Dear Parents/Carers,

My final assembly of the half term today was all about changes and I took the opportunity to share with the children some important changes that will be introduced next year regarding the names of our classes. Our School Council representatives have been very busy in recent weeks gathering feedback from classes and shortlisting to select the new class names. They have worked so hard on this project with Mr Larkham and were proud to announce these to the whole school today via a film they have made. If you would like to find out more and watch the film, I have uploaded it onto Seesaw and the school website.

There will also be some staffing changes next term. We are very sad to be saying goodbye to Mr Lowrie- Herz, who will be taking up a Deputy Headship at a local school. Miss Saunders will also be leaving us at the end of term to take up a part-time teaching position at another school and also pursue some other interests. We will also be sad to say goodbye to Mrs Smith, who works as a TA in Year 4, Mrs Newton, who works as a TA in Year 2 and Mr Sudlow who has done an excellent job teaching Year 5 whilst Mrs Allan has been on maternity leave. All members of staff will be leaving at the end of this term and will be greatly missed. We thank them all for their hard work and dedication during their time at Coleham.

Later this term, we will update you with information about staffing for next year and the Reception, Year 2 and Year 4 class splits. We will, of course, prepare transition events for all the year groups and videos for families, so that the children feel prepared and reassured before the summer holidays.

Belle Vue Arts Week

Many of the children in school have also been getting involved in Belle Vue Arts week. The theme this year is “wild” and many children have enjoyed making decorative bird boxes, which will be displayed in shops around the Coleham area. Many children have also created beautiful art work, which will be laminated and displayed around the local area too. Year 6 took part in a wild ‘Stickman’ workshop. Thank you to Miss Saunders and the BVAF for co-ordinating this creative project.

Eco-Council

Mrs Howson and the Eco Council started an exciting project yesterday. With the help of parent Mr Wrench, they plan to re-home some newts from the school conservation area to a newly built pond in the community garden at Brook Street called ‘The Chemists Patch’. They began their search today but could only find two females and so the next step will be to use bottle traps to find a male newt in summer. More updates to follow next half term.

School Trips

Please don’t forget that School Trips are coming up soon and the payment information is live on ParentPay.

Catering

The Catering Team are joining in with the national campaign Veg Power ‘Eat them to defeat them’ which is designed to inspire kids to eat vegetables and create life-long good food habits. For 6 weeks, we’ll be promoting a different vegetable at lunchtime and you can join in at family mealtimes using the Activity packs coming home with children today.

Summer Fun

We’ve planned some lunchtime fun for everybody for our last 6 weeks in school. Mr Williams will be re- launching the very popular ‘Coleham’s Got Talent’ every Friday lunchtime on the school field. The Catering team will be replacing the roast dinner on Wednesdays to a picnic style lunch. The children really enjoyed this when we had no electricity for Eco Day and so Mrs Perry and the staff will be serving a Picnic buffet complete with sandwiches and ice-cream. Please see the menu attached.

COVID reminders

Please remember that if your child tests positive for COVID having developed symptoms within 2 days of being at school, you must notify the school so that we can identify close contacts and advise self-isolation. Please contact us via email ([email protected] and [email protected]).

We have also been asked to remind parents that people should not travel to ‘amber’ and ‘red’ countries, and that strict rules on testing and quarantine remain in place to protect public health and the vaccination programme. Further information can be found in the guidance on red, amber and green list rules for entering England.

I hope that you all have a lovely half-term and will look forward to seeing you back in school on Monday 7th June 2021.

Kind Regards,

Ms C Jones Headteacher
