It’s understandable that the lowest level was gated to ensure “You’re eating ice cream?” the ignorant are heard to say. “But it’s that only faculty can park there, and I’m fine with that. The top level, where the meters are, was split in freezing outside!” Soft serve, sherbet, or traditional ice cream - leave half. Half of the top lot had meters enforced, the other half open for cars with permits to use. Then on with it in a cone and you’re an object for ridicule. Within this packet of information was a section discussing what an SEB member receives from being in this student organization. The list included a salary of $6.00 an hour! While that’s not an exorbitant amount of money, I find it very interesting that members of a voluntary organization are receiving monetary compensation when UMBC is shortening office hours and planning on centralizing the mail system next semester due to severe budget cuts. First of all, I think the proposed mail plan is ridiculous. Working at a front desk, I’ve seen the sizes of packages that some people get; quite a few of them are not of a size conducive to a trek across campus, especially to places in the apartments. Mail often takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half at the desk where I work, and that is only to sort out the mail for 500 or so rooms. I can only imagine how slow the already snail-paced mail system would become, should five people have to sort mail for more than 3,000 students. Besides, where is the mail for the proposed mailboxes coming from? It’s a waste of the mailboxes already in the dorms, and that, in my idea, is not the optimal way to save money. Another way UMBC is cutting the budget is by shortening the library hours. Hello! We came to college to become well-read, educated individuals who are ready to face the world. The ultimate resource for the achievement of this goal is the campus library, which boasts more floors than the administration building. Why do the policy- makers think it appropriate to shorten the hours in which we can research and study, cutting out the hours when most students are most productive? In my opinion, the budget cuts are being taken out of the wrong places. The edu- cation of the student body, which should be foremost in the minds of the administra- tion, is suffering. Meanwhile, the SEB is paying their members $6.00 an hour to pro- gram events which no one attends. Think how many SEB phone messages are deleted before being heard. Some departments barely have enough teachers to handle all the classes being offered. In fact, the Modern Languages and Linguistics department has had to aban- don certain courses because of lack of funding, the Intercultural Living Exchange is barely keeping its head above water, and yet organizations with minimal impact on our academic experience at UMBC are being allotted huge budgets. The administration must seriously reconsider its area of focus if they hope to continue recruiting incom- ing students, and being touted as a “hot school.”

The men’s basketball team may have come up short on Thursday night but it was the women of Retriever athletics that brought the house down. The women took the court during half- time at Thursday night’s men’s basketball game and performed a carefully choreo- graphed and diligently-practiced dance that brought fans to their feet. A huge turn-out came to show their support for the girls, who gave even the UMBC Dance Team a run for their money. Many students claimed this to be the best halftime show they’d seen at UMBC. “People actually got into it,” junior Chris Becraft of the baseball team said. “If they did something like that every once in awhile... people would start to come on a regular basis.” The dance was choreographed mostly by softball’s Sarah Crowell, a junior who also participates frequently at basketball games by singing the National Anthem. Crowell worked to recruit her fellow dancers, and the girls labored for weeks prac- ticing (many putting in extra hours after long days of athletic practices). Track team members Chasity Burns, Kim Robinson and Patrice Malloy, field hockey’s Bernadette Cullen, and lacrosse’s Jen Dragoni were among the participants.
