Family of Moses and Catherine Douglas

IRELAND IN THE 1700s

THE BRICK WALL.

(by Mavis Douglas)

My Father in Law passed to me an old family tree which was carefully prepared by Alice and Arthur Douglas in the 1960s. Why he gave it to me I do not know but it could have been that I was reading the book , “The Good Fight of Faith” which records William Magee Douglas and his missionary work in SA and perhaps finding the note in the book which read that he was descended from an old Methodist Minister who lived from 1771 – 1860. From those very simple extracts of information my interest was piqued. At this time Malcolm and Eleanor Douglas were also trying to trace the family history for different reasons and through contact with Aunty Kay (Douglas) we connected and continued our research together. Amazing Eleanor had found in Irvinestown in Ireland the baptismal certificate of William Magee Douglas with his father’s name William (b.1811) with the baptismal recorded by Rev. William Douglas (b.1771) in Ireland.

Now we had confirmation of the Irish connection, given to us by Alice and Arthur Douglas.

No mention was ever made of William’s siblings and parents. This brick wall was with us for many, many years and so it seemed as if this man William Douglas suddenly appeared with only a record that he was born nr.(near) and was converted at an early age. Moses Douglas(s) & Catherine Marsden P a g e | 2

Have you been to PRONI and tried to research in the microfiche? I was given the file number of the Shankhill records by my daughter but what a strain on the eyes as you try to decipher names and dates. Anyway, I was quickly moving forward to 1771 when suddenly the print became clearer. There it was William born 1771 to Moses Douglas of Kinnego. Not even the naming patterns which were in prevalent use at the time could have given us this information.

For generations our family has carried the tradition that the eldest of the eldest is called William and have done so to this day. How sad that Moses was not known to us, nor even any of his achievements as a gentleman farmer. Research has shown us that Moses leased lands from Lord Brownlow and from Katherine Marsden’s father, Robert Marsdin. Lord Brownlow not only encouraged farming but also the growing of flax encouraging many to turn this opportunity into a fledgling business. Lurgan became known as the linen center for Ireland and we can see through history that many of the next generations (including Douglas) were very successful in this venture.

We found Moses’s marriage to Katherine Marsden in 1768 in the Seagoe Parish registers.

[Let me sidestep a moment again and give many thanks to Barbara Freeburn (historian from Lurgan) and Samuel Malcolm who is in charge of the records of Shankhill parish. People who have become friends and who have so willingly given time to assist us in this difficult period of research. ]

So my daughter emailed Samuel not expecting any response, but my, how this gentleman filled in so many of the blanks and suddenly our William was surrounded by siblings (10 in all) and he was not even the eldest.

James was now the eldest brother of our William, born in 1769 and maybe, had this been known then our naming patterns could have possibly changed with the next and following generations.

EXPLANATION OF THE NAMING PATTERNS.

While researching your Irish ancestry, it's helpful to be aware of Scotch / Irish customary naming patterns regarding given names. This pattern was used to show respect for the previous generations. It is just a general guideline for there may be many differences and variations, but it definitely helps if you are tracing genealogy as the same names seem to crop up frequently within families.

First born son named after his father's father

Second born son named after his mother's father

Third born son named after his father

Fourth born son named after his father's oldest brother

Fifth born son named after his father's 2nd oldest brother or his mother's oldest brother

First born daughter named after her mother's mother

Second born daughter named after her father's mother

Third born daughter named after her mother

Fourth born daughter named after her mother's oldest sister

Fifth born daughter named after her mother's 2nd oldest sister or her Father’s eldest sister.

A page from the Lurgan Methodist Church shows Moses Douglas and family were Methodist. In fact, there are notes in the Methodist records that state that Moses opened his home to early Methodist meetings, before the first Methodist church was built.

Father, Moses died in 1813 and the Mother, Katherine died in 1819. All is recorded in the Moses Douglas(s) & Catherine Marsden P a g e | 4

registers of the Shankhill Parish Church in Lurgan.

The information which follows proves the notes of Alice and Arthur to be correct. A wonderful preservation - Still researching the Lord Hamilton connection or whether the family arrived with a George Douglas, also part of the plantation.

“Alice and Arthur mentioned that “The family originally came to Ireland with Lord Hamilton (still not proved) about 1611 and that they settled at or near Lurgan on the shores of lough Neagh and that an old family burial ground was at Lurgan or near it. They were correct! From this parcel of land one can see Lough Neagh in the distance. ( now unfortunately divided by the motor way.) The burial ground has been found in the Shankhill graveyard in Lurgan”.

Barbara also found according to old maps the original homestead of where William’s father and Katherine brought up their children. The old house (and cottages) are still on the grounds today.

Following are the pictures of the original Brownlow estate in 1706, the old homestead, the burial ground, Lough Neagh, and the Griffiths valuation which shows the original leases and today as it is in Lurgan.

And today the freeway cuts through the land.

We believe that the yellow house in the distance belonged to Hillary Douglas (grandson of Moses) and was originally a single story, thatch roofed home. The present owners explained to me the difficulty they had in installing a damp proof course as the foundation consisted of large boulders. Probably the location of the original Marsdin and then the Moses Douglas home. Moses Douglas(s) & Catherine Marsden P a g e | 7

Today the other old homes are used as barns. So fantastic that the owners have preserved the history.

Original homes are now used as barns today.

COPIES OF THE LEASES FROM William BROWNLOW TO THE MARSDEN AND DOUGLAS FAMILIES.

Moses Douglas(s) & Catherine Marsden P a g e | 14

SHANKILL PARISH CHURCH, LURGAN COUNTY .

This church is important to the Douglas family as all baptismal records are kept in the Church of Ireland. So even though Moses Douglas opened up his home (before the arrival of Wesley) to the early Methodist ministry, they still considered the Methodist meetings as part of the established church.

This church has occupied this site since 1725. The present building replaced the first church in 1863. The tower is still from the old church.

The font dates from 1684 and was originally in the Shankill graveyard church. William and his siblings could have been baptized in this font. Moses Douglas(s) & Catherine Marsden P a g e | 15

Birth records for the Children of Moses and Catherine (nee Marsden) Douglas:

(Records kindly located by Samuel at the Shankill Parish Church, from original documents still on archive there)

I (Samuel) have used your list of ancestors and found all of them save THOMAS. Robert was 1788 not 1789. I have found 9 altogether as follows

23-8-1769 JAMES SON OF MOSES Kinnego

Baptism date 1 21/04/1771 William son of Moses Douglas of Kinagoe, Lurgan (identified nowadays as Kinnego) no mothers name on record

2 07/11/1773 John son ditto Tanaghmore (near Kinnego)

3 16/04/ 75 Mary daughter ditto Lisacurrran (near Kinnego)

4 6/4/77 Henry son ditto

5 12/12/79 John son ditto

There was a John at 2 above. Sometimes if a younger offspring died a later child was given the dead ones name, I searched for John 7/11/73 death but no record.

6 13.11/85 Margaret daughter Tanaghmore

7 6/4/88 Robert son Dougher

8 16/3/91 Moses son Sego (Seagoe, nowadays) Mother Catherine mentioned

9 29/2/93 Hilary son ditto

We suspect that Moses is the son of a James Douglas was baptized in 1718 at Shankill Parish Church. The record is as follows: James Douglas, son of William Douglas Bap 1 Sept 1718 Using the Irish/ Scotch naming pattern we would expect Moses’ father to be James. Moses then names his next son William. I have noticed that our Douglas family places an emphasis on the male line when naming boys. However, we have not found Moses’ baptism, which would be sometime in the 1740’s.

Other Potential Clues for our Early Douglas Ancestor(s) to Ireland (Ulster) (Jennifer writing)

Above we have noted what Alice and Arthur Douglas recorded regards the tradition of our family roots to Ireland.

Moses and Catherine’s granddaughters’, Mary Judson (see Henry Douglas, son of Moses and Catherine), obituary tells us that the family had settled for several generations in the North of Ireland (1882).

With the family of George Douglas (see the chapter at the end of this book) we find in 1866 News articles testimony that states that his family (ancestors) had held the land in question (in Dougher) since the Plantation of Ulster (not known if this is the maternal or paternal line). That they perhaps came over with the Brownlow family. George’s grandson, William Douglas’s obituary says that the family settled near Kilmore in the plantation days.

Rosslyn Bagot, related to George Douglas’s family states that her family recollections were that they were from Black Douglas, and that the family was heavily involved in the Royal Orange Order in Lurgan. And that a family member helped William of Orange at the battle of Boyne.

Below, you will find complied records that we have found in research for our early Douglas roots. There is a William Douglas that we find in Clanrolla (1726) and then in Lisacorren (1735). Both of these Townlands are by Kilmore as well as Kinnego. This William MAY be the father of James Douglas born 1718 who we suspect is the father of Moses Douglas. I believe that further research of these Townlands and those surrounding them will be worth the time.
