Follow the saints, because those who follow them will become them.

--Pope St. Clement I

St. Clement was the fourth Pope (88-99 A.D.), and like his predecessors, including Peter, a martyr. We possess several of his letters, giving us a window through which we see vividly the life of the early Church. His name is included in the list of saints mentioned in the first Eucharistic Prayer, the so-called Roman Canon.

My dear parish family,

As I’ve noted before, one of the most interesting websites I’ve come across in a long time is called Helenadaily.com, the work of a woman named Carrie Gress. I go to the site everyday and never fail to find one or two very interesting and helpful items on it. Gress must view dozens of other sites, many of which I’m unfamiliar with, in order to put together on her site ten of the best articles she discovers.

She’s obviously a very bright lady, having a Ph.D. in philosophy. For those of you who don’t know what it takes to get such a degree: thirty (or is it sixty, I’m not sure) credits in graduate philosophy after securing an M.A., a book length doctoral thesis that must be defended before a panel of experts, and a reading knowledge of French and German. She’s also a wife and mother, as her site makes clear. And she’s the author of several very good books, three of which have the Blessed Virgin Mary as their focus.

One of these is a beautiful book for children preparing them for consecration to Mary. It uses stories from literature and the Bible to illustrate the nature of virtue and love of Mary and Jesus. It’s called Marian Consecration for Children. It would be a wonderful book for parents to read to their children. They’d probably get a lot out of it themselves. Not long ago one of the Helena Daily articles highlighted a book that detailed research showing that one of the very best things you can do for young children is read picture books to them. It changes and prepares their brains for the future of learning in a way nothing else does.

Gress’ most recent book is Anti-Mary Exposed, a well-documented and devastat- ing critique of radical feminism that also explains the way Mary can lead individuals and society to a healthier of sexual relationships, marriage, and motherhood.

She’s also written The Marian Option, her take on how Mary can keep us on track in the perilously anti-Christian atmosphere in which we are currently living.

Give Helenadaily.com a try. If you have children or grandchildren, think about getting hold of Marian Consecration for Children. And if you’re feeling really ambitious, intellectually starved, or are looking for a deeper relationship with Mary, check out one of Carrie Gress’ other Marian books.

With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

It was not enough It was not enough Being only One; Pardoning the sinning; Thus His timeless act: God received a mother, Fathering the Son. God got a beginning.

It was not enough It was not enough Timeless Two to be; In their flesh to dwell; Overflow of love To save their place in Heaven Makes Them timeless three. He took their place in Hell.

It was not enough It was not enough Being God alone; Sun and moon were shaken; Angel minds He made See upon the cross To know and be known. God by God forsaken.

It was not enough It was not enough Making only spirit; Raising up the dead; He made matter’s music To feed our starving souls And the ears to hear it. He became our Bread.

It was not enough It was not enough Making minds and atoms; That He share His house; Fusing them together, He would share His bed, He made sirs and madams. Make each soul His spouse.

It was not enough When is it enough? Giving them a garden; Ask the mighty River They invented sin, Flowing on forever He invented pardon. With Love’s . Hear the answer: “Never!”

--Peter Kreeft

This poem, unusual for Kreeft in that he’s a philosopher, not a poet, appears as an appendix in his book, Doors in the Walls of the World. It is a simple, succinct, summary of what we know of God and His dealings with us as revealed in and by Jesus Christ. The poem appeared originally in Kreeft’s only novel, An Ocean Full of Angels. Three Christians were talking about prayer and the best position in which to pray. One said kneeling , another standing. The third, a lineman for the phone company said the best pray- ing he ever did was hanging upside down from a telephone pole.
