AP Photo: Summer Assignment 2018 Name: ______Due: 1st class this fall

Your summer work will consist of 2 parts: journaling and . Plan to spend 20-30 hours doing the work. Try to do a little each week. This will be your first grade for the fall. Here are the parts in more detail. Good luck and have fun!

I). Journal work: 120 points. ***Examples are provided on the next few pages.

a). 3 Pages from Scratch: 45 points Create compositions from scratch that have a clear focal point. You may use any of the following materials and techniques: colored pencils, pencils, pens, drawing inks, watercolors, pastels, charcoal, collage, image transfers, cutting into, adding onto. You may want to start with a photo of your own or use found materials.

b). Describe 5 Concentration ideas: 30 points Concentration: a body of work centered on a compelling theme. You will create at least 12 concentration pieces next year. Your concentration should be something you are passionate about and can carry through over an entire year.

I’m looking for depth here. As you start looking at artists, you may find techniques and themes that really engage you. I’d like you to write a paragraph on each of your concentration ideas. If you find a photo(s) that deal with your theme or use a technique you may use in your concentration, include them as well.

c). Three Artists of Influence Spreads: 45 points Create a 2 page spread on each artist. On the first page, print out small pictures of 4-6 works. Paste these into your notebook. Number them. On the next page, please answer the following: a. Why you picked this artist; what about their work intrigues you? b. Write several lines of commentary on each of these works. Address what you like, dislike, composition, lighting mood, message, technique etc.

II). 4 rolls of film (35mm or 120mm) or 150+ digital photos. Have fun, experiment with different lenses and lens filters. 150 points Here are some ideas: -shoot in the style of a photographer you like -explore a theme or subject in depth, even possible concentration ideas -shoot photos that would be potential breadth pieces, works that have strong consideration for the principles of design (balance, repetition and rhythm, unity/variety, contrast, emphasis, scale)

If your photos are digital bring them on a flash drive or already uploaded to your computer. If you have B/W film, bring it in to process. If you used color film, please get it processed before you return to school (ask the lab to give you a CD with high resolution images) Bring in photos or a CD with your photos on it.

EXAMPLES OF JOURNAL WORK: Pages from scratch:

pastel and magazine collage acrylic, collage, pen, thread and ribbon

*Use an entire page for each composition, and incorporate photographs along with other art media. Consider utilizing collage, paint, pen, sharpie, pencil, pastels, fabric, thread, and text. Think of each piece as an individual work of art. Look at other creative art journal pages for inspiration.

Example of a concentration idea, fleshed out: The Reflected Image and Black Identity:

My idea is to do a concentration with young black females looking into various mirrors. My desire to do this concentration comes from the struggle I have seen black women have with fitting in to mainstream culture and its ideas about beauty. I’ve seen many try to fit the norm by changing their appearance. I might examine various feelings that black women have when looking into the mirror, from positive (coy, powerful) to (self doubt, seeking approval etc). The mirror can create such a psychological feeling to a picture: it can reflect accurately, distort, exaggerate, minimize etc. I am trying to get into the psychology of black women. Other factors such as lighting, camera angle, multiple mirrors will be examined to see how they can further the emotional aspects of the reflected images.
