Date Built: ca. 1884 Architectural Classification: Material Notes: Original slTIokestack relTIoved by Howard's Feed Store after they purchased the building Description: Other Buildings/Features: Significant Persons: Statement of Significance: In 1885 the Eldred Mill was constructed by owners George T. Smith and Zenas C. Eldred at the advantageous site near the shore ofthe Grand River. The building was situated on a spur from the Michigan Central Railroad crossing the north side ofthe property and immediately east ofthe Oeo. T. Smith Middlings Purifier Co. Works. The mill was designed by Mr. N. W. Holt, an employee of the Slnith Middlings Purifier Co., which specialized in assisting custolners in erecting or remodeling mills. The Inilll facilitiywas cOlnpleted in 1888 with the construction of a separate building to house the engineering portion ofthe facility inl1nediately west ofthe original structure. Today, this small structure, although no longer boasting its smokestack, is the only extant portion ofthe facility. The highly regarded Eldred Mill produced high quality flour into the 1920s (under the name of Heywood Milling in its final years). By 1929 the slnall building was divided between the Heywood Milling Co., and Jack's Auto Laundry. Essentially an elaborate car wash, the laundry offered auto washing, greasing, lubricating, steanling, and permanizing. Eventually the entire building was given over to the auto servicing industry before being purchased in the mid-1940s to serve as a warehouse for nearby Howard's Feed Store. References: T. Description: Other Buildings/Features: Significant Persons: Statement of Significance: Records pertaining to the building ownership prior to 1917 were not available, but based on several Inaps and the architectural style ofthe building it appears to have been constructed between 1863 and 1881. The first kown occupants include the grocery store ofPierce & Cooper at street level, with Mrs. Belle Van Court providing furnished rOOlns in the upper level ofthe building. Mrs. Van Court continued to rent furnished rootns through the 1920s, but the ownership ofthe street level grocery store changed frequently in the 1910s and 1920s. The building housed" Stuarfs Fish Grill in 1932 and the BioSS01TI Cafe in 1933, but is noted in directories as vacant in 1934 and 1935. The vacancy is probably incorrectly repol1ed based on information fron1 Mr. Vince Genco, son ofthe original shoe repairshop owners. Mr. Genco believes his father opened his shoe repair store in 1934 at the site. The third generation ofthe fatnily continues to operate the repair shop, along with a full shoe store, in the building today. References: Polk 1915 Jackson City Directory. R. L. The firm was renamed Bloolnfield Oil COlnpany in 1887, and absorbed by Standard Oil in 1889. He also served as vice-president and later president ofthe -Union Bank. The welfare ofthe city was also important to Bloomfield, who served on the city's hospital board beginning with its organization in 1889 and constructed the building that would be the last hotne ofthe public library before it's own building was erected in 1907. After Bloomfield Oil closed in 1889, the building served as hotTIe to a variety ofbusinesses, including several grocery stores, the M&M Corset COlnpany, later M&K Corset, and Cowley's Cut Rate Shoes. Michigan Avenue building is unknown, but based on similarity of archtectural features with several other buildings in Jackson with known construction dates, it appears the building was erected ca. 1870. The first indication ofthe building's occupant does not occur until 1886, with the building labeled "hand printing" on the published city lnap. By 1890 city directories indicate the building was the location of Bernard Grunauer's shop, which both 11lanufactured and sold lllillinery goods. At the saine tilne, the third floor ofthe building served as the local YMCA Hall. By 1904, Moses Land WiliialTI Jacobson purchased what was then known as the Faulkner-Porter store, and convelted the space into the first Jackson location ofthe Jacobson's store. Jacobson's occupied the building until 1918 when they constucted the Ester Jacobson Building at 113 W. Michigan. Over the following years, the building was occupied by restaurants, a hosiery store, drug store, a branch ofthe Michigan Bank-Midwest, and an appliance shop. Most recently the building served as the Adl11inistration Offices ofthe Jackson Public Schools, but is currently vacant. References: P. M. I(oschick 1984 Partners in Progress. Pearl was constructed ca. 1920. In 1921, the local city directory indicates the building had the dual purposes of "Auto Inn" and "Jackson Auto Laundry." The following year, the ownership ofthe building is attributed to Michigan Buick Sates COlnpany. An area Inap produced in 1930 indicates the building as "Garage Capcy: 80 cars." At the tilne, this building is one offour such buildings on the block defined by W. Pearl, Clinton (Louis Glick), N. Jackson, and N. Mechanic. Today the W. Pearl location is the only extant former garage. Under the ownership of Rayner Field, president, and L. C. Watkins, secretary-treasurer, the building hOLlsed a dealership for Buick products. It is unclear if the Auto Inn was also owned by Field and Watkins, but as "Buick Storage" it SeelTIS a natural conclusion to nlake. The finn held the location for over a decade, but by the end ofthe 1930s, the autolTIotive distributor was Field Pontiac. Over tinle, the building was the sales location for Buick, Pontiac, Cadillac, and Nash autolTIobiles. Since 1978 the building has been the h0l11e ofCollins Bros Flooring. By 1924 the building was shared by the Quickedge Sharpener Co., who made grinding ll1achines, I(elloggCorset Co., and Northern Coca Cola Bottling Co. The arrival ofthe Kellogg Corset COlnpany 111arked the start of a tenacy that would continue for over 60 years..Initially the corset 111anufacturer shared the building with the other finns, but by 1932, they were the sole occupants. Founded by Douglas C. Kellogg and John Mark in 1909, the COlnpany was originally known as M and K Corset Co., and the 16th corset COlnpany located in the City of Jackson. By 1916 the original oWllership partnership had been dissolved, and the firm renamed to I(ellogg Corset. In spite ofthe fierce cOlnpitetion faced by the corset cOlnpany,· they were able to establish a nationwide custolnerbase, eventually ITIoving into orthopaedic appliances and braces. The presence ofa saloon at the site is verified with 1885 city directory listor for a saloon under the ownership ofJacob Noll. While building ownership lTIay have changed over the next two decade, each successive lTIap of Jackson continued to not the building as a saloon. By the second decade ofthe twentieth century, the building operated as a billiard hall under a variety ofowners. In 1917, E. D. Francis ran the billiard hall on the first floor and Mrs. Harriet Taylor provided furn ished rOOITIS upstairs. This pattern continued in to the 1930s~ Since the 1930s the building appears to have been occupied only sporadically, and is currently vacant. References: Polk 1885 Jackson City Directory. R. L. Date Built: ca. 1850 Architectural Classification: Italianate Material Notes: Description: Other Buildings/Features: Significant Persons: Statement of Significance: Although little infonnation is available on the building, it appears to have been constructed ca. 1850. This deternlination is based on the brick construction, seglnental arched windows on the non-public faces ofthe structure, and silnple hood ornaments on the front facade. The date is also substantiated by the presence ofa sinlple rectangular building with the sanle characteristics as the present day structure on a map ofJackson prepared in 1853. The first indication ofthe buildings's use caine in

1886, when the structure is labeled "Sal tt or saloon on the Sanborn Map. Subsequent Inaps prepared in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century label the building as either vacant store or store. Clayton R. Hunt" is noted as the occupant ofthe building in 1917, although there is no indication of the building's use. The following year, in 1918, the two story building is the location ofthe l(offel11an & Peyhas restaurant. The building rel11ained a restaurant into the Inid-1920s, but changed ownership at least once. Since 1925 the building has changed hands just three tiInes. Both Adolph P.
