Damage to vehicles using Tesco car park in Valley Park.

I had a tyre damaged at the beginning of August by the very large pothole at the entrance to the Tesco car park. I reported this to the store managers and filled in a damage report form which was sent to Tesco customer relations. I have since received numerous very apologetic emails and phone calls but nothing has yet been done to compensate me for the £70 which I had to spend on a new tyre in order to get my car through its MOT.

If anyone else has had a similar experience I would urge them to contact Tesco customer relations as soon as possible as at long last the car park has been rectified.

Mr R Strong "RESPONSE TO PARKING"

The solution is simple and so obvious. The local planning office should not allow any office buildings to be used unless they have a car park with enough spaces for the number of desks they have. Simple. Nothing complicated. Likewise, any flats/apartments being built should only get planning permission if they have car parking bays for all of the persons in the flats.

Another Valley Park Resident LETTERS RELATING TO CHRYSALIS ARTICLES The Valley Park Community Association would like to notify residents that we are unable to print any letters/comments relating to articles in the Chrysalis. The Chrysalis is the domain of St Francis Church and is produced by the church independently from the VP Voice. This notification has come about following feedback to the VPCA from a recent Chrysalis article.

The Rev Peter Hutchinson (St Francis Church) is more than willing to discuss any comments/criticism/disagreements with any resident personally if they would like to contact him through the Church office.

RATS

Below is a reply from the TVBC Pest Control Service following concerns by one Valley Park resident which may be of interest to other residents.

“We are aware of the current issue regarding the increase in rats in Valley Park and have carried out intensive investigations in and around areas which have been reported to the Council and have undertaken treatments where it is safe to do so. These investigations have so far provided little evidence of where the rats are actually harbouring. In order for rats to stay in an area they require food, shelter and water. They will travel quite a distance in order to find a food source which is why they are being seen running along footpaths and gardens. We cannot just place bait boxes all over Valley Park in order to ascertain where the source is due to regulations concerning baiting close to a water source and the possibility of poisoning non-target species which includes domestic pets. Furthermore all boxes which contain poison has to be clearly marked which can then make them a target for tampering which again could endanger not only domestic pets but also the public.

To date we have carried out 8 hours of investigation in Valley Park and also undertaken a leaflet drop to residents on how to prevent a possible rodent infestation in the gardens and homes in the areas where the highest number of sightings has been. We are about to commence Phase 1 of test baiting in those areas also. Test baiting is the placing of non-toxic blocks into locked plastic bait boxes which, if tampered with, is harmless. These boxes are then inspected approx. 14 days later and if any rat or mouse droppings are found in the box then we will commence treatment using rodenticides in areas where they can be safely placed.

If this testing reveals no evidence of rodents we will then move to Phase 2 which will cover further areas of Valley Park.

As you can see, we are continuing to try to resolve the current issue within Valley Park. In addition to the above, one of my Pest Control Officers will be undertaking a joint visit with an Council Pest Control Officer onWednesday (8th October) to ascertain whether the source is in fact on EBC land rather than TVBC.

I hope that the above answers your concerns.”

Yours sincerely Penny Nicholas, Senior Business Support Officer Housing & Environmental Health

5 LETTERS ETC.

LIVING IN VALLEY PARK Ref: Letter “Valley Park; best place to live.” Valley Park is the latest of estates we have lived on, this one for 10 years now. This one sadly has suffered the same fate as all as all the others. The pressures for housing in the first place and the greed of builders to maximise profit leave very little room for change by enlargement of house size.

However infilling and removal by adaption of garage facilities goes on distorting the original designs of the houses; because residents see a cost benefit of doing so rather than move. Invariably they do move eventually anyway leaving the estate ugly and distorted, always expecting their “improvements” to have added value of course.

Added to this the planners do not allow enough parking of residents cars because this reduces profit. So over time we have now on average one resident, one car. Where do they put them? Why of course right by the house, by digging up grass areas which had softened the look of the original estate, imposing bleak block paving forecourt, again distorting the original design and reducing soak away areas for rainfall. Let no one be surprised at future flooding because of climate change.

Some residents in the more favoured parts of Valley Park may still feel immune from these distortions, while others are living in a car park. Even at night a “van city”. These things come about because of pressures on our society and the need to travel to work. The estate suffers from poor bus services, compared to say . Even though we are all in and similar subsidies should apply. Sorry to sound negative but that’s the way we feel. Looking into the next decade we will have noisy pilotless drones dropping “home shopping” into our back gardens from the air, so we have seen nothing yet. I suppose we will get use to these changes and sadly we will have no” voice” but on this letter page. Observer of estate developments Name & address supplied .

The Community Association hope that you support the advertisers in the Voice, but it cannot be responsible for the quality of work or the service given by the advertisers.

It is always a matter between the two parties concerned. 6 ON THE INTERNET

LOOKING AT THE PAST This year much attention has been devoted to the events of 100 years ago particularly to World War One.

If you are also interested in geography and landscapes of times past then a new online service could help.

Detailed Ordnance Survey maps that offer a glimpse into how areas looked are now available online from the National Library of Scotland (NLS) website. This is as a result of a programme that has digitised historic maps across the UK. The maps covering the whole country were surveyed twice covering periods from 1842 – 1893 and 1891 – 1914. Since then the 1914 maps have been updated to cover the changes up to the 1940’s.

They can be searched in a number of different ways, place names, street names, postcodes or grid references. The website address is maps.nls.uk/os/6inch_england_and_wales.

See how an area that you lived in or know has changed over time to how it has become the place it is today.

VPCA ON THE INTERNET http://valleyparkcommunitycentre.wordpress.com

It is now possible to obtain some general information about the Community Centre and also view a copy of the Valley Park Voice. Some residents have friends or family who live outside of our area and may wish to catch up with what is happening in Valley Park. Previous copies of the VP Voice will also be available to view.

Booking forms are available to download but to find out availability it is necessary to contact the community centre office either in person or by telephone.

This new arrangement is not intended, nor do we wish it to, replace the personal contact but to enhance the service to the community.

14 AUTUMN AWARENESS FROM YOUR VET

The shorter, cooler days herald the onset of autumn and as we mourn the loss of another summer – here are some tips to keep your pet safe and disease free at this time of the year

Autumn is a busy time for parasites! Fleas are still very much a problem, so keep up to date with anti- parasitic treatments. Autumn is also the peak time for ticks! Ticks live in long grass and woodland areas and attach themselves to passing pets. Grooming your dog after a walk enables you to remove them before they attach. At the same time you can check for grass seeds stuck in the coat which can otherwise penetrate the skin and work their way in, causing pain and infection.

Harvest mites are another problem seen in the late summer and autumn months. The mites live in long grass and swarm onto passing pets, where they typically congregate on the face, ears and feet. They appear as bright orange dots and are usually a cause of great irritation.

There are risks in the garden too – don’t let your pets have access to fallen fruits, acorns or conkers, as these can all cause digestive upsets. Also try to stop your dog eating slugs and snails in the garden, since these can spread the lungworm Angiostrongylus vasorum.

PleIt is always advisable to keep pets indoors on firework night and this is especially important for those pets that are phobic about noise. These pets may benefit from medication to reduce anxiety. Habituation to loud noises over a long period of time can also be helpful. Please contact us if you would like to discuss these options in further detail. Please contact us if you would like a worming and flea control regime for your pet.

Autumn aches: Finally bear in mind that the cooler weather may unmask arthritic disease and joint stiffness, so keep an eye on your pet’s mobility and comfort. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on your pet’s weight, since it’s all too easy for pets to gain a few extra pounds during the autumn and winter months. If you are at all concerned, please book your pet in for a check up.
