Describe the processes involved at the three types of plate boundaries (divergent, convergent, and transform). See Table 2.1 as an outline. Be able to: o Describe the characteristic features/landforms that result. o Provide examples of geographic locations where these plate boundaries and features occur (example: transform boundary--San Andreas Fault--California). o Sketch each type of plate boundary. Describe how the information from seismic profiling differs from information from side-scan sonar. Describe the features and processes that occur along continental margins. Compare and contrast the characteristics, tectonic setting, and geographic location of passive and active continental margins. Be able to draw a cross-section across each type (Fig. 3.7). Compare the bathymetry of California's Continental Borderland to that of a typical continental margin (Fig. 3.8). Explain the origin of its unique shape. Describe the processes that occur in submarine canyons (Fig. 3.10). Describe the characteristics of a continental rise and abyssal plain. Explain which margin type and ocean would have the best developed rise and plain. Draw a typical cross section of an abyssal plain as it might show up in a seismic section (Fig. 3.12). How does this illustrate the relationship between abyssal hills and abyssal plains? . Describe the relationship between ocean trenches and volcanic arcs. Use a map to identify the location of most ocean trenches (Fig 3.13). Describe in detail the features and processes which occur along oceanic ridges (MOR’s). What might you see if you took a trip there in a submersible? Where could you see a part of the mid-ocean ridge above sea level? . Describe the difference between transform faults and fracture zones. Explain how transform faults and fractures zones are related to oceanic ridges and plate boundaries (Fig. 3.19, Table 3.1). Questions and Exercises: #1-9, 12 .

The four-day mission was a triumph, proving that humans could work in outer space, and even step into the great unknown, albeit tethered to their spacecraft. It catapulted the US ahead of the USSR in the space race. From then, Nasa’s goal was to beat the Russians to the moon. That meant weeks rather than days in space, in an isolated, claustrophobic environment. There was one perfect way to prepare humans for these conditions: going underwater. The world was gripped. If we could land people on the moon, why not colonise the ocean as well? Nasa scientists were not the first to dream of marine living. Evidence of submarines and diving bells can be found as far back as the 16th century. The literary grandfather of all things deep, Jules Verne, popularised the idea of a more sophisticated underwater life with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in 1872, but it was in the 20th century that the fascination really took hold. In the 1930s, American naturalist William Beebe and engineer Otis Barton collaborated on experimental submersibles called bathyspheres which set records for deep diving and opened up the underwater realm of plants and animals to science.

    MARGARET COHEN Denotation in Alien Environments: The Underwater Je Ne Sais Quoi H UMAN OBSERVATION OF THE AQUATIC environment received a dramatic boost with the development in England of the closed- helmet diving suit, designed by the German engineer Augustus Siebe, in the 1830s.1 Siebe’s invention was in wide use by the middle of the nineteenth century, part of a history of dive innovation, which in the 1940s would yield the basis of modern SCUBA, the aqualung, still the preferred equipment for diving today. As divers immersed themselves in the new underwater frontier, they observed life and conditions that differed dramatically from conditions on land. The underwater environment proved so unusual that the people who first sought to convey its features found themselves at a loss for words. Philippe Tailliez was the first captain of the French navy’s pathbreaking team for underwater research founded in 1945 (Groupe d’Etudes et de Recherches Sous-marines, known as GERS), which, among its activities, tested the aqualung co-invented by its most famous member, Jacques-Yves Cousteau. When Tailliez was asked by a fellow diver in the orbit of GERS, Philippe Diol´e, to describe ‘‘how things looked at ...a depth of 30 to 45 fathoms [about 180–290 feet],’’ then at the limit of accessibility, Tailliez responded with ‘‘a doubtful expression: ‘It’s not possible. Ocean exploration is not the province of any single culture. Polynesians, Phoenicians, Norsemen— all were fabulous sailors and explorers. Humans managed to reach islands and continents isolated by oceans—sometimes by relatively shorter island hops as in the population of Australia, sometimes by sailing into the unknown across whole oceans to reach distant places like the Hawaiian Islands. In the process they invented technologies that enabled them to explore more effectively and safely—better vessels and navigation systems based on the position of the sun and stars. Humans are by nature record keepers and collectors of information and materials because knowledge enhances survival. If the explorers returned home, they brought new knowledge as well as materials such as metals, plants and animals. Much of that new information would be called science today. Most United States students take American history. Hence, their knowledge of ocean exploration may be focused on the discovery and exploration of the New World by Europeans. Portuguese, Spanish, and English explorers from the second half of the last millennium are most familiar to them. These explorers kept journals and records that we still read today. They took artists and natural historians with them to document what they found.
