But only a few detailed studies and sporadic case reports are available on the prevalence of parasites in captive wild animals, and the knowledge of parasites and parasitic diseases in wild animals is still in its infancy. The family felidae comprises the subfamily felinae and pantherinae, and within those are all large and small cats. Most of the available reports on parasites in felids describe helminthic infections, which caused morbidities and occasional mortalities in the infected animals. The parasites most frequently found include the nematodes Toxocara, Toxascaris, Baylisascaris, Strongyloides, Gnathostoma, Dirofilaria and Galonchus, the trematode Paragonimus and the cestodes Echinococcus and Taenia. Almost all the studies identified the parasitic stages by classical parasitological techniques and only a few new studies confirmed the species using molecular techniques. Amongst the protozoan parasitic infections reported in felids: babesiosis, trypanosomiasis and coccidiosis are most commonly found. -

Abstract Many species of wild carnivores were maintained in zoos and national parks of Karnataka state. Tel.: +27 73 812 9141; E-mail: [email protected] Summary Historical evidence of tuberculosis (TB) affecting primarily captive rhinoceroses dates back almost two centuries. Although the causative Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) species has not been determined in many cases, especially for those that occurred before bacterial culture techniques were available, the spectrum of documented reports illustrates the importance of TB as cause of morbidity and mortality in different rhinoceros species across continents. In more recent years, sporadic suspected or confirmed cases of TB caused by Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) have been reported in semi-free or free-ranging rhinoceroses in South Africa. However, the true risk TB may pose to the health and conservation of rhinoceros populations in the country's large conservation areas where M. bovis is endemic, which is unknown. Underlying the current knowledge gap is the lack of diagnostic tools available to detect infection in living animals. As documented in other wildlife species, TB could establish itself in a rhinoceros population but remain unrecognized for decades with detrimental implications for wildlife conservation at large and should such animals be moved to uninfected areas or facilities. -

Price: ` 199.00 i PREFACE Recognition of Zoo Rules, 2009 emphasizes the need of 'Nursery for Hand Rearing of Animal Babies' in recognized zoos. Zoos in India also function as Rescue Centres for rehabilitation of many orphaned wild infants. Many Indian zoos have hand reared wild animals in different situations with varied success rate. However documentation of such experiences is far from desired level. The authors have attempted to compile information on more than 50 case reports of hand rearing on 25 species of mammals in Indian condition. Information on general hand rearing processes including initial care, dietary requirements, general husbandry, sanitation and common health problems encountered are also discussed in addition to the case reports. This publication is a result of an extensive literature survey, gathering of data recorded during hand rearing of different mammals at Nandankanan Zoological Park and collection of information on hand rearing of mammals carried out at some other Indian zoos. -

OESTROUS CYCLE OF THE ASIATIC ELEPHANT, ELEPHAS MAXIMUS, IN CAPTIVITY M. R. JAINUDEEN, J. F. EISENBERG and N. (Received 18th November 1970, accepted 26th May 1971) Summary. During the course of a programme to breed the Asiatic elephant, Elephas maximus, in captivity, the oestrous cycles of eleven adult females were studied. Two methods were used for detecting oestrus : (1) daily testing with a male elephant, and (2) urogenital smear cyto- logy. Overt signs of oestrus were not observed but 'standing' oestrus was detected in ten animals. The duration of oestrus ranged from 2 to 8 days with a mode of 4 days. Oestrous cycles in six animals ranged from 18 to 27 days with a mean of 22 days. Urogenital smear cytology failed to indicate accurately the onset of behavioural oestrus but increases in the number of cornified cells may occur before, during and slightly after behavioural oestrus. Considerable mating activity occurred during oestrus. A description of mating behaviour is presented. The findings are discussed in relation to breeding elephants in cap- tivity and to the phenomenon of temporal gland activity. INTRODUCTION In Ceylon, as in many other countries in South-East Asia, the Asiatic elephant, Elephas maximus has been kept in captivity since the earliest days of recorded history. Despite its close association with man, basic information regarding many aspects of reproduction (births in elephants in captivity are still not regularly observed) is surprisingly lacking for this mammalian species. -

It is crucial to breed elephants in captivity so that captive stocks do not need to be supplemented by removing animals from the wild. Unfortunately, captive breeding programs across the globe met with limited success and therefore more effort is needed to improve breeding in captivity. Endocrine profiling can help us understand the physiology of the captive elephants and help us direct our efforts to improve breeding in captivity. Non-invasive fecal sampling has been carried out to assess ovarian cyclicity of six female captive elephants at Nehru zoological park, Hyderabad and Mysore zoological park. Four of them showed ovarian cyclicity. Two male elephants were also monitored for assessment reproductive status and three musth sessions were recorded in one of the elephants over a period of one year. Cortisol and Testosterone concentrations were also measured during the musth period to understand the dynamics of cortisol and testosterone during Musth. No significant correlation was found between cortisol and testosterone during musth but elevated cortisol levels were observed during the period of musth. This study will help in building better breeding strategy and in turn improve breeding in captivity.
