Einführung In der gegenwärtigen Pietismusforschung wird der Pietismus als die bedeutendste religiöse Erneurungs- bzw. Frömmigkeitsbewegung des Protestantismus seit der Reformation bezeichnet.1 In dieser Geschichte des Pietismus ist Arnold neben Spener, Francke und Zinzendorf eine „Symbolgestalt einer Frömmigkeitshaltung“2. Gottfried Arnold (1666-1714) sah durch die Erforschung der Anfänge des Christentums das Leben der ersten christlichen Gemeinde als Spiegel für die verdorbene gegenwärtige Kirche an. Vor allem konzipierte er vom radikalen Spiritualismus her die Geschichte der Kirche als Verfallsgeschichte, der die Geschichte der wahren Christen als Frömmigkeitsgeschichte kontrastierte. Daraus resultierten vielfältige wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen, die die Gebildeten in ganz Deutschland bis weit ins 18. Jahrhundert hinein nachhaltig beeinflussten. Wirkungsgeschichtlich ist Arnold also der „bedeutendste Vertreter des radikalen Pietismus“3. Er ist auch einer der wichtigsten Wegbereiter der modernen Geschichtsschreibung, insofern er „den pietistischen Subjektivismus für ein vertieftes Verständnis der Geschichte fruchtbar machte“4. By the early seventeenth-century, a widespread dissatisfaction can be discerned among many awakened Protestants at the suppression of the monastic life and a new interest in reintroducing ascetic practices like celibacy, poverty, and solitary withdrawal to Protestant devotion. The introduction and chapter one explain how the absence of monasticism as an institutionally sanctioned means to express intensified holiness posed a problem to many Protestants. Large numbers of dissenters fled the mainstream Protestant religions—along with what they viewed as an increasingly materialistic, urbanized world—to seek new ways to experience God through lives of seclusion and ascetic self-deprival. In the following chapters, I show how this ascetic impulse drove the formation of new religious communities, transatlantic migration, and gave birth to new attitudes and practices toward sexuality and gender among Protestants. The study consists of four case studies, each examining a different non-conformist community that experimented with ascetic ritual and monasticism.

Halle Pietism was a reform movement within the Lutheran church in 17th and 18th century Germany that believed the establishment church had become too concerned with correct theology, thus they aimed at a revival of intense Biblicism, personal spirituality, and social reform. The Pietists, led by August Hermann Francke (1662-1727) , and King Friedrich Wilhelm I (rl7l3-l740) were partners in an attempt to create a Godly realm in economically strapped and politically divided Brandenburg-Prussia. In large measure the partnership produced Pietist control of Brandenburg- Prussia'a pulpits and schoolrooms, despite the opposition of another informal alliance, this between the landed nobility and the establishment Lutheran church, who hoped to maintain their own authority in the religious and political spheres.

Martin .Schmidt has show_n the importance of Pietism to the spiritual development of John Wesley. F. Ernest Stoeffler and W. R. Ward have both located the origins of the 18th century Methodist re-vivals in the Pietist movements which swept continental Protestantism in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Steven ()'Malley has focused scholarly attention on the Pietist roots of the Evangelical United Brethren traditions within United Methodism. Generally these connections are made to Pietism's churchly (and more respectable) forms which ema­ nated from Halle and Herrnhut during the 17th and 18th centuries. With regard to one source of German-American Methodism (the Evangelic.al Association), the connection is better made to more radical forms-those with sectarian and chiliastic leanings. Martin Schrag, in his essay,"The Impact of Pietism Upon the Mennon­ ites in Early American Christianity," draws a common distinction between "church-related Pietism" and ''radical Pietism." Church-related Pietists, such as the Spener-Halle movement, worked within the framework of orthodox Protestant theology and established churches. 1 Schrag has argued that both Philip William Otterbein and Martin Boehm fall most neatly into this cate­ gory of Pietists. ''When Otterbein and Boehm began their work, they had no intention of starting a new denomination. They sought to transform individ­ uals and thus revitalize the church, not actualize a new church.''2 Radical Pietism, on the other hands has been defined by Chauncy Dayid Ensign as ''That branch of the pietisitic movement in Germany, which empha­ sized separatistic, sectarian and mystical elements, particularly those origi­ nating in Boehmenism."3 Most scholars who have studied radical Pietism \ 'Martin H.

    Phillip Jacob Spener's Contribution to Protestant Ecclesiology Author: Dennis McCallum Introduction In 1666 a young pastor was called to become the head Lutheran pastor in Frankfurt am Main. He was well educated, holding the Doctor of Theology from the University of Strassbourg, and he had some strong notions that would soon galvanize Europe into another surge of reforming zeal-- eventually reaching millions in every corner of the globe. The pastor's name was Philip Jacob Spener. Nine years into his first pastorate, Spener would set forth his call for reform in the Lutheran church in a forward to a collection of sermons by Johannes Arndt. The title of the introduction was Pia Desideria, (Pious Desires) and within weeks this remarkable little tractate set off an astounding reaction throughout most of Europe.1 Modern members of primitive New Testament-style churches will quickly recognize several important themes in this tract, which have stirred strong sentiments today, as they have throughout church history. These ideas include the need for small meetings in the local church that will allow the re-introduction of the inter-active style of koinonia described in I Cor. 14, the need for the laity to learn the Bible and use it, the necessity of congregational review of the public teacher's positions, a vigorous critique of the institutional church and others. It is the purpose of this paper to identify the key themes of Spener's theology, focusing in the area of ecclesiology. Then, a further attempt will be made to understand the connection between Spener's ecclesiological position and those streams that gave rise to it, as well as those that flowed out from it.

    Philosophica 89 (2014) pp.137-178 JOHANN CHRISTIAN EDELMANN’S RADICALISM: A SYNTHESIS OF ENLIGHTENMENT AND SPIRITUALITY Else Walravens ABSTRACT In this paper Johann Christian Edelmann’s radicalism is studied from two points of view. First, the reasons why he unanimously is labeled as a radical thinker are considered and evaluated: his vehement style and language, his affinity with radical pietism, his turn to rationalism, his Spinozism, his massive internal and external criticism of the Bible and of the Christian faith. Second, the threefold progressive message Edelmann wanted to transmit to us through his dynamic and unstructured works is revealed and discussed: his plea for peace and justice based on a secularization of Jezus’ gospel of love, his promotion of a non-dogmatic freethinking which combines freedom of thought and of speech with pluralism and open-mindedness, his defence of a pan(en)theistic, philosophical religiosity by which he extends the scope of religiosity beyond the limits of any established creed. The extreme rational nature of his external criticism of religion and his humanistic messages prove that Edelmann joined after a long journey the Enlightenment movement. Simultaneously, he remained a homo religiosus. His 138 E. WALRAVENS mature thought is thus a succesful synthesis of Enlightenment and – secular - spirituality. 1.     Pennsylvania's Crazy Quilt of German Religious Groups* Donald F. Durnbaugh Juniata College Summary: Because of the unusual religious tolerance and economic opportunity offered to residents in William Penn's colony after its founding in 1681/82, it became the preferred focus of immigration from the Ger- man states. With the first substantial arrival of Germans in 1683, its population swelled during the 18th century. By reasonable estimate, Pennsylvania's German element amounted to a third of the population by 1790, with the number of immigrants approaching 100,000. Foundation Movements: Two important formative strands are: Anabaptism - it derives from the Radical Reformation of the 16th cen- tury. It was marked by separation of church and state (religious liberty), strict adherence to scriptures, restitutionist orientation (looking to early church as normative), high ethical standards, and nonresistance (paci- fism). Pietism - it derives from renewal movements among German Lutheran and Reformed churches in the late seventeenth century. It sought per- sonal conversion as opposed to creedal adherence, moral living in daily life, bible study, and gathering in small groups (conventicles) for wor- ship and mutual admonition. Like Anabaptism in many ways, it tended to be more individualistic, introspective, and emotional. This emerges very clearly from a collection of essays edited by Kathryn Murphy and Anita Traininger, Emergence of Impartiality, the fruit of an interdisciplinary research project1. The starting point was a search for this term in the emblem books, lexica and dictionaries of the early modern age. The discursive contexts in which this notion first appears are military and political (“parts” – parties), followed, at a slightly later stage, by juridical, ethical and moral settings. Impartiality is a term that can have a positive connotation of openness, lack of prejudice, fairness, or detachment.

    TOMAS MANSIKKA Did the Pietists Become Esotericists When They Read the Works of Jacob Boehme? s is commonly known, Jacob Boehme (1575–1624) is, and has been ever since his emergence, difficult to place in the history of thought. AThe historian Preserved Smith, for instance, characterized him as ‘the most religious of philosophers’ (Smith 1962: 171). As such Boehme could be seen to be on a borderline somewhere between philosophy and theol- ogy. From a reverse point of view, however, he could also be termed the most speculative of the religiously minded, as a deeply religious thinker or mystic. His influence is also shown in both fields; not only was he to play an important role within German philosophy during the Romantic era, but also, within the Pietist movement, or the movement for re vival of piety within the Lutheran church. Focusing on the Pietist move- ment, initiated by Philipp Jakob Spener (1635–1705) in the late seven- teenth century and its spread on Finnish ground, I will show that where Boehmian influence is traceable, it reached quite different environments depending on the movement’s leaders or followers. My intention is also to shed some light on the controversy between Lutheran orthodoxy and Pietism in early eighteenth century Finland. One way to understand the apparent heterogeneity of Boehmian in- fluence is to see Boehme himself as an exponent of not one single tradi- tion, but—as Andrew Weeks has described him—as the great Baroque synthesizer, fusing many different lines of thought: [A] surprising number of the themes of German mysticism are reas- sembled and synthesized in his oeuvre: Hildegard’s epic struggle be- tween the forces of good and evil.
