Secretary’s Report 2019 2019 has been a difficult year for the Club financially. With sponsorship, canteen and bar sales down, social functions not as well supported, combined with ever 2019 saw player numbers drop from 266 in 2018 to 206 in 2019. increasing costs, some changes will need to be made in 2020.

This is largely a reflection of the Committee’s decision not to nominate a team in the Metro League this year. Whilst it is inevitable that some costs need to rise, the real area we need help from members with is sponsorship.

The Club competed in League and Reserves in the C1 Division of the re-named Perth Football League, the Ian Do you know of any companies which can assist? Dargie Colts, E2 Thirds and in Woman’s B Grade. As we move into 2020, we will see a number of changes to Club Coaches. Once again, both the League and Reserves teams made finals but could not bring home that elusive Premiership. After 3 years as the Woman’s Coach, Mogan is looking towards different role.

Josh Hall and Kade Pescod represented the State Amateur team which went down by 31 points to Victoria in July After 2 years as Thirds Coach, Sam too is looking at a different role.

Josh, Kade and Caleb Goodhew represented the West Coast Eagles State Amateurs in the annual game vs the New James Gliddon has decided to move to coaching at Junior level. Holland State Country Team which the Amateurs won by 9 points. Congratulations to Josh on being named best on ground for the game. The Club is really grateful for the time and effort put in by our Coaches, along with that put in by all our volunteers and we wish them well into the future. In the Colts, Damon Enosa (VC) and Jack Phillis were selected to represent the State Amateurs in the game vs Country Colts. It was a game dominated by the State Amateurs, who won by some 92 points. I would also like to acknowledge the work put into the ground and facilities by the City of Gosnells and its Staff.

Post season, Lisa Gilewski represented WA in the National Masters Championship conducted in Townsville. Former Rod Edom and Glenn Pedderson are happy to take a call at just about any time, and when we look at the state of Gosnells player (now playing for West Perth in the WAWFL) Jade Wilson was also selected. our facilities when compared to many others, we are really well looked after in comparison.

2019 saw the League introduce a Player Points System. After a great deal of work by Kevin Wansbrough (with assistance from Clubs WA), our new Constitution was approved at a Special General Meeting of Members on 30 June and accepted by the Department of Commerce. All in all, 2019 was a good year, but with challenges ahead.

On a sadder note, former Thirds Coach, Club Vice President and Committee member, Stuart Bates passed away from cancer. Brian Pettitt After an approach by the Thirds players, the Committee approved the introduction of a new Fairest and Best trophy for the Thirds to be named the ‘Stuart Bates Memorial Trophy’.

We were delighted that Stuart’s wife Donna accepted the Club’s invitation to attend our Presentation Evening at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle and presented the trophy to this year’s player selected Fairest and Best in Thirds, Michael Cohen.

Around the Club, construction of the new office, Board Room and Merchandise Store has been completed (the new cool room and solar power system having been completed last year) and the State Government grant towards the projects has been acquitted.

Many thanks to Chris Tallentire MLA, Member for Thornlie for his active backing of the projects. 10 Photographs by 11 Treasurer’s Report 2019 Gnangarra I have much pleasure in submitting the Financial Report for the 2019 season. I’d first like to thank the club committee including President Michael “Slick” McCaughan for the opportunity to After a couple of up and down weeks, we found we were playing good football in patches throughout games come back and coach the club I once played for. Your work and dedication to the football club is unrewarding at but not stringing 4 quarters together. Heading into our 1989 and 2009 Premiership Reunion day against former times but doesn’t go unnoticed by those in and around the club. Thank you to all the club sponsors, without you Sunday League arch rival Thornlie we had a strong focus on allowing the boys to “Play Footy” and look to start the the club doesn’t run and I thank you for investing in our great club. To all the life members and past players, you game well. In what was a contested game that had its momentum swings, unfortunately for us when the final siren are the back bone of this great club and it’s been a privilege to meet and get to know a lot of you throughout the went we were on the losing end of the score line. year. After a tricky block of games we found ourselves at the half way point with a 5 win and 4 loss record. Our last game Well what a ride the 2019 football season has been, firstly the introduction of the new Perth Football League (PFL) being a 15 goal win against Kenwick at home. As we entered the second half of the year we knew we were going which replaced the West Australian Amateur Football League (WAAFL) as well as the introduction of the new to be in for a challenge in order to keep our finals push alive. player points system which had a few early issues but worked itself out in the end. During this period we lost our club captain and leader, Luke Chapman, to retirement due to ongoing concussion Pre-season started on December 10th 2018. The players welcomed me and we built the respect for each other and issues. Luke has been an incredible and inspirational player, leader, teammate and friend for our football club. We my year couldn’t have started any better. As a coaching group we challenged the players with the word resilience, all wish Luke, Siobhan and their bump all the best for their future and understand Luke needs to put his health and we were going to test them with this and see how they coped with it. The players excelled from night one wellbeing ahead of football. averaging 58 players a session, while incorporating a new game plan, having a few new coaching voices as well as new drills to comprehend. Starting the second half with a 3-1 record, thanks to wins over Warnbro, Ocean Ridge and Bullcreek/Leeming, with a loss coming at the hands of Carlisle we were placed 5th and looking to consolidate a spot in the top 5. Our pre-season games were played against Lynwood/Ferndale at home with the boys having a simple message which was to play footy. I wanted to see them play and see what they had learnt over the preseason. It was a really After getting a good result away to Hammersley we began the hardest block of games for our season. 4th placed good hit out with the only major downfall being a leg injury to Jayden Pescod who we unfortunately would lose Melville (Home), 2nd placed Thornlie (Away) and top of the ladder Bassendean (Home). We got passed Melville for the season. Feeling confident after our Lynwood/Ferndale hit out we went into the 2nd scratch match v Baldivis by 2 points, in what was a really good game of football but again fell by a kick to Thornlie for the second time this away, looking to build on the things we had learnt. Again we put together some really good passages and showed year before being overrun by Bassendean in the last 3 quarters. Our last game of the regular season was against against good opposition the system and structures held up in the heat of battle. Unfortunately we were again Kenwick who we managed to beat by 15 goals for the second time. struck down by injuries, this time loosing Lindsay Williams to a torn ACL for the season and Treymayne Hodder to a cracked knee cap for an extended period of time. Finishing the regular season in 5th place we were to front up against Melville in an elimination final. Unfortunately this is where our season come to an end. Tough day all round for the league side, a heavy loss wasn’t the way we Round one saw the club head down to Warnbro to take on the newly promoted Swans, a tough first up away wanted our season to end. assignment for the club, following on from the colts and reserves games who both played well to record first up wins. As you would expect a really good feeling pre-game heading into round 1 and the boys were prepared and To play a total of 6 debutants, who had the privilege of pulling the Gosnells jumper on for the league side for the ready. That feeling soon changed when we lost Drew Robinson 10mins into the game with a tight calf and then first time is something I am very happy about for season 2019. 3 of those players were of colts’ age. Add to that found ourselves 5 goals to 1 down at half time, our half time score reading 1.7. We made a few positional changes Jack Phillis and Thomas Stevens who were colts age but had previously played league football and all goes well for at half time and managed to kick 7 goals to 1 for the third and then finish the game in the last with a 4 goal to the club moving forward none quarter. Running out with a 32 point victory. To Steve Thomson, I thank you a lot. You were the message decipher between myself and the players and I am sure In round 2 we played our first home game for season 2019. Taking on Ocean Ridge in what was a big day for the that you delivered a lot of messages a lot nicer than how they were originally designed. As the runner you put up football club, celebrating Brent (Bluey) Phillis and league captain Luke (Chappy) Chapman’s 100th league games as with and copped a bit throughout the year but for you to understand it was never personal and just move on was well as the celebration of club life member Adam (Whitey) White, who played game 250 in the blue and gold. We a great help and credit to you. also had Chris (Muddy) Watterston playing his 150 club game when he ran out with the reserves. The day ending with a few injuries and only 1 win for the club. Thanks for your efforts and assistance throughout the season. first of 2 byes couldn’t have come at a better time. Keeping the players on the ground and getting them back from injury was a great help.

Our ANZAC round game was played against Carlisle at home. In a tight first half we allowed Carlisle to dictate to us To Shaye, Paul, Plugga, Sam and James I would like to thank all of you for your work and commitment to the 2019 how the game was being played. Our second half was where we gained control, looked to move the ball forward season. You put in a huge amount of time and effort that goes unnoticed by a lot of people but for me I just want and held our width where required to get our runners up and going. Every player showed the spirit and dedication to say thanks and hopefully you have ticked off the coaching boxes you set out to do at the start of the season. I required on such a big occasion. A really solid second half allowed us to come away with a 38 point victory. Special think you all have the ability to continue and grow into the coach you really want to be, my one bit of advice is to mention to Drew Robinson who was awarded the Barrett/Hansen medal after being judged best afield showing make sure you be yourself and coach your way and not try to be someone else. the ANZAC spirit. I’d also like to mention Jaxon Millsteed who rocked up thinking he was playing 3rds but was throw into the league side on 5mins notice, getting his reward late with a very clever crumbing goal. 16 17

A very special thanks must go to the wonderful Kylie Clement, Caitlyn Cameron as well as the helpers you had for all your efforts not only on game day but during the week as well. I know I can be difficult at times and the way you adjusted and put up with that means a lot and helped us to get the success we did find this season. It’s not an easy position, that of team manager, but you made it run extremely well, even with all the late changes we made every week.

To my family, wife Sam, sons Taj and Koby as well as my dog Jake, I thank you as well. You put up with a great deal throughout the season. From the grumpy moods after a loss to the constant talk about things we can do better on game day and during the week to reach our full potential as a team and as a club.

Finally to the players. One simple word really, Thanks.

You made the year one of the best years I have had from a coaching view point. We got to know each other as people and the respect and care I have for each and every one of you I will hold with me. We were able to have a laugh and joke around but when the time came to get to work and put in the effort, as players you did that. It really is a credit to you for the dedication you showed to me, the football club, yourselves but mostly to each other that allowed us to get to where we got to this season. Although we didn’t reach our end goal, the growth in the group has been really strong and together I feel like you are with in touching distance of what you want to achieve both on and off the field. At the start of the season for me it was about bringing Gosnells players back to the club to add to the already dedicated group, I’m happy that we achieved that and it felt like those players never left.

The 2019 reserves season was an enjoyable and reasonably successful one. We had a great mix of talented players with really good character and although we probably fell short of where we expected to finish you come to realise that sometimes these things happen and that doesn’t take away that I was rapt with the effort that the players put in. This team was like all those that I’ve been fortunate to coach they were great to be a part of. We got a lot right this year that I hope gets built on and improved upon in 2020 and I have a real confidence that it will because we had good leadership in our group that will help us in going forward. Brayden and Nathan were fantastic in their commitment to this team.

It’s really important in our club that we have a real strong sense of togetherness in what we are doing and it’s about creating a thought that team success is the most important thing and I reckon we got that and as a coach you love that. Along with that though its just as important to acknowledge those who had outstanding performances that were rewarded with these players winning incredibly well deserved trophies. Congratulations to Ash, Brayden, Dmayne, Ethan, Fish and Bub. Also on that note well done to Nathan on his 3rd place finish in the Perth Football League voting.

To Aaron and the league side they should be optimistic for the future on the back of their performances this year. Along with Shaye and Paul they set about improving how we go about our footy and there were definitely steps taken in the right direction. It takes time to get where ideally we would like to get to so we hopefully all stick at it. RESERVES Back row: Michael McCaughan Matthew Hopewell Dean Stauborg Caleb Goodhew Taylor Millsteed Travis Samson Kyle Warner Paul White Chris Watterston Ryan Davies Rick Napier Middle row: Garry Rayment Nathaniel Reid Rodney Hansen James Bubryzcki Wade Goodhew Aaron Gould Ashley Pescod Blake Pickett The Colts under Jimbo probably didn’t get as many wins as he would have hoped but we have to look beyond Front Row: Kyle Dougan Dennis Luffman Nathan Hansen (Vice Captain) Steve Davis (Coach) Brayden Watkins (Captain) Cameron Hayden Lachlan MacDonald that in that it was pretty exciting from a club point of view in that several players were fantastic when they came up to play in the reserves and a couple went beyond that and played league for us as well as helping the thirds on several occasions. As a club that’s important that we can develop young players to go on to make a significant contribution in the years to come.

The Thirds led by Sammy were similar to the colts in not getting as many wins as would have been hoped but they were brilliant in the way they stuck together and kept competing under tough circumstances. As much as the club needs players to look forward to getting improvement out of, it’s just as crucial that we develop coaches and I hope that Sam is ready and enthusiastic to progress with his coaching.

Well done to Mogan and the women’s team who came close to making the finals and in that they took huge steps forward and I hope that continues into 2020.

Off the field, I don’t think we can appreciate enough the huge amount of work being done by Slick and the committee. They are great people doing great work and its an incredible commitment to the club that they make. I can’t thank them enough. I would also like to thank them for giving me the opportunity to coach. Great work by Karen and Kylie on the social side and working hard to get people more involved in the club. Great work also by Benny in the kitchen. Our trainers, Ryan and Joe are as good as we have had and they are valuable to our club.

Finally a couple of people that deserve a huge thank you, not just for their work this year but over the last couple of years and that’s Jeff Chapman who provides great support to me and the team and also Wanna who has been a great assistance as well. Then to Sticks and Steely, they are totally behind the ressies and it would have been great if they could have shared in winning a flag.

I look forward to seeing everyone in 2020. 20 21 Colts Coach Report 2019

2019 was again a challenging year for the Gosnells football club’s colts team.

We started the season with 15 players on the list from the previous year’s colts team, with another 30 players coming in from other clubs. We had players coming from Kelmscott JFC, Roleystone FC, Armadale JFC/SFC, Gosnells JFC and the largest portion of new players coming from Huntingdale JFC. The Challenge was to get these players to come together for the upcoming season.

We had great numbers throughout the preseason where we continued to see our numbers increase with new players coming in. our colt’s boys put in the hard yards on the track during preseason working alongside our senior players. Our preseason games saw us give a lot of players the chance to show what they could offer going into the upcoming season.

Our season started in a great way with a strong away win at Warnbro which showed the team had a lot to offer going forward. Going into the next round the team was upbeat however we went down to Ocean Ridge who went on to finish 3rd. the following week saw us narrowly lose to Carlisle by 4 points. Next 5 games saw us play the top half of the table, where we struggled against the bigger bodied teams who had been playing together for a number of years.

We managed to finish the season with 2 wins with our second win coming against Warnbro at home where COLTS Back Row: Michael McCaughan (President), Darcey Watherston, Byron Hanson, Connor Cousins, Jaxon Goddard, Dalton Preedy, Jake Perman, Lachlan MacDonald, Zackary McDonald, Blake we won by 49 points to record a good result, 3 games we lost by less than 20 points all of which we should put Pickett, Joshua Valentine, Tim Davies (Boundary Umpire) ourselves in great positions to win the games but fell short at the end of the game. Our best 2 games outside our Middle row: Daniel Spicer (Trainer), Mark Stevens (Goal Umpire), Brandon Gunnyon, Tom Stevens (Vice Captain), Jonathon Savage, Jonathon Williams, Isaiah Mourish, Shane Fensom, wins came in rounds 17 and 18. While we lost round 17 against Bassendean by 36 points, we led for large parts of Nick Drew, Jo Stevens (Water), Lisa Spicer (Trainer) the game, and in the end our kicking accuracy in front of goals cost us. Round 18 saw us play Kenwick in a game Front row: Delray Jones, Lleyton Bagovits, Peter Savage, Michael Dixon, James Gliddon, Michael Vidich (vice Captain), Riley Skewes, Tawan Suwannasri, Liam Adams, Absent from photo: Tate Moffatt, Winston Raimundo, Taj Hickey, Dylan Hoskin, Blake Rodney, Ben Lamb, Justin Indich, Leslie Pickett, Jack Phillis (Captain), Beaudine Winmar (Vice Captain), we would lose by 17 points, however we led the game for most of the day just missing out on taking advantage to Luke Rawlinso. our large inside 50 entries.

Over- all with the number of new players we had on our list this season, there is a lot to look forward to coming from the Gosnells colts team. We had a total of 5 colts age players play league football this season, we had 8 players play reserves football and several other players played thirds football for the club during the season.

To all the parents and partners of the colt’s players thank you for your support during the season I am very much sure all of the players appreciate all that you do.

To the other coaches at the club thank you for your support throughout the year, I have very much enjoyed my time working alongside you all. Special thanks to Aaron for your support and guidance this season.

To all of the colt’s players that played for me this year, thank you very much for your support and I hope you learned something from the season we had together. I know I learnt a lot. I know if this group of players sticks Proudly supporting together success will follow you.

To all my helpers throughout the year thanks. Jaxon Goddard your work behind the scenes was truly appreciated and I wish you well with your desire to coach. To the committee for your support and giving me the chance to the Gosnells Hawks coach the colts team this season.

Lastly to my wife and children who support my wishes to coach each year and put up with my constant distraction during football season. I could not do this without your support. Coming off a successful 2018 season where the team won 14 games including playing finals, our expectations were high. However an early kink in the grading system meant we unexpectedly went up a grade to E2, a grade that the club had never won a game in. The players were extremely competitive in early games in the season, adapting well to the difference in grades. It became obvious that wins were going to be hard to come by as we struggled with continuity both in team and our brand. Although it wasn’t the season we wanted on the park with wins, the culture and continued effort by the 22 boys every week cannot be faulted. My approach was always simple. I would only ever judge the boys on how they competed when things got hard, and how brave we were with the footy. Hand on heart I can safely say that the word “compete” was the one we lived by, and that’s a credit to every player who put a jumper on. Earlier in the season we as a community lost Stuart Bates to cancer. Stuart was the inaugural coach for the thirds as well as a player, committee member, Vice President and above all, a mate. Our thoughts will always be with Stu’s family and they’re always welcome back with open arms given everything that Stuart did for us. After conversations with the Committee, it THIRDS Back Row: Mark Stevens (Goal Umpire), Thomas Stevens, Anthony Price, Richard Marsden (Vice Captain), Liam Stevens, Jaxon Goddard, Daniel Grigg, Jade Ginn, David White, Jack Phillis, was agreed to change the for the Thirds to the Stuart Bates Trophy, an initiative and introduction that allows Marley Nelson Jnr (Water Carrier). Stuart’s legacy to live on within the thirds. RIP mate. Middle Row: Michael McCaughan (President), Richard Kickett, Aubrey Bolton, Trey Smiler, Sole Isa, Corey Ridley, Kyle Preedy, Ethan Barry, Joanne Stevens (Water Carrier), Tim Davies (Umpire), Brendan Matthews (Umpire) Congratulations to the award winners. Michael Cohen, Marley Nelson, Michael Vidich, Sam Carlino, Kyle Wood and Fraser Front Row: Daniel Spicer (Trainer), Fraser Kickett, Lam Le, Kyle Wood (Vice Captain), Sam Parker (Coach), Russell Fuller (Captain), Samual Carlino, Michael Cohen, Marley Nelson, Lisa Spicer (Trainer), Kickett. Well-deserved boys Alan Parker (Team Manager) Thank you to the leaders throughout the season, in particular Russell Fuller who took over the Captaincy early on, as well as Richard Marsden and Kyle Wood. Again not the year we wanted on field. It became clear early in the season that results were going to be hard to come by and our focus switched from results to developing. Developing players and team. This included using 72 players for the season compared to 48 last season, including 25 players with just 1 game. To the players who put a jumper on in the grade, do not underestimate how much I appreciated it. A special thanks to Michael Vidich, Jack Phillis and Tom Stevens, 3 colts players who I could rely on most weeks to play twice in a day. Thanks: To Lisa and Dan Spicer as trainers and their two boys Tim and Shaun, both helping out as boundary umpires when required. To our two umpires in the grade, Brendan Matthews and Kevin McCabe. As much as we hate you when a whistle gets blown not to us, we don’t have a game without you guys there every week. Mark and Jo Stevens as goal umpire and water carrier. Two of the most highly reliable people you’ll ever meet, whose job can’t be underrated. Marley Nelson junior, who volunteered as a boundary umpire, and to clean change rooms after the game, a genuinely good kid. To Liam Stevens and Bryan Lutter Jnr for helping out coaching while I was playing after they both did their ACL. Special thanks to Brian Pettitt and Bob Uittenbroek for everything during the season. For registering the mountain of players I put in front of you, to taking their money Bob, and all the effort and minutes put in. Again please don’t underestimate how much I’ve appreciated all the questions you’ve taken from me. To the other coaches, Paul Clements, James Gliddon, Shaye Hayden, Steven “Plugger” Davis and Aaron Ballantyne. Thanks for making me eat pizza every Tuesday for twenty weeks, my skin folds went through the roof. Aaron particularly, thanks for all the new things I’ve learnt this year. The fresh perspective and ideas I’ve absorbed off you have been quality, and as a coach I owe you a lot. I look forward to learning and developing more with you as a mentor, and have no doubt the club is in good 11 hands with you in charge. And finally, to my parents Jan and Alan. I said it last year but again, the greatest influences on my football career. I wouldn’t be able to get through Saturdays without your support. Best of luck to the club as a whole for 2020, the players, coaches, support staff, watchers, water carriers, officials, volunteers, umpires, everyone! Sam Parker 24 25 Women’s Coach Report 2019

Season 2019 was an emotional one for the women as we were seeking improvement from season 2018 and missed making finals again by percentage only.

Round 1 definitely didn’t go our way! We went down to Warnbro by 124 points and sustained 2 season ending injuries to players. In the back of my mind I was thinking, oh shit, what a start! Credit to the playing group, they just got on with it and came back stronger than ever in Round 2, securing our first win for the season.

Round 3 we came up against eventual flag winners Nollamara, going down by 52 points! Again, credit to the team and the group as a whole, their heads didn’t drop and after this, we strung together 4 wins on the trot, including handing down a 91 point belting of our own to West Coast on their home ground.

We were sitting in a good position at the half way point of the season and were looking hopeful to play finals. Sadly, this was not to happen.

In the second half of the season, we showed improvements against both Warnbro and Nollamara, however, went in over confident in games against Cockburn, Forrestdale and Bayswater. We only needed to win against one of the 3 but unfortunately, we went down on all occasions, ending our season prematurely. WOMENS Front row: Kerry Whittle (Team Manager), Concetta Molinaro, Stephanie Khosa, Mogan Jenyns (Coach), Aliesha Lyfield, Lisa Gilewski Throughout the season, there were some stand out moments both on and off the field. Mission The Medal & Trophy was struck in memory of Rodney who played 18 games for the Gosnells Colts Team in 2001- 2002. We unite our members in enriching the lives of all within the community through participation and fellowship in Australian Rules Football. Rodney received a knock to the head while playing colts for Gosnells against Kenwick on Sunday 5/05/2002 he became ill after the game and was taken firstly to the Armadale Hospital then onto the Royal Perth Hospital and Vision placed on life support. We build and maintain a strong successful club positively influencing the lives of young men and women through His family made the agonising decision to take him off life support, and on Tuesday 7/05/2002 Rodney passed the way we play at Gosnells. away. His family then made the decision to donate Rodney’s organs to six needy recipients.

The Pollock family, in consultation with both the Gosnells & Kenwick Football Clubs agreed to strike a Trophy & Values Medal to commemorate the memory of Rodney. The mission provides us with a reason for being and justifies our existence. Someone has said that membership in every organisation is made up of FOUR BONES

It is always in our sub-conscious mind to act according to our mission, our vision and or our values. The ultimate • There are the “wish“ bones who spend all their time wishing someone else would do all the work. test of a mission statement is its ability to mobilise us in a common purpose. • There are the “Jaw” bones who do all the talking, but very little else. • There are the “knuckle” bones who knock back everything that anybody else tries to do. A strong sense of mission brings emotional commitment and when people have a strong sense of mission they • Finally there are the “back” bones who get under the load and do all the work. truly believe in their work. Our behaviour is then guided by the mission, rather than by individual agendas. Which Are You? The people with whom we interact includes our team-mates, our support staff, our members, our sponsors, our family. Our level of care is how we care about and for each other by way of how we speak, how we react, how we deliver on promises. It means that we will give others what we expect to receive. The Hawks Song

When all of our stakeholders consider our level of care as awesome, we will know that we are delivering on our “We are the Mighty Hawks of Gosnells mission statement. We are the Mighty Fighting Hawks This is what binds a club together, this is what enables a champion team to be an opposition of individual We play it rough and we play it tough champions.
