in violation of his fundamental rights to freedom of expression and to due process. -

Politics, Human Rights February 19, 2019: An “app” for Xi Jinping’s teachings This app has the Chinese name “Xue Xi qiang guo,”学习强国 , which can be translated: “learn to strengthen the country.” The app was released by the Propaganda Department of China’s Communist Party in collaboration with Ali Baba. It quickly became a success and by mid-February was by far the most popular app on Apple China’s web store. According to The Standard [Hong Kong], this popularity can be attributed to a decision by local governments and universities to “encourage” party members to download the app. As of February 19, the app had been downloaded 43.7 million times, a number confirmed in April by MERICS (The Mercator Institute for China Studies).
