The city has a population of 775,033 of whom 613,288 live in the Municipality of Copenhagen and the Copenhagen urban area has a population of 1,308,893 (as of January 2018). Copenhagen is situated on the eastern coast of the island of Zealand DAY 2: Denmark - Christiania Nyhavn harbour The Royal Palace of Amalienborg Freetown Christiania, also known as Christiania, is a self-proclaimed autonomous anarchist district of about 850 to 1,000 residents, covering 34 hectares in the borough of Christianshavn in the Danish capital city of Copenhagen. Nyhavn is a 17th-century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in Copenhagen, Denmark. Stretching from Kongens Nytorv to the harbour front just south of the Royal Playhouse, it is lined by brightly.Amalienborg is the home of the Danish royal family, consists of four identical classical palace façades with rococo interiors around an octagonal courtyard DAY 3: Sweden - Malmo Malmö is a coastal city in southern Sweden. It lies at the eastern end of the striking Öresund Bridge, a long road and railway bridge–tunnel running to Copenhagen, Denmark. In the city center, Lilla Torg is a cobblestone square with cafes, half-timbered houses and shops selling local handicrafts. Malmö Castle, a 16th-century fortress built by King Christian III of Denmark, houses nature, history and art exhibits. DAY 4: Sweden - Gothenburg Gothenburg, a major city in Sweden, is situated off the Göta älv river on the country's west coast. An important seaport, it's known for its Dutch-style canals and leafy boulevards like the Avenyn, the city's main thoroughfare, lined with many cafes and shops. Liseberg is a popular amusement park with themed rides, performance venues and a landscaped sculpture garden. DAY 5: Sweden - Stockholm Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, encompasses 14 islands and more than 50 bridges on an extensive Baltic Sea archipelago. The cobblestone streets and ochre-colored buildings of Gamla Stan (the old town) are home to the 13th-century Storkyrkan Cathedral, the Kungliga Slottet Royal Palace and the Nobel Museum, which focuses on the Nobel Prize.     Social Movements in the Nordic Countries since 1900 89 Natasha Vall links: Natasha Vall rechts: Squatting Movements in Copenhagen and Doing their own Thing Stockholm during the 1970s Squatting Movements in Copenhagen and Stockholm during the 1970s Abstract This article offers a comparative assessment of squatting and urban occupation in two Nordic cities, focussing upon the much profiled example of Christiania in Copenhagen and the lesser moment of squatter agitation in southern Stockholm during the 1970s. Firstly it examines the two cases against a backdrop of crises in the Nordic welfare state, and especially its housing model. Secondly the article places the experience of Chris- tiania and Stockholm within the context of both the 1960s counterculture, as well as the community activism of the 1970s. Finally the comparison of Christiania Free Town in Copenhagen and the quarter Mullvaden in Stockholm emphasises the importance of creative practices to squatting and community activism during the 1970s. This theme has often formed the background of traditional studies of the political struggles mobilised by squats. However, the following discussion reveals that creative activists often played a significant role in forging international networks that carried the ambitions of alternative living beyond their local contexts. During the 1970s grass roots movements emerged in European cities whose protagonists occupied and squatted vacant and forgotten buildings. City spaces in flux, abandoned or awaiting redevelopment by municipal governments distracted by their preoccupa- tion with the newly emerging problem of suburban anomie, were rich pickings for a youth movement that gave expression to a sense of urban dislocation symptomatic of the transition to post-industrial society.

    Low Intermediate Copenhagen and environs, 09 - 15 June (Sat - Fri) Join Brenda for a very special insight into Copenhagen and the surrounding area. This holiday offers a tremendous variety of walks all within easy reach of the extraordinary city of Copenhagen. The walks take us through woods, along sandy beaches and on top of spectacular chalk cliffs with views towards Sweden and the island of Hven, which we will visit by ferry. Denmark is known as a farming country, but ever since the Vikings it has also been a seafaring nation. Nowhere in Denmark is further than 60 kilometers from the coast with its hundreds of bays, inlets, headlands and small islands. On our walks north and south of the capital – and in the capital itself – we will enjoy the peace and quiet of rural Denmark, visiting cosy old fishing villages, the former hunting grounds of kings and the spectacular white cliffs of Stevns. A small ferry will take us to the Swedish island of Hven between Denmark and Sweden. Our walk on Hven will offer beautiful views of the mainland on both sides of the Sound. Our first day will include a guided walking tour around the city to help us explore some of the city’s hidden gems. Our base will be the newly renovated Danhostel Copenhagen next to the harbor and just a few minutes from both the central station and the old part of the city. Transport to and from the walks will be by public transport, mostly by train, and in the evenings, we will explore the lively streets and cosy eateries in central Copenhagen and sample some of the local dishes- and maybe a chilled Carlsberg!     “Environmental Sustainability? We Don’t Have That Here”: Freetown Christiania as an Unintentional Eco-village Amanda K. Winter1 Central European University [email protected] Abstract How did an urban squat come to be termed as an eco-village, and why would this car-free town reject a bicycle path? This article brings pressing urban and environmental issues together through a case study of “Freetown Christiania”, a squatter community located in downtown Copenhagen. With a framework based on Helga Leitner et al. urban neoliberal contestations, I identify Christiania’s alternative socio-spatial imaginaries and practices. Ethnographic field work conducted while living at the community’s researcher house allows for an in-depth exploration of Christiania’s recent history and experiences, and the implications for conventional conceptions of and pathways to sustainability. I show how some of the values and practices found in Christiania differ from the “green” priorities of Copenhagen’s carbon neutral goal. My findings show resistance to the dominant discourse of sustainability, for example through a temporal focus on the present as opposed to the conventional considerations for future generations; and with resistance to Christianshavnruten, a proposed bicycle path that would cut through Christiania.
