Tomasello to Compete at US Olympic Team Trials

April 1, 2021 | Complete Release

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke assistant coach is taking his talents back to the mat, as he is set to compete at the US Olympic Team Trials at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

The event will run Friday through Saturday with the competition featuring six weight classes in men’s freestyle (57 kg, 65 kg, 74 kg, 86 kg, 97 kg, 125 kg). The champions from the U.S. Olympic Team Trials will become eligible to represent the United States at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, on August 1-7, 2021.

Tomasello enters the event in the 57kg freestyle bracket as the No. 7 seed and will face off against the No. 10 seed Zach Sanders, who is the current volunteer assistant coach at Minnesota. Tomasello, the four-time All-American and 2015 National Champion at 125 pounds at Ohio State, will face a fellow four-time All-American in Sanders, who competed for the Gophers.

The winner of that bout will face off against No. 2 Daton Fix, a current student-athlete at State. This past season, Fix entered the NCAA Championships as the No. 1 seed and made it to the championship match at 133 pounds for the second time in his career but fell to No. 2 Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State, 4-2 in Sudden Victory 2.

Tomasello is set to take the mat at 10 a.m. on Friday and will be coached by fellow Duke assistant coach Tom Erikson.
