Petersen Nathan Weaver Olson The Foster House, 100 North First Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55401 With curriculum program by Dawn Peterson Ann Ericson May 2003 Expansion of the Waterpower Canal (1885) and Rebuilding of Tailrace Canals (1887-1892) The Construction of the Expanded Waterpower Canal and Rebuilding of the Tailrace Canals By the mid-1880s, the increasing number of mills and the demand for waterpower was jeopardizing the availability of that power, particularly as the height and flow of the Mississippi fluctuated from season to season. In 1883, the Minneapolis Mill Company hired William de la Barre as an engineer and agent for the waterpower works. A number of the mills had installed auxiliary steam engines to supplement the waterpower. Meanwhile De la Barre proposed to solve the waterpower problem by increasing the head and fall available. Working on the West Side canal (Minnesota Historical Society) According to Kane, “De la Barre undertook to deepen the canal and lower the tailraces under his jurisdiction, while the millers promised to lower their wheel pits, tailraces, and headraces. Before the year ended, De la Barre had deepened the canal from 14 to 20 feet and lengthened it from 600 to 950 feet. The expansion increased its flowage capacity from 30 to 40 per cent and raised the water level to produce more power by bring water to the lessees’ wheels at a greater head. -

A comprehensive history such as Minneapolis: The Story of a City, made easily available to the people of the community, becomes a valuable contribution to their knowledge, a permanent record of the community’s origin and development. The book’s account of obstacles overcome, of continuous growth from year to year, pro¬ vides a stimulus for still further growth and improvement. To people living elsewhere who may see this book, it will, I believe, be an invitation to consider Minneapolis as a good place in which to live, or an interesting place to visit—a point of some importance in consideration of Minneapolis’ present active effort to attract new residents, new business, and more vacation visitors. The casual reader of this book, even though he enjoy and profit by its contents, scarcely will understand the vast amount of careful study and research, the thought and planning given to its contents and arrangement, and the long hours of writing, editing and revi¬ sion which made it the well done volume that it is. -

Early Minneapolis Theaters
EARLY MINNEAPOLIS THEATERS' Contrary to general opinion, the first theater in Minneapolis — that is, the first place of amusement with full stage equip ment — appears to have been Harrison's Hall. The Pence Opera House, often spoken of as the first theater, came eight years after Harrison's Hall, which was erected in 1864. Prior to that year the nearest approach to a theater had been Har- monia Hall, built in 1859 at First Avenue North and Second Street. Still earlier places of amusement were Central Hall at St. Anthony (1853), Woodman's Hall (1857), Fletcher's Hall, Boardman's Hall, and Woodman's Hall Number 2, all of them merely gathering places with slightly elevated plat forms at one end of the room. Harmonia Hall boasted a pro scenium, a decided advance among these temples of Thespis, and this proscenium is still standing — a bizarre anachronism in a remodeled building now used for the storage of hides. Gen erations of strolling players, forgotten plays, the genesis of the present symphony orchestra, amateur players forgetting their lines, the Swiss Bell Ringers, Fay Templeton, stereopticon lec tures, " Buffalo Gals " sung in a blackface act — the pro scenium with diamond-shaped panels set at decorative intervals has seen them all. Rival theaters crowded into the neighborhood of the Har monia and these in turn disappeared. Project Background and Methodology
PROJECT BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY The Minneapolis Riverfront District has selected “Arts and Culture on the Riverfront” as its promotional theme for 2006, to coincide with the opening of the new downtown public library and Guthrie Theater. The Minnesota Historical Society, with funding from the Saint Anthony Falls Heritage Board, hired Hess Roise and Company to conduct historical research on: • The first theaters, music halls, art galleries, and cultural events along the riverfront. • Key events in the development of arts and culture on the riverfront. • “Headlines of the day” and other memorable stories related to the art and cultural life of the riverfront area. • Advertisements, handbills, and other promotional materials relating to riverfront art and culture. • Key artists and other individuals prominent in the cultural life of the riverfront. • Informal arts and culture, such as music in the home, folk art, and cuisine, of nineteenth-century residents, including immigrants. • Public and educational institutions that have contributed to the cultural life of the area, such as the Pillsbury Library. Because contemporary newspaper advertisements and accounts provide the primary documentation for most cultural events on the riverfront, the newspaper collections at the Minnesota Historical Society in Saint Paul were particularly helpful for this project. Research was also conducted at the Hennepin History Museum; Wilson Library and the Performing Arts Archives at Elmer Andersen Library at the University of Minnesota; and the Minneapolis
