To use another overblown metaphor, clubs are also the essential fabric out of which the rich, variegated tapestry of the game’s history has been woven.

Parliamentary Debates (HANSARD) FORTIETH PARLIAMENT FIRST SESSION 2020 LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY Thursday, 12 November 2020 Legislative Assembly Thursday, 12 November 2020 THE SPEAKER (Mr P.B. Watson) took the chair at 9.00 am, acknowledged country and read prayers. HON JAMES (JIM) McMILLAN BROWN Condolence Motion MR M. McGOWAN (Rockingham — Premier) [9.02 am] — without notice: I move — That this house records its sincere regret at the death of Hon James McMillan Brown and tenders its deep sympathy to his family. I begin by paying my respects, and Parliament’s respects, to Jim’s family in the Speaker’s gallery today. I would like to name the people here: Bill and Jenny Brown, Timothy Brown, Rachel Brown, Kerry and John Fisher, Aaron Fisher, Peter Fisher, Amy Riley, Dawn Pianto, Chelsea Pianto, Vera Hughes, Rose Brown and Gaye McCulloch. I thank them all for coming along today to hear Jim’s condolence motion. I believe other family members will be present to hear Jim’s condolence motion in the Legislative Council. Throughout Jim’s 15 years of parliamentary service, he served in both chambers of the Western Australian Parliament. He was always willing to assist members and he worked hard on behalf of his rural and regional constituents. Jim was part of a proud tradition of farming Labor members of this Parliament. Jim was born on 5 April 1927 to William and Susan in Merredin in regional Western Australia. Merredin would be a town that remained an important place for Jim throughout his life and career. His parents owned the local coffee shop, then named the Coffee Palace and later Raphael’s.

  • Larrikins&Legends
MEDIA RELEASE TheLarrikins&Legends untold story of Carlton’s greatest era By Dan Eddy ON SALE: 26 MAY 2017 They were a bunch of larrikins who became a team of legends. Between 1979 and 1982 the Blues won three premierships, and were rated one of the greatest teams of all time. Yet their remarkable feats have long been overlooked when discussion arises as to the best teams in AFL history. Not anymore. In Larrikins & Legends, characters such as Peter ‘Percy’ Jones, Wayne ‘The Dominator’ Johnston, Peter ‘The Buzz’ Bosustow, Warren ‘Wow’ Jones, and the king of them all, Alex ‘Jezza’ Jesaulenko, are brought to life like never before. They mingled with Prime Ministers, were entertained by American-style dancing girls, broke bones, survived political upheaval, and drank plenty of amber liquid. But above all, they were mates, on and off the field, and remain so to this day. They were certainly a ragtag bunch of men and they partied hard. But boy, could they play footy. In fact, over a four-year period, the team fielded by Carlton would win three premierships— winning 76 of 98 matches for a winning percentage of 78 per cent—a feat which should surely rank alongside the achievements of modern- day powerhouses, the Brisbane Lions (2001-2004), Geelong (2007-2011) and Hawthorn (2012-2015). Remarkably, despite such outstanding successes, the Boys in Blue, as coach David Parkin noted with his usual enthusiasm, are seldom mentioned when debate rages over who is the greatest football team in VFL/AFL history. Why is this side, which includes such stars as Mike Fitzpatrick, Rod Ashman, Peter Bosustow, Jim Buckley, Bruce Doull, Wayne Harmes, Ken Hunter, Wayne Johnston, Percy Jones, Mark Maclure, David McKay, Ken Sheldon, Geoff Southby and, of course, Alex Jesaulenko, not included in the debate? Through one-on-one interviews, exhaustive archival research, and his art as a storyteller, author Dan Eddy has now brought their deeds to life.

  • The Story of Jim and Phillip Krakouer. by Sean Edward Gorman BA
Moorditj Magic: The Story of Jim and Phillip Krakouer. By Sean Edward Gorman BA (Hons) Murdoch University A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy At Murdoch University March 2004 DECLARATION I declare that this dissertation is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work, which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. …………………………………. Sean Edward Gorman. ii ABSTRACT This thesis analyses and investigates the issue of racism in the football code of Australian Rules to understand how racism is manifested in Australian daily life. In doing this, it considers biological determinism, Indigenous social obligation and kinship structure, social justice and equity, government policy, the media, local history, everyday life, football culture, history and communities and the emergence of Indigenous players in the modern game. These social issues are explored through the genre of biography and the story of the Noongar footballers, Jim and Phillip Krakouer, who played for Claremont and North Melbourne in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. This thesis, in looking at Jim and Phillip Krakouers careers, engages with other Indigenous footballer’s contributions prior to the AFL introducing Racial and Religious Vilification Laws in 1995. This thesis offers a way of reading cultural texts and difference to understand some Indigenous and non-Indigenous relationships in an Australian context. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have often wondered where I would be if I had not made the change from work to study in 1992. In doing this I have followed a path that has taken me down many roads to many doors and in so doing I have been lucky to meet many wonderful and generous people.

SUBMISSION TO THE PUBLIC ACCOUNTS COMMITTEE INQUIRY ON THE USE OF STATE FUNDING BY THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL COMMISSION (WAFC) IN ITS ROLE AS CARETAKER OF FOOTBALL IN WA This submission to the Public Accounts Committee inquiry is provided by the Western Australian Amateur Football League Inc. (trading as Perth Football League) on behalf of our League and the sixty-nine ‘grassroots’ community-based Member Clubs that comprise it (“the Perth Football League”). The submission includes specific responses to the three elements of the inquiry’s Terms of Reference. In support of those responses, we provide further detail and context about the Perth Football League and our affiliate relationship with WA Football Commission (“WAFC”), as well as providing recommendations which support the ongoing sustainable and effective use of State funds to develop football across all levels in WA. To the extent that the Public Accounts Committee may seek further detail on any of the information provided in this submission and/or seek a formal deputation to be provided on behalf of the Perth Football League, we stand ready and willing to assist the inquiry to the extent that the Committee may so require. SPECIFIC RESPONSES TO TERMS OF REFERENCE A) How effectively State funds have been used to develop football across all levels Perth Football League maintains that the state of ‘our game’ is broadly positive in Western Australia. COVID-19 has presented significant challenges for all industries, including volunteer-based community clubs and peak State Sporting Associations (“SSAs”) alike. However, key data and KPIs have been tracking in the right direction for many years when it comes to the WAFC developing football across all levels in WA.
