An inspiring little biography on the life of the Catholic Church’s youngest saint.By Christian EnglerSt. John Bosco’s biography of his pupil, St. Dominic Savio, is not the typical average bestseller biography. Rather, what it really is is a succinct synopsis of one man’s personal observations and experiences with a holy youth who stayed within the religious order he founded: The Salesians of Don Bosco (or the Salesian Society, officially named the Society of St. Francis de Sales). In this little book, comprising only of 152 pages, St. John Bosco is like a religious field anthropologist, who, from close and far, notes with scrupulous detail the life of a young boy who had a singular aim in life, and that was to be as pleasing to God in all and any respects imaginable, to strive to the honors of the alter and become a saint. In this book, he recounts Dominic Savio’s loving and pragmatic upbringing, his deep interior and exterior prayer life and the overall comforting presence that Savio conveyed to those he knew and to those who knew him, if only from afar. His thirst for sanctity knew no bounds, and every mundane task was seen as an opportunity to grow in holiness. While St. John Bosco encouraged the seeking out of holiness in the every day, and especially in the Holy Mass as well as with the rosary and confession, he wanted the kids who lived under his roof to also be just kids, to be able to laugh and enjoy the less serious moments in life, and under Bosco’s tutelage, Savio and his students grew in leaps and bounds. Occasionally, there were moments of scrupulosity that needed to be addressed. And there were also religious practices that needed to be lessoned in their extremity, but with John Bosco’s guidance something beautiful began to expand, most evidently seen in young Dominic. He had the wisdom of the experienced, and when his death was imminent, despite the denial of all those around him, Dominic was prepared, patient and consoling. The portrait painted of St. Dominic by his teacher St. John, showed a conscientious youth with a deep an abiding loyalty to all those around him. He had deep intellect and a serenity to accept all things, even if they were bad. This biography also shows St. Dominic’s day-by-day personal prayers and jottings, tidbits that give an illumination into the thinking of the Church’s youngest non-martyred saint. A pretty good read.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The master writes about the pupilBy Bobby BambinoThis book is a biography about St Dominic Savio written by Saint John Bosco. A saint writing about the life of a saint. These are the most invaluable lives of the saints books. Yet unlike, say, Bonaventure's life of Francis of Assisi, here we have the master writing about his pupil. Dominic died at a very young age, and his master John Bosco thankfully wrote Savio's definitive life. At only 150 pages and large print, it is a very easy book to read.Though we are adults and "mature", we can learn so much from the child-like faith that Dominic showed throughout his entire life (and, I believe, taken out of this world early by Our Lord precisely so that he would always have that child like innocence). Before making his first communion, Savio wrote in his journal 4 resolutions. 1. Go to confession and holy communion as frequently as possible. 2 Sanctify Sundays and festivals. #. Befriend Mary and Jesus 4. Death over sin. It is that last one that we too often forget. Do we have a firm resolution to prefer death to the slightest sin, to the slightest offense against God? God will understand, we say. This little sin won't hurt anything. Foolish people, learn from the example of the saints. The slightest sin is more displeasing to God than all the natural good works we can possibly do. We see furthermore that Savio is exacting and particular to detail, no matter how trivial something seemed. Again, this is a sign not of a lover of the letter of the law, but a deep desire to avoid displeasing God at all costs. We even read in Chapter VII that he chose his friends carefully so as to avoid scandal and not put himself in the near occasion of sin.It is also worth noting that in Chapter XVIII, we read that Dominic recommends "The Hidden Treasure" by St Leonard of Port Maurice. Please let this sink in. We have a saint recounting to us and endorsing the fact that a different saint recommended the writings of a third saint. He who has ears to hear...After recounting Dominic's short life, Bosco then recounts his happy death when Dominic went to his eternal reward. May we all experience such a beautiful and holy death as St Dominic did.St Dominic Savio, ora pro nobis!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. These days our teens are easily influenced by bad influences in their environmentBy StormtrooperThese days our teens are easily influenced by bad influences in their environment.Dominic Savio written by another Saint, John Bosco is a great true biography about the little Saint's teen life particularly around age 13 to 14. He died soon after. It addresses experiences he faced in school and how he handled them gracefully. If you want to plant good seeds in your teen boys, this is a must read for them.Plus, it's not a big book and chapters are short so it's very easy for teens to read. “Let us leave a saint to write the life of a saint,” is said to have been the exclamation of the Angelic Doctor St. Thomas Aquinas, when he entered the cell of his brother doctor, St. Bonaventure, and found him absorbed in writing the life of his spiritual father, St. Francis. The peculiar value of the present little book is that it may be said once more to present the spectacle of a saint writing the life of a saint. Only whereas in St. Bonaventure’s case a son was writing the life of a father, in this case we have the unique example of a father writing the life of his spiritual son. The writer, the saintly Don Bosco, has already been declared Venerable, and the process for his Beatification is proceeding in Rome. Little Domenico Savio, whose biography was originally published by Don Bosco very shortly after the holy child’s death, was, as will be seen, Don Bosco’s spiritual child, and it is a subject of great joy to all his admirers that his cause also has at last been introduced at Rome with the approval of the Holy See. Note from St Athanasius Press. St Dominic Savio was canonized as the youngest non Martyr Saint on June 12, 1954 by Pope Pius XII. This biography written by St John Bosco of his pupil, Dominic Savio was a critical factor in his canonization.
