Crew of MV Green Lake Saves Seven in Fire Aboard Sincerity Ace

The officers and crew of the MV Green Lake saved seven members of the crew of the Sincerity Ace, a car carrier which had caught fire in extreme weather conditions some 1,800 nm from Oahu. The Green Lake was the first vessel to respond to a Coast Guard alert that went out in the pre-dawn hours of Dec. 31: the master of the Sincerity Ace, a 2009-built car carrier sailing from Yokohama to Oahu, had reported a serious vessel fire, ongoing firefighting efforts and the intent to abandon ship. The crew had been able to launch one life raft and four of the 21 mariners on board were said to have abandoned ship with lifejackets, but the Coast Guard could not confirm whether they had reached the life raft upon entering the water or not. The officers and crew of the MV Green Lake–later joined by more “good Samaritans” aboard three other merchant ships, and the crews of a Coast Guard Hercules HC130 aircraft and a Navy 7th Fleet P-8 Poseidon–spent the next 18 hours battling high winds and rough seas in a search for the missing mariners. The licensed deck officers aboard MV Green Lake, which is operated by SEACOR, are members of MM&P. The engineers are represented by the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA) and the unlicensed crewmembers belong to the Seafarers’ International Union (SIU). “The entire crew did a truly incredible job under extreme conditions,” said Captain William Boyce. “Winds were blowing a steady 25 knots, gusting to 30 knots, with a heavy (Left to right) Chief Mate Kevin Camarda, Chief Engineer Joe Tierney, Captain Bill Boyce and Second Mate Chelsea 20-25 ft NW’ly swell. MM&P Members Support Striking Los Angeles Teachers

Members of Masters, Mates & Pilots joined striking Los Angeles teachers on picket lines in January. The strike ended in a series of big wins for the teachers and a new contract that won overwhelming teacher support. “When we stand together, we really are ‘The Mighty Mighty Union’ and we can help make people’s lives better,” said Jeremey DePaolo, a member of the MM&P Offshore Group who marched with teachers and students in the pouring rain. As part of the settlement, the Los Angeles School District will ensure that every school has a full-time nurse and that every middle school and high school has a full-time librarian. The teachers won a 6 percent pay raise, with 3 percent retroactive to the 2017-18 school year, as well as salary reopeners in future years. They also won a pledge from administrators to cap the number of charter schools in the city, as well as the right to be consulted when Wendy Karnes, Jax Karnes and Tom Delameter demonstrated with charter schools are “co-located” inside public schools. striking Los Angeles teachers outside a school. Critics of charter schools—which are funded with taxpayer dollars—say they drain money from public schools and funnel it to the for-profit corporate entities that run the charters. United Teachers of Los Angeles President Alex Caputo-Pearl called the teachers’ strike and its outcome “one of the most magnificent demonstrations of collective action that the United States has seen in decades.” “I see this as a paradigm shift,” said American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, who also marched with teachers. “The elite types who use charters as a force for competition will see this as a big blow,” she said. “We’re now seeing a mainstream shift toward neighborhood public schools with the goal being: let’s make them work for all kids.” The Los Angeles strike was the eighth major teacher walkout in the country in the past 12 months.

Jeremey DePaolo braved the cold and the rain to join the picket line. “I was blown away by the positive energy of the teachers,” he said, “and by their gratitude for support from MM&P and the Marine Firemen’s Union.”
