John Williamson A Hell Of A Career It is hard to describe John Williamson and his music without thinking that you have left something out or underrated his contribution and achievements. How do you sum up an artist who has captured a country in song and had such a successful career in one of the most cutthroat industries around? It’s an almost impossible task. Very few artists have experienced and earned the longevity of such a career as John Williamson. It’s quite rare but when you review his albums and songs you can see why. After 43 years in the music industry, touring continuously for that period, John’s career is stronger than ever and he is still writing and recording new songs. But during this time, he has shunned celebrity and resisted offers to take his music to the international stage, preferring to stay true to his passion: Australia. An ARIA Hall of Fame member, John Williamson has won 3 ARIA Awards, 4 APRA Awards, 8 TSA Awards, 8 MO Awards, 24 Golden Guitar Awards and sold more than 4 million albums in Australia earning numerous GOLD and PLATINUM Records. On Australia Day 1992, Williamson was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) “for service to Australian country music and in stimulating awareness of conservation issues”. John is not only an artist of unbelievable musical poetry but also a man of integrity. He has always stood firm to his own beliefs and his courage of his conviction regardless of the outcome and without regrets. He is truly proud of his country and stands and sings tall with each note. It was back in 2004 when Miss Connie and producer/DJ Angus McDonald started making beautiful music together. A series of singles at first then, in 2006, their self-titled, 3 x platinum debut album. Spearheaded by a spectacular salvo of chart topping hits – UFO, Pictures and I Love It – Sneaky Sound System won ARIA Awards for Breakthrough Artist and Best Dance Release, the first of 14 nominations to-date. Second long-player and #1 album 2 arrived in 2008 with yet more dancefloor slayers in the form of Kansas City, When We Were Young and the #1 UK club smash It’s Not My Problem. In 2009 I Will Be Here, a collaboration with Dutch superstar DJ Tiesto, took Sneaky to the top of both the US dance airplay and UK club charts. You may end up with one or two of these items, or a whole room full, on display for people who want to come and see. Some people give these items to a museum or official collection to put on display because they are so important. When this happens, a team of professionals will assess the items in terms of Significance and decide whether to add them to their collection. CONTEMPLATE AND DISCOVER Why do we like to keep things? As a class, brainstorm all the reasons why people might start a collection. Think about your family - do you have any collections in your house? In pairs, or small groups, students interview each other about collections they or their family members have (or wish they had). Ask students to consider; • What is in the collection (or what would they like to be in the collection)? • Who owns the collection? • How or why did they start the collection? • How do the things they collect make them feel? Older students may also like to consider the difference between collecting and hoarding. Students share what they discovered with the rest of the class. “Those who do not know the past are doomed to repeat it.” Ask students to consider this quote from Albert Camus. Give students 5-10 minutes to brainstorm or list all the reasons why they feel it is important to remember and study the past.
