The astonishing 9 x 60 minute series, produced for A&E Network in the US and presented by Remini, finally gives a voice to long-standing victims of the Church of Scientology in America, despite public attempts by the Church to discredit them. Each episode features shocking stories of abuse, heartbreak and harassment from former members whose lives have been affected by the Church’s harmful practices, even well after they left the organisation. Throughout the series, Remini, along with high-level former Scientology executives and Church members, delve deeply in to individual accounts from ex-Church members and their families, through intimate interviews with Remini herself. Along with a team of former high-ranking Scientology insiders who understand the inner workings and policies of the organization, Remini gives the victims a chance to be heard, in this eye-opening series. In episode one, Leah begins her journey with a trip to Seattle to visit former Scientology executive Amy Scobee. After hearing Amy’s tragic story of being disconnected from her mother, Leah is determined to reveal the truth of what’s really going on in her former Church. • CBS' 'Young Sheldon' Has Strongest Comedy Opening in Four Years
CBS' 'Young Sheldon' Has Strongest Comedy Opening in Four Years 09.26.2017 CBS' Young Sheldon, arguably the show most likely to succeed this season, came out of the gate with a big bang, debuting at a 3.7 rating among adults 18-49 and 16.6 million viewers. That's the most-watched premiere rating for a new comedy since 2 Broke Girls debuted in 2011 and the highest-rated since The Crazy Ones in 2013. That said, both of those shows have since been canceled, with 2 Broke Girls ending its run after last season and The Crazy Ones - which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and the late, great Robin Williams as a daughter-father advertising team - failed to make it past season one. Young Sheldon debuted out of the show from which it's spun, The Big Bang Theory, and held almost all of its viewers. Big Bang, opening season 11, premiered at a 3.9 rating in the key demo and 17 million viewers. Young Sheldon was just teasing viewers with this early episode, however. It's not due to return until its official premiere on Nov. 2, after CBS completes its run of Thursday Night Football and the show can enter its regular time slot of Thursday at 8:30 p.m., behind The Big Bang Theory. Kevin Can Wait, starring Kevin James and featuring the arrival of Leah Remini among some viewer blowback, returned for season two at 9 p.m. with a 2.3 in the demo and 10.1 million viewers, while new sitcom Me Myself & I starring Bobby Moynihan and John Larroquette premiered at a 1.7 in the demo and 7.4 million viewers.

Uncovering the Anti-Queer Sentiment in the Dianetic Perspective At present, there is a groundswell of public sensational interest in the subject of Scientology; and, in fact, in the time since I began this research paper, a nine-episode documentary series has premiered and reached finale on A&E titled “Scientology and the Aftermath”— a personal project hosted by sitcom celebrity, ex-Scientologist, and author of Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, Leah Remini.1 I could not begin to enumerate the myriad exposés/memoirs of ex-Scientologists that have been published in recent years nor could I emphasize enough the rampant conspiracy theories that are at the disposal of any curious mind on what many have termed “the cult” of Scientology.

Law Offices of GARY S. SOTER Ms. Nancy Dubuc January 2, 2017 Page 2 • On December 25, the Washington Post wrote: “In a statement released on Christmas Eve, an A&E spokesman said the network learned that the show’s producers - from a third-party production company - made cash payments to “facilitate access” to participants, which violates A&E policy... Though some reality TV producers do pay their subjects, the network emphasized that it is against this practice for documentaries.” (emphasis added) • On December 28, Variety wrote: “A&E declined to comment to Variety on whether participants in ‘Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath’ were paid - other than Remini, who is an executive producer on the docuseries. But, an insider close to the network tells Variety that even if participants were paid, financial payments would be common practice for participants in a television docuseries.” (emphasis added). Tellingly, A&E has declined to comment on whether anyone other than Ms. Remini is being paid. That silence speak volumes, raising questions if, like the KKK show, the sources in Ms. Remini’s series were paid. (Church officials have confirmed that Mike Rinder, the interview subject of the entire second segment and an interview subject in subsequent segments, was indeed paid.) Slauson Productions unambiguously described both Ms. Remini and Mr. Rinder as subjects for their series. In his letter of August 3, 2016, Alex Weresow declined to meet with Church representatives unless the meeting were to: “involve our key subjects, including but not limited to Leah Remini and Mike Rinder.” The same letter, describes Mike Rinder as a “victim, witness, or both.” Both are being paid for their participation.

1 English 110 The Church The road for the Church of Scientology has been hard, but not necessarily long. Founded in 1954, and only recently recognized as a religion in the US as of 1992, this organization and religion has been placed in the spotlight a number of times, in part due to its large celebrity following (Scientology). In general scientology is focused on making the world a better place and followers aim to achieve this by finding “workable answers to problems that people face in their [daily] lives” (Scientology). This is achieved through the science of dianetics, that was created by founder L Ron Hubbard, and is described as “a psychotherapeutic technique for personal development” (Lee). The Church has not only amassed attention through their unusual background, the creation story of the religion involves an alien overlord, but it has also gained attention from negative allegations made by multiple ex-members. One example in particular are the comments Leah Remini has made defaming the Church of scientology by “claim[ing] Scientology officials were controlling and intimidating towards members” (Chiu). In addition to speaking about her exit from the Church in interviews, Leah Remini created a television show titled Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, which works to investigate other alarming reports from many others like her. Once Leah Remini came forward to the public about her exit from the Church, a discourse was then created in response to the credibility of the Church of Scientology, which included not only comments from her, but also an official statement from the Church of Scientology.

This paper provides an overview of the legal system of the religion of Scientology. To the members of the religion, this legal system supersedes and fully displaces the mainstream legal system. Scientology’s legal system is self-contained and independent, with rules, enforcement mechanisms, and correctional facilities. The overview provided in this paper will be useful to courts and to further research in the nascent yet vital field of Scientological legal research. The contents are as follows: INTRODUCTION; I. SOURCING; II. WITHIN AND WITHOUT; III. RULES; IV. ENFORCEMENT MECHANISMS; V. CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES; CONCLUSION. MARBURG JOURNAL OF RELIGION, Vol. 21, No. 1 (2019) 2 INTRODUCTION This paper provides a broad overview of the legal system of the religion of Scientology.1 No legal scholar has yet provided such an overview. This fact is somewhat perplexing, as the religion was founded some seventy years ago.2 More broadly, the literature on Scientology is far sparser than that on other recently founded religions such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints3 (two religions which count far more adherents than 1 I am grateful to Prof. Mark Antaki, Alec Sader and Olivier Lirette for their thoughtful comments on earlier drafts. In conducting research for this paper, I have had the opportunity to interact with several Scientologists. The Scientologists who I met at the Montreal and Los Angeles churches have all been kind and helpful.
