Julio Cammarota: When I began my research of youth, fifteen years ago, I was convinced that I would study anything but education! But in the ten years that I have known and worked alongside you, you’ve subtly challenged me to move deeper and deeper into an exploration of education, broadly, and youth-as-students, specifically. For that, I am deeply grateful. My thinking around issues of youth, identity, and power has also benefitted tremendously from the insights and challenges of other scholars at the University of Arizona, including Jen Roth-Gordon – who put considerable time into reviewing an early draft of this dissertation; Norma González; and Norma Mendoza-Denton. Norma M.D.: Your words of support and encouragement during a chance run-in at the coffee shop could not have come at a more opportune time. I was also fortunate to have some lively conversations with Tom Sheridan about the youth actions in Tucson as the Ethnic Studies ban was going into effect, and have benefitted enormously from his deep historical analyses of Tucson and Arizona history and politics. My very presence in Tucson, both the site of my graduate studies and my fieldwork, owes in multiple ways to the very early influence of Richard Handler, my first anthropology professor, and later – I am so proud to say – a friend and colleague. Richard: You offered an 18-year old college freshman a radical glimpse into cultural anthropology, broadly, and theories of power, culture and the state, specifically. It feels so very fitting that, almost twenty years later, I will have finished my tenure at the University of Arizona – the graduate program that you recommended – writing about nationalism and cultural nationalism. Also at the University of Virginia was Gertrude Fraser, who was not only my first model of an applied and public anthropologist, but who profoundly shaped my foundation as a feminist theorist. The most profound forms of support, guidance, intellectual solidarity and deep, authentic caring have, over the past decade, come from my colleague-friends, most particularly Tara Deubel Boyer, Michelle Hale, Kim Abraham, and Gillian Newell Gallaga. Gillian: Your relentless encouragement gave this exhausted mama, still trying to find her footing as a mother-academic, the energy and faith she needed to start up the writing process. Michelle: I cannot imagine finishing this process, after our decade of highs and lows together, without you! Tara and Kim: your endless personal kindnesses and intellectual insights have inspired and sustained me, and have without a doubt shaped me as a scholar and an individual.     Los Veteranos—Latinos in WWII Over 500,000 Latinos (including 350,000 Mexican Americans and 53,000 Puerto Ricans) served in WWII. Exact numbers are difficult because, with the exception of the 65th Infantry Regiment from Puerto Rico, Latinos were not segregated into separate units, as African Americans were. When war was declared on December 8, 1941, thousands of Latinos were among those that rushed to enlist. Latinos served with distinction throughout Europe, in the Pacific Theater, North Africa, the Aleutians and the Mediterranean. Among other honors earned, thirteen Medals of Honor were awarded to Latinos for service during WWII. In the Pacific Theater, the 158th Regimental Combat Team, of which a large percentage was Latino and Native American, fought in New Guinea and the Philippines. They so impressed General MacArthur that he called them “the greatest fighting combat team ever deployed in battle.” Latino soldiers were of particular aid in the defense of the Philippines. Their fluency in Spanish was invaluable when serving with Spanish speaking Filipinos. These same soldiers were part of the infamous “Bataan Death March.” On Saipan, Marine PFC Guy Gabaldon, a Mexican-American from East Los Angeles who had learned Japanese in his ethnically diverse neighborhood, captured 1,500 Japanese soldiers, earning him the nickname, the “Pied Piper of Saipan.” In the European Theater, Latino soldiers from the 36th Infantry Division from Texas were among the first soldiers to land on Italian soil and suffered heavy casualties crossing the Rapido River at Cassino. The 88th Infantry Division (with draftees from Southwestern states) was ranked in the top 10 for combat effectiveness.

Abstract New technology, nonfarm labor conditions, farm prices, and government policies have altered both the size and composition of the hired farm work force. Average annual farm employment dropped 70 percent between 1945 and 1987. Although family members continue to provide the major portion of agricultural labor, hired farmworl<ers contribute relatively more labor now, 36 percent in 1987 compared with 22 percent in 1945. The numbers of domestic workers and legally admitted foreign nationals doing hired farmwork have stabilized in recent years after wide variations responding to wartime labor shortages, changes in government work programs, and increased mechanization. The number of illegal aliens working in U.S. agriculture is unknown owing to lack of accurate data, but the increase in apprehensions of these aliens after 1965 suggests a large population.

    Style Sheet for Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies Articles submitted to Aztlán are accepted with the understanding that the author will agree to all style changes made by the copyeditor unless the changes drastically alter the author’s meaning. This style sheet is intended for use with articles written in English. Much of it also applies to those written in Spanish, but authors planning to submit Spanish-language texts should check with the editors for special instructions. 1. Reference Books Aztlán bases its style on the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition, with some modifications. Spelling follows Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition. This sheet provides a guide to a number of style questions that come up frequently in Aztlán. 2. Titles and Subheads 2a. Article titles No endnotes are allowed on titles. Acknowledgments, information about the title or epigraph, or other general information about an article should go in an unnumbered note at the beginning of the endnotes (see section 12). 2b. Subheads Topical subheads should be used to break up the text at logical points. In general, Aztlán does not use more than two levels of subheads. Most articles have only one level. During the war and for decades there- after, this style traveled across time and place, appealing to youths whose lives otherwise diverged. It turned up in wartime Great Britain and Aus- tralia, despite orders by their governments to conserve cloth for the du- ration. Bahamian farm hands, brought to Florida to pick crops, surprised their hosts by appearing in zoot suits. Canada had its own versions of zoot-suit unrest in the summer of 1944, and in occupied France, zazous sporting long coats and narrow trousers outraged officials. After the war, young people in other countries—from the stiliagi of the Soviet Union to the tsotsis of South Africa—picked up and adapted elements of an extreme style that had originated in American culture.

Jamian Juliano-Villani: very very visceral “Being conscious of fucking up assassinates creativity,” declares Jamian Juliano-Villani, a pow- erful force who charges into unknown territory. Her painting process is maniacal, she’s hungry for data, voraciously reading, watching and absorbing stimulation, then filtering it through her mind and hand and into dynamic paintings that provoke weird feelings and intriguing confusion. Backed by the bright light of a projector, she beams countless layers of imagery onto the canvas to render a storified collage of in- formation. Through an obsessive absorption of visual culture, she has gained an ency- clopedic knowledge of obscure, provocative facts that inform her work—her own world of fiction inspired by truth. Her work is unusual, her place in our future history is already carved out, and she’s about to get crunk. Kristin Farr: What are some fascinating facts you’ve learned or obsessed about in your search for source material? Jamian Juliano-Villani: I just recently watched E.T. again. Turns out Steven Spielberg built the set ten feet above the ground so the actor playing E.T. was never seen by the other child actors, which means they actually thought that E.T. was a real alien, and Spielberg specifically filmed the movie in chronological order to get a genuine emotional response from the child actors. Also, insanely, the actor that plays E.T. was, in reality, a 12-year-old born without legs who would perfect E.T.’s waddle since he was experienced with walking on his hands.
