Modasa Peta and Prantij Taluka of Ahmedabad district and some villages from Kaira, Panch, Mahals and Mehsana districts were added to it. Most of the villages of the former Gadhwada Thana and five villages of the former Indian State of Idar were subsequently transferred from Sabarkantha to Mehsana district before the 1951 Census took place. The population of the district according to the 1951 Census was 684,017 and its area according to the area figure furnished by the Surveyor General, India, was 2,845.5 square miles. This Handbook contains tables for Sabarkantha district, compiled after the 1951 Census of India. The main results of the 1951 Census are embodied in the State Tables published for the States of Bombay, Saurashtra and Kutch. In this Handbook, the data are exhibited in greater detail. The numbers given to tables in this publication correspond to those given in the State Census Report. The following tables for the district have, however, not been included in this Handbook :- A-H.-Variation in population during fifty years. A-IV.-Towns classified by population with variations since 1901. D-IV.-Migrants. In the E-Summary table, in this Handbook, some columns have been omitted. In the case of the C-Series of tables, excepcC-I, the data were extracted on the basis of a sample count of approximately 10 per cent. of the census slips instead of a full count of all the slips. The C-! table was prepared from a 4 per cent. sample of the households recorded in the National Register of Citizens relating to each town or village. In 1941, the population figures were exhibited according to communities in the 'Village Handbooks' published by the Government of Bombay. In 1951, the basis of classification at the census was changed from a social to an economic one, and the figures for villages given in the Primary Census Abstracts·and in tables A-Y, B-l, B-II, C-1I and E, are according to the following eight Livelihood Classes :- Agricultural Classes I.-Cultivators of land, wholly or mainly owned; and their dependants. J I.-Cultivators of land, wholly or mainly unowned ; and their dependants. III.-Cultivating labourers; and their dependants. IV.-Non-cultivating owners of land; agricultural rent receivers; and their dependants. Non-Agrkultural Classes. Persons (including dependants) who derive their principal means of livelihood from-i Y.-Production other than cultivation. VI.-Commerce. VII.-Transport. VIII.-Other services and miscellaneous sources. 1)epen'dants whether earning or t1on-earnirtg, were Classified at the census according to the principal means of livelihood of the persons on whom they were dependent. The Primary Census Abstracts which contain basic information in respect of every village and town have been arranged according to talukas and petas, units into which every district is divided for administrative purposes. The taluka was, however, too small a unit to adopt for preparing the main census tables. Therefore in the B, C and D series of tables figures have been giveQ for tracts and not for talukas and petas. Before sorting the census slips and tabulating the results, tracts were formed by combining the rural and urban areas of two or more talukas or petas. The tracts into which Sabarkantha district was divided for this purpose are shown b.elow :- Rural Tracts: (1) Rural areas of Himatnagar and Bhiloda Talukas and Vijaynagar Peta. (2) Rural areas of Khedbrahma and Idar Talukas. (3) Rural areas of Mo~asa and Meghraj Talukas and Malpur Peta. (4) Rural areas of Bayad and Prantij Talukas. Urhan Tracts: 0) Urban areas of IdaI' and Himatnagar Talukas. (2) Urban areas of Modasa and Prantij Talukas. Urban areas comprise the towns shown in Table A-Y. Shortly before the 1951 population census, a census of Small Scale Industries was taken and lhe results of this census are given in the table called' Small Scale Industries Census-Employment in Establishments' includl!d in this Handbook. The intention was to find out something about Cottage and Home Industries, and small work­ shops. The larger establishments, that is, power-using establishments with 10 or more workers and non-power using establishments with twenty or more workers, were excluded from the scop~ of the enquiry as they now submit returns under the Factory Act. The enquiry did not concern itself also with workers functioning on their own and not employ­ ing other people, except when looms were'used. If even one loom was used a return was required. Otherwise the concep~ was of an enquiry which embraced all forms of associate activity where articles were pfoQuced, repaired or otherwise treated for sale, use or disposal. 4 A-GENERAL POPULATION A-I-AREA, HOUSES District: Occupied Houses.
