Mrs. Pringle was the housekeeper. As for the head nurse, the under nurse, and the nursery maid, their feelings cannot be described. The head nurse laid one hand upon the polished marble balustrade and stared stupidly before her, the under nurse stood rigid and pale, leaning against the polished marble wall, and the nursery-maid collapsed and sat down upon the polished marble step, just beyond the limits of the velvet carpet, and frankly burst into tears. The Lady Gwendolen Lancaster-Douglas-Scroop, youngest daughter of the ninth Duke of Cranston, and aged six years and three months, picked herself up quite alone, and sat down on the third step from the foot of the grand staircase in Cranston House. "Oh!" ejaculated the butler, and he disappeared again. "Ah!" responded the grooms of the chambers, as they also went away. "It's only that doll," Mrs. Pringle was distinctly heard to say, in a tone of contempt. The under nurse heard her say it. Then the three nurses gathered round Lady Gwendolen and patted her, and gave her unhealthy things out of their pockets, and hurried her out of Cranston House as fast as they could, lest it should be found out upstairs that they had allowed the Lady Gwendolen Lancaster-Douglas-Scroop to tumble down the grand staircase with her doll in her arms. -

PRIVILEGED ATTORNEY-CLIENT COMMUNICATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SECOND AMENDED AND RESTATED LICENSE AGREEMENT (“SPIDER-MAN”) CREATIVE ISSUES This memo summarizes certain terms of the Second Amended and Restated License Agreement (“Spider-Man”) between SPE and Marvel, effective September 15, 2011 (the “Agreement”). 1. CHARACTERS AND OTHER CREATIVE ELEMENTS: a. Exclusive to SPE: . The “Spider-Man” character, “Peter Parker” and essentially all existing and future alternate versions, iterations, and alter egos of the “Spider- Man” character. All fictional characters, places structures, businesses, groups, or other entities or elements (collectively, “Creative Elements”) that are listed on the attached Schedule 6. All existing (as of 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that are “Primarily Associated With” Spider-Man but were “Inadvertently Omitted” from Schedule 6. The Agreement contains detailed definitions of these terms, but they basically conform to common-sense meanings. If SPE and Marvel cannot agree as to whether a character or other creative element is Primarily Associated With Spider-Man and/or were Inadvertently Omitted, the matter will be determined by expedited arbitration. All newly created (after 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that first appear in a work that is titled or branded with “Spider-Man” or in which “Spider-Man” is the main protagonist (but not including any team- up work featuring both Spider-Man and another major Marvel character that isn’t part of the Spider-Man Property). The origin story, secret identities, alter egos, powers, costumes, equipment, and other elements of, or associated with, Spider-Man and the other Creative Elements covered above. The story lines of individual Marvel comic books and other works in which Spider-Man or other characters granted to SPE appear, subject to Marvel confirming ownership. -

Hidden Heroines: The Portrayal of Women in American Superhero Comics By: Esmé Smith Junior Research Project Seminar Introduction The first comic books came out in the 1930s. Superhero comics quickly became one of the most popular genres. Today, they remain incredibly popular and influential. I have been interested in superhero comics for several years now, but one thing I often noticed was that women generally had much smaller roles than men and were also usually not as powerful. Female characters got significantly less time in the story devoted to them than men, and most superhero teams only had one woman, if they had any at all. Because there were so few female characters it was harder for me to find a way to relate to these stories and characters. If I wanted to read a comic that centered around a female hero I had to spend a lot more time looking for it than if I wanted to read about a male hero. Another thing that I noticed was that when people talk about the history of superhero comics, and the most important and influential superheroes, they almost only talk about male heroes. Wonder Woman was the only exception to this. This made me curious about other influential women in comics and their stories. Whenever I read about the history of comics I got plenty of information on how the portrayal of superheroes changed over time, but it always focused on male heroes, so I was interested in learning how women were portrayed in comics and how that has changed. -

93 David Hare, Surrealism, and the Comics Mona Hadler Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center, CUNY The history of the comic book in the United States has been closely allied with mass culture debates ranging from Clement Greenberg’s 1939 essay “Avant-Garde and Kitsch” to Fredric Wertham’s attack on the comic book industry in his now infamous 1954 book, Seduction of the Innocent. An alternative history can be constructed, however, by linking the comics to the expatriate Surrealist community in New York in the thirties and early forties with its focus on fantasy, dark humor, the poetics and ethics of evil, transgressive and carnivalesque body images, and restless desire. Surrealist artists are well known for their fascination with black humor, pulp fi ction, and crime novels—in particular the popular series Fantômas. Indeed, the image of the scoundrel in elegant attire holding a bloody dagger, featured in the writings of the Surrealist Robert Desnos (Color Plate 10), epitomized this darkling humor (Desnos 377-79).1 Pictures of Fantômas and articles on the pulp market peppered the pages of Surrealist magazines in Europe and America, from Documents in France (1929-1930) to VVV and View in New York in the early forties. By moving the discussion of the comics away from a Greenbergian or Frankfurt school discourse on mass culture to the debates surrounding Surrealism, other issues come to the fore. The comics become a site for the exploration of mystery, the imagination, criminality, and freedom. The comic book industry originated in the United States in the late thirties and early forties on the heels of a booming pulp fi ction market. -

USING AND ANALYZING POLITICAL CARTOONS EDUCATION OUTREACH THE COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG FOUNDATION This packet of materials was developed by William Fetsko, Colonial Williamsburg Productions, Colonial Williamsburg. © 2001 by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Virginia INTRODUCTION TO LESSONS Political cartoons, or satires, as they were referred to in the eighteenth century, have provided a visual means by which individuals could express their opinions. They have been used throughout history to engage viewers in a discussion about an event, issue, or individual. In addition, they have also become a valuable instructional resource. However, in order for cartoons to be used effectively in the classroom, students must understand how to interpret them. So often they are asked to view a cartoon and explain what is being depicted when they really don’t know how to proceed. With that in mind, the material that follows identifies the various elements cartoonists often incorporate into their work. Once these have been taught to the students, they will then be in a better position to interpret a cartoon. In addition, this package also contains a series of representative cartoons from the Colonial period. Descriptors for these are found in the Appendix. Finally, a number of suggestions are included for the various ways cartoons can be used for instructional purposes.
