Job Category: Producer A is the main organizer of a program. He/she researches ideas and develops them into project proposals or adapts existing ideas or scripts. Once a production is under way, the producer takes care of all financial matters and prepares the production schedule. As the supervisor of the director, the associate producers, the production assistants, and the technical crew, the producer has the ultimate responsibility for the project.

Collaboration: The producer brings everyone together in a collaborative way. He/she might call a meeting of the , associate producers, and director to discuss the theme of a project, then bring together the technical crew (lighting director, scenic designer, , camera , etc.) to discuss achieving a certain look or feel on the set. The producer allows for the open exchange of ideas, which is critical in the creative process and makes the project stronger.

Education Needed: No one course of study will get you ready to be a producer. A background in communications, mass media, arts, music, or drama is helpful, but good producers come from all walks of life. What they have in common is a sense of showmanship—that magical quality which is inherent in all good producers.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: A producer must be able to tell good ideas from bad ones and must also possess the ability to present a program to the public in the most original, exciting, creative, and effective way possible. A producer at KET must possess storytelling skills, creative vision, organizational skills, effective and efficient budgetary skills, “people skills,” and effective communication skills.

Job Category: Director The director is the person responsible for the final look and feel of the program. A successful program must effectively deal with the feelings and emotions of the viewers. Therefore, the director’s first responsibility is to the viewing audience. The director takes all the elements of a production—script, set, talent, and the crew—and uses them creatively to tell the story. To do that, a director must be able to “think in pictures”—to take a script made up of dialogue and directions and visualize what it will look like as a TV program. The director then takes that visualization and, working with the production crew and the talent, brings it to life on the TV screen.

A director must be able to judge when a particular picture, sound, or camera movement is good or bad and be able to say why. In overseeing the production crew, the director’s job is to help each person do his or her best job so that the final product is the best it can possibly be.

A director must be quick and decisive—especially in live television! He/she literally “calls the shots.” You often do not have time to try two or three different shots or angles. In a highly technical medium like television, the director must be creative and artistic, yet be mindful of the limitations of the equipment and the production crew.

To help you imagine yourself as a director, here is a list of the things a director does during a live program. Remember, you have to do these all at once!

● Talk to, and listen to, the camera people, audio operators, floor director, and video engineers. You may often instruct the talent as well. ● Follow the script; making sure each camera has its assigned shot. ● In the studio, watch at least four monitors at all times to make sure the next shot is lined up and that videotaped inserts are ready to roll. ● Keep track of the time, giving floor cues and countdowns to the floor director or talent. ● Listen to the audio. If an announcer makes a reference to a man with a funny blue hat, the director must quickly instruct a to get a shot of that particular Wildcat fan. ● On some productions, you’ll have to do your own switching (pushing the buttons that put a particular camera or videotape on the air).

Education Needed: A good television director has a varied education that includes a background in the creative arts—music, drama, painting, and dance. Most often, directors have prior experience at a number of other production jobs such as camera operator, assistant director, and technical director.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: A director must work well under pressure and be able to quickly make artistic or crew management decisions. Like the producer, the director must be able to tell good ideas from bad ones and possess the ability to present a program to the public in the most original, exciting, creative, and effective way possible. Job Category: Associate Producer Associate producers help the producer and director during production in many ways. They time segments or programs, follow scripts, log (write down) camera shots, work with cue cards or the teleprompter, keep continuity notes, proofread electronic graphics, and help schedule guests and talent.

As a project is being planned, associate producers research the program’s topic, searching out old photos, film, and video recordings that might be needed and obtain copyrights where needed. They maintain records and files, including budget information and talent contracts, and they help make arrangements for travel and location work.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: Excellent organizational skills (ability to handle numerous details and budgets); good communication skills (both in person and on the phone); adaptability (If the director needs a fog machine but you can’t find one, can you improvise with buckets of dry ice?); strong clerical and computer skills (for keeping notes, logging footage, etc.); the ability to act as the producer’s representative in dealing with staff, talent, and the public.

Education Needed: Most associate producers started in the television business as interns or production assistants. Associate producers often become producers after they gain enough experience and have some credits to their name.

Job Category: Videographer (Camera Operator) The videographer runs an ENG (electronic news gathering) or DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera in the studio or at remote locations, working closely with the producer and director. In the studio, several camera operators may be receiving instructions from the director through their headsets. The director can switch between the cameras to choose the view he or she wants at any moment. The videographer may also work individually on a remote shoot (a production that is away from the studio). In that case, the videographer needs some knowledge of lighting and floor directing in order to perform those jobs, too.

A good videographer knows how to tell the story with the camera—and knows the differences between various brands and models of cameras. Once the basics of shooting (such as panning, zooming, and framing a shot) have been mastered, then the cameraperson can be artistic and take chances.

Education Needed: Videographers at KET tend to have a bachelor’s degree in videography, video production, photography, or a related field. Because technology is always challenging, videographers need to continue their professional education.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: Many videographers enter the field as a production assistant in order to get on-the-job experience. An experienced videographer will produce a “reel,” or professional portfolio of their best work.

Job Category: Technical Director The technical director operates and adjusts electronic equipment. Before shooting starts, the TD works with the producer and director to make sure all equipment needed for a production is available and working. He/she may also operate a switcher, digital effects generator, and other equipment during the production or during editing. The TD often acts as the editor as well. (See editor description.)

Education Needed: A degree from electronic technical school or an associate degree in broadcasting.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: A technical school degree and previous job experience.

Job Category: Editor The editor operates all the equipment and software connected to the non-linear editing process and works with the producer and director to assemble the finished program out of all the media available.

Education Needed: A bachelor’s degree in video production, a degree from an electronic technical school, or an associate degree in broadcasting.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: A technical school degree and previous job experience.

Job Category: Audio Engineer Audio people are responsible for the sound half of the TV signal and all the elements it contains—dialogue, sound effects, music, narration—and for mixing all those elements into a pleasing and accurate soundtrack. For audio, you need the ability to hear subtle differences in sound volume and quality.

Education Needed: Various backgrounds, including training and experience in music, theatre, radio, sound reinforcement, and electronics (or a combination).

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: A true love and appreciation of sound and how to produce and reproduce a quality product; a good balance of artistic (musical) and technical (electronic) abilities.

Job Category: Lighting Technician Electrical lighting technicians (ELT), or simply lighting tech, rig stage and location sets and control artificial lighting for art and entertainment venues or in video, television, or film production. In television, lighting technicians work under the direction of the director. Lighting technicians are responsible for the transport and set up of various pieces of equipment for managing light and shadow, contrast, depth of field, and/or visual effects. Lighting technicians may also lay electrical cables, wire fixtures, install color effects or image patterns, focus the lights, and assist in creating effects or programming sequences. A lighting technician’s work involves the safety of rigging and working with objects, which can be very heavy and get very hot.

Job Category: CGI Animator The CGI animator designs and produces complex, professional computer, and film on-screen graphics and animation for television or the web. He/she will work closely with the director, content producer, and others to design graphics that match the theme and look of the production and help tell the story or explain a concept.

Education Needed: A college degree in art, commercial art, graphic arts, or design, or a degree from an art school with two years of field experience.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: Potential animators, makeup artists, electronic graphics personnel, and photographers usually have to show a portfolio of their previous work.

Job Category: Photographer The photographer uses film or digital still cameras to create black and white prints or color photographs for news, advertising and other web or print needs. He/she also uses PhotoshopTM or other photo editing software to enhance the appearance of the images they produce.

Education Needed: A high school or college diploma with at least three years of professional photographic experience.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: Potential animators, makeup artists, electronic graphics personnel, and photographers usually have to show a portfolio of their previous work.

Job Category: Programming Operations Once the production is done, someone has to make sure people at home see it. The Programming Operations staff at KET coordinates scheduling and other activities for four digital channels, about 25,000 separate events each year, each timed down to a fraction of a second! After the program director makes up a schedule, other people fill in the breaks between programs with all the other material you see on the air (station IDs, “coming soon” promotional spots, funding credits, fillers, etc.). That information is transformed into requests for satellite feeds, video-recording schedules, listings, and printed and computer readable logs. The Programming Operations staff sees that everything gets scheduled, recorded, and played back without problems.

Education Needed: A degree from electronic technical school with on-the-job training or previous experience.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: These employees need the ability to manage large volumes of information and process information every day while being able to see and fix discrepancies and problems. They need speed, accuracy, and the ability to work under pressure. Data entry is an absolute must! Employees should be self-motivated, with the ability to take the initiative to solve problems, adapt to change, and work without constant supervision.

Job Category: Promotion A promotion person at KET writes and/or edits press releases for weekly press packets, articles for the monthly program guide, and brochures and annual reports; coordinates, writes, and places advertising for print, web, social, and broadcast media; plans and coordinates other types of publicity for KET programs and projects; maintains good relations with statewide media outlets; and helps with special events.

Education Needed: A college degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field. Five years of experience may be substituted for the degree.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: Narrative and persuasive writing skills; editing, proofreading and computer skills; the ability to plan and follow-up; work in a collaborative group; meet deadlines; pay attention to detail; previous experience. Applicants may be asked to take a test or complete a sample assignment as part of the job interview.

Job Category: Graphic Designer (Print) A graphic designer takes text, illustrations, and/or photos and assembles them electronically on the page to make a pleasing, readable design, appropriate to the audience and purpose of the piece. KET’s productions often have teacher’s guides to accompany them, and they get

Classroom Video Production: KET Careers © KET 2015 5 introduced to potential viewers through web graphics, program guides, newspaper and magazine ads, postcards, brochures, exhibits…even T-shirts! A KET graphic designer also creates print pieces. This person often does original artwork, too.

Education Needed: A degree in art or design.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: Graphic designers typically need to show a portfolio of work that demonstrates their artistry and knowledge of applications and software.

Job Category: Web Designer Very few video productions stand alone today in the world of the digital communications. Just about any production created in television has an accompanying website. Many video media products are now solely delivered over the web instead of the older more traditional routes. These websites may contain a wide variety of digital media from simple word graphics to PDFs, slide shows, virtual tours, simulations, interactives, audio and video streaming, and POD and VOD casts. A web designer needs a strong background in writing, visual arts and communication areas, graphics and layout, and an ability to quickly learn to use new graphics and web design packages. As with a more traditional video production crew, web team members have to be very skilled collaborators.

Education Needed: College or technical school background in electronic communications fields such as: digital graphics, art and design, language arts, strong background in using a variety of graphics and audio, editing and authoring software packages.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: Web designers typically need to show a portfolio of work that demonstrates their creativity and knowledge of applications, software, and code.

Job Category: Instructional Designer An instructional designer works with the production team and creates the design for instructionally sound educational media. The ID will insure that all content is accurate, research-based, original, and relevant and that it is clearly delivered in the most efficient and effective format (video, animation, graphics, text, or interactive applications).

Education Needed: A bachelor’s degree or higher in education or instructional systems design. Related work experience is desired.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: An instructional designer will understand pedagogy and possess technical skills with knowledge of various authoring tools and content management systems. He or she must also be creative, thorough, articulate, possess solid research and communication skills, and work well in teams.

Job Category: Business Office Personnel The business office supports KET’s production and programming functions by budgeting, accounting for revenue and expenses, monitoring purchases to make sure they follow KET’s own policies and government regulations, and administering payroll. Financial reports from the business office help KET managers make good financial decisions. Employees here need to

They need skills related to payroll and associated tax reports and the preparation of annual reports, and year-end audit work papers.

Education Needed: A high school diploma, with a college degree necessary for more specialized accounting functions. Related work experience is always desirable.

What Supervisor Looks for When Hiring: Business office employees must have patience for working with details; be comfortable with math; and be able to present accurate, neat, understandable reports.
