An Abstract of the Dissertation Of AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Samantha Chisholm Hatfield for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Sciences presented on March 4, 2009. Title: Traditional Ecological Knowledge of Siletz Tribal Members Abstract approved: Janine E. Trempy This research effort examined Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of Siletz tribal members of the environment they live and/or lived in, and how both Western societal beliefs and land reduction to the initially established reservation location affected and altered how the area TEK has been maintained and passed down. The theory being tested was that "The knowledge gathered by Tribal members was significantly altered by the influence of Western societal beliefs and land reductions." Confederated Tribes of Siletz tribal members older than eighteen years of age were interviewed, and these interviews were analyzed. Identification of tribal members‟ information, experience, and corroboration with Western scientific validation was examined and illustrated the validity of juxtaposing TEK application and information with existing Western scientific methods. Tribal members‟ utilization of TEK showed a routinely employed system of identification as well as selective collection and natural management of resources for future replenishment based on natural ecological patterns and behaviors rather than Western scientific principles. Introduction There is a saying that Native people walk in two worlds: their Native indigenous communities, sometimes referred to as “Indian Country,” and the mainstream American society where they routinely interact with non-indigenous populations. Growing up as an Indian student, much of the information I learned at school was set aside as just that: information learned for school. Arriving home after school meant observation, interaction with the land, and comforting traditions which, looking back, had been established long before I arrived in this world, and which have been maintained by current generations. I also realize some of the traditions that have been longstanding and remain part of our identity as a People have been forcibly removed, or oppressed, to the point of having to be abandoned for the time being. History of the Siletz Historical Perspective The purpose of this section is to discuss the historic difficulties suffered by ancestors of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (hereinafter Siletz Indians or Indians). It is also to promote understanding of the ongoing effects and circumstances under which the Siletz people struggle today. Since time immemorial, a diverse number of Indian tribes and bands peacefully inhabited what is now the western part of the State of Oregon. The Siletz Tribe includes approximately 30 of these tribes and bands.1 Our aboriginal land base consisted of 20 million acres located from the Columbia to the Klamath River and from the Cascade Range to the Pacific Ocean. The arrival of white settlers in the Oregon Government Hill – Siletz Indian Fair ca. 1917 Territory resulted in violations of the basic principles of constitutional law and federal policy. The 1787 Northwest Ordinance set the policy for treatment of Indian tribes on the frontier. It provided as follows: The utmost good faith shall always be observed toward the Indians; their land and property shall never be taken from them without their consent; and in the property, rights, and liberty, they never shall be invaded, or disturbed, unless in just, and lawful wars authorized by Congress; but laws founded in justice and humanity shall from time to time be made for preventing wrongs being done to them, and for preserving peace, and friendship with them. 5 Data was collected from the Oregon 012.5 255075100 Geospatial Data Clearinghouse.

Deflection of the Siletz River flow by the progracling Drift Creek delta has caused 105 m of erosion since 1912 on the east side of Siletz Spit. The ocean side of the spit suffers periodic erosional episodes separ- ated by periods of accretion and dune building.The most recent and publicized erosion occurred during the winter of 1972-73 when it was feared that the spit might be breached; one partially constructed house was lost and three others were saved only by timely riprapping. A sand mining operation may have aggravated the recent erosion by disrupting the sand budget, the balance of sand additions and losses from the beach. All of the foredune on the spit has been stabilized by dune grass and much of it has been riprapped.The long term effects of stabilization and riprapping are uncertain. Oles The late Eocene Spencer Formation crops out in the low hills on the western edge of the central Willamette Valley, Oregon.Surface exposures in eastern Benton and southeastern Polk Counties and oil/gas well records and cuttings in Polk, Marion and Linn Counties were studied to determine Spencer stratigraphy, regional lithologic variations, and depositional environment. Methods used include: study of outcrops, petrography, texture, and well cuttings, as well as the correlation of well logs and microfossil data of McKeel (1984, 1985). The distribution of the underlying early-late Eocene Yamhill Formation is also briefly considered. The Yamhill Formation consists of the Miller sandstone member enclosed between mudstones. The lower and middle Yamhill record shoaling from bathyal to marginal marine depths, and they are overlain by bathyal upper Yamhill mudstones. The Miller sandstone is lens-shaped, trends parallel to the Corvallis fault, and reaches a maximum thickness of approximately 2,000 feet on the east side of the fault. The Miller sandstone grades westward into bathyal mudstones, and eastward into volcanic tuffs and flows. Thinning of the Miller sandstone and upper Yamhill mudstone along the Corvallis fault suggests movement during early late Eocene. The absence of Yamhill strata along the outcrop belt to the southwest may be related to this tectonic activity.

Wells Portland State University 2019 © 2019 Darby Patrick Scanlon ABSTRACT The Portland and Tualatin basins are part of the Puget-Willamette Lowland in the Cascadia forearc of Oregon and Washington. The Coast Range to the west has undergone Paleogene transtension and Neogene transpression, which is reflected in basin stratigraphy. To better understand the tectonic evolution of the region, I modeled three key stratigraphic horizons and their associated depocenters (areas of maximum sediment accumulation) through space and time using well log, seismic, outcrop, aeromagnetic, and gravity data. Three isochore maps were created to constrain the location of Portland and Tualatin basin depocenters during 1) Pleistocene to mid-Miocene (0-15 Ma), 2) eruption of the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG, 15.5-16.5 Ma), and 3) Mid- Miocene to late Eocene time (~17-35 Ma). Results show that the two basins each have distinct mid-Miocene to Pleistocene depocenters. The depth to CRBG in the Portland basin reaches a maximum of ~1,640 ft, 160 ft deeper than the Tualatin basin. Although the Portland basin is separated from the Tualatin basin by the Portland Hills, inversion of gravity data suggests that the two were connected as one continuous basin prior to CRBG deposition. Local thickening of CRBG flows over a gravity low coincident with the Portland Hills suggests that Neogene transpression in the forearc reactivated the Sylvan- Oatfield and Portland Hills faults as high angle reverse faults.

Dole State Geologist FOREWORD TO THE FIRST EDITION The rec onnaissance geologic maps of the adjoining Dallas and Valsetz 15-minute quadrangles, together with the descriptive text in this bu lletin, are the results of work undertaken by the State geological su r­ vey . This important survey work was discontinued during the war and resumed in 1 946 . The two quad­ rangles are located in northwestern Oregon, mainly in Polk County, and cover a section of the summit and eastern slope o(the Coast Range and a portion of the western part of the Willamette Valley. The selection of the Dallas-Valsetz area for geological survey work stemmed primarily from the De­ partment's efforts to find limestone deposits of better quality than those now known in the area . Such de­ posits are badly needed both for industry and agricultural stone . The survey was not successfu l in finding commercial deposits of high-grade stone bu t information was obtained which indicates the favorable geo­ logical horizon where limestone deposits could probably be found and where further prospecting should be done. This stu dy of the area allows a clea rer understanding of stratigraphy, struc ture, and geologic history of the Coast Range .

I/ Menlo Park, CA 94025 21 Vancouver, WA 98661 3/ now at Emcon Associates, Medford, OR 97504 4/ now at Arco Oil and Gas, Bakersfield, CA 93309 INTRODUCTION The Tillamook map area consists of six 15' quadrangles extending from the Oregon coast eastward across the mountainous Eocene volcanic terrane of the northern Coast Range (Figure 1). The region is informally known as the Tillamook Highlands and is characterized by high rainfall, dense vegetation, and deeply weathered surface outcrops. The terrain is rugged, ranging from sea level to 3700' (1100m), but logging roads and rivers provide good access and bedrock exposure. Major forest fires in the 1930s and 1940s created spectacular exposures of the Tillamook Volcanics in the Highlands, but succesful reforestation has left only the most rugged peaks still exposed. Previous geologic mapping in the Highlands examined the Tertiary marine stratigraphy of the Coast Range as part of a reconnaissance oil and gas investigation (Warren and others, 1945; Warren and Norbisrath, 1946).
