When enlarging the format of the originally published trade paperback/comic (which Im sure initially goes through various levels of visual inspection and editing), Im only assuming that the original comic was enlarged to fit the dimensions of the Absolute Edition Format. What I mean by this is that in a trade format, youll experience the images as crisp and well defined. This trade format was adapted to the Absolute format. Because the comic appears to have been enlarged, the images are slightly fuzzy and lacking definition.Pulling back the comic away from your face, as if seeing it in a smaller format, the images look better. The speech bubbles, which are formatted to the larger size format appear just as they would in the trade. I feel that the original illustrations, if they are physical, should have been recaptured to match the resolution of the speech bubbles.Maybe this is just a consequence of Alex Rosss painting which, when enlarged, looses some of its definition, especially in the minute details that scale better in a larger format? Conversely, I did not notice any lack of clarity in The Worlds Greatest Super-Heroes, worked on by himself and Paul Dini, when compared side by side with the speech bubbles. That comic though was intentional produced and finished for a large format release.That said, this format and presentation is obviously vastly superior to my original trade that I own, so Ill take what I can get, and maybe Im just seeing things. Still, kind of like watching a DVD on a bluray player, the image quality is sharpened but lacking in comparison to the text.Otherwise, this is a prestige work that deserves to be on every comic readers bookshelf.
