The mountain itself is named after its resemblance to a gold mining cradle. It has four named summits: In order of height: Cradle Mountain 1,545 mtrs (5,069 ft) Smithies Peak 1,527 mtrs (5,010 ft) Weindorfers Tower 1,459 mtrs (4,787 ft) Little Horn 1,355 mtrs (4,446 ft) When it was proposed to tackle Cradle Mountain on the 1st day of our week’s walking, Verna was heard to ponder the wisdom of such an attempt on the first day. As on a previous trip, when our group undertook to climb Mt Strzelecki on day one on Flinders Island, it took the remaining week to recover! Fortunately not many of our current party heard her. So off we set at 8.30am to climb to Kitchen Hut via the Horse Track around Crater Lake from our base at Waldheim Cabins (950 metres). It was not long into the walk when I, for one, was thankful to have gloves. -

ANNUAL REPORT 2016 HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2015-16 • awarded $3.9 million to 135 projects in two general grant rounds • commenced a community infrastructure targeted round • delivered community forums at Bothwell, George Town, Launceston, Mornington and New Norfolk, receiving vital feedback on issues concerning communities and the Fund • initiated an emerging community leaders program. The synchronised breeding habit of many seabird species makes them particularly vulnerable to fires in the nesting area. Post-fire recolonisation and soil formation were studied on Albatross Island, and observations from island rookeries of shearwaters, fairy prions and fairy penguins in eastern Bass Strait and elsewhere were used with a view to understanding the long-term impact of fires on seabird colonies in Tasmania. UR.lcr85"~ 56 1985/58. West Coast gravity tie stations R.G. Richardson M.J. Dix This report presents absolute gravity values for a series of tie stations on the west coast of Tasmania. Intervals were measured using Worden gravity meter W913 and Sodin gravity meter S183 with a minimum of six measurements of each interval. The measured interval between Hobart Airport and Strahan Airport was in error by 2.1 ~m/sec2 and between Strahan and Smithton Airports was in error by 0.2 ~/sec2. All observed gravity values have an error of less than 1 ~/sec2. The observed gravity values are given in Table I and the station locations are shown on Figure 1. Table 1.
