ANNUAL CONFERENCE GUIDE 2008 08-13 JUNE LIVERPOOL CONVENTION CENTRE INSIDE 01 WELCOME STATEMENT BY BILLY HAYES 04 PROMOTIONAL GOODS 09 POSTER COMPETITION 12 CONFERENCE TIMETABLE 14 EVENTS TIMETABLE 18 EXHIBITOR LISTINGS 22 CWUHA APPEAL Welcome to Conference his is the first time that we have held our CWU Annual Conference in Liverpool. We have held T sectional conferences here, but 2008 is the first year that our Annual Conference has graced this great city and our event will also be a small contribution to the European Capital of Culture. As ever, we trust that Conference will enlighten our new delegates and re-affirm for the longer standing delegates everything that the CWU is about. Conference is our annual parliament, where we shall debate the direction of the union for the coming year and beyond. The Conference Guide is designed to help you navigate your way through the Convention Centre and it lists details of all exhibitors, fringe meetings and the conference timetables. Once again, thank you to all and, in particular, to all the activists, headquarters staff, delegates, exhibitors, sponsors, external partners and the staff of the ACC Centre, whom I 01 am sure, will make the 2008 Annual Conference a most memorable one. BILLY HAYES GENERAL SECRETARY d Liverpool does not suffer from historical amnesia. although its pantheons of the slave trade and the industrial age have been made fit for tourists, the cobbles restored and swept litter free, the past remains defiantly the present. as a keeper of the secrets of the blood, sweat and tears of ordinary people, liverpool has few equals. that is why it excites such prejudice, even hatred, and why the unfashionable resistance of its people endures JOHN PILGER d THE GUARDIAN, FEBRUARY 12TH 1996 The officers and members of the Merseyside and South West Lancashire branch extend a warm welcome to the city of Liverpool and hope that all delegates and visitors have an enjoyable and productive time in the Capital of Culture North West Region The CWU North West Region welcomes all delegates and visitors to our region. Challenged by Popularis, T our Independent Scrutineer who organises the competition, to design two posters, one on each topic, students at Leicester College came up trumps to give CWU members a great new resource for their campaigns. The students, aged between 18 and 20 years old, are all on the BTec course at Leicester College. Many will go on to study graphic design at Colleges and Universities, and this competition gives them a real insight into designing propaganda posters. The designs are judged on clarity of message, use of colour, imaginative title and how they brought their design together. Rory Murphy, Councillor for Leicester City, arranged for the judging to take place at Leicester Town Hall, and the judges had a hard task deciding on the winners. Fevzi Hussain and Mark Greenhill from the CWU were joined by representatives from ATL, Connect, Unite who all co-sponsor the competition as well as from the TUC, Professional Footballers Association and Sir Peter Soulsby MP for Leicester. Each student was asked to present their designs giving judges the full blast of views of young people and how they had expressed the messages through their posters. 09 The winner, Tarran Uppal, provided a graphic design of the misery created by racism using his own photography and starring his fellow students. The two runners up, and, were both for their posters on equal pay which give a clear message on how unfair it is to pay women less. All the posters and the notes from the students explaining their designs are on display in the exhibition area throughout conference, and copies of all the designs are free for delegates to take away. north midlands branch sends its fraternal greetings to all delegates “lets keep close to our members lets stay true to our purpose and lets keep it real” we invite you to the cavern club on Wednesday 11th of June tickets are £10 with all profits going to charity get yours now as this event will sell out! tickets available from north midlands and midlands no. 7 branches Century One is proud to be working with the CWU providing publishing and communications services century one Publishing solutions in partnership Century One Publishing Ltd.
