CLARK INTRODUCTION Volcanic episodes have occurred periodically throughout the history of the Grand Canyon (e.g. Garber, this volume; Bennett, this volume). During certain phases of the tectonic evolution of the Grand Canyon, uplift of the Colorado Plateau lead to an extensional tectonic environment that thinned the Earth’s crust facilitating transport of magmatic material to the Earth’s surface, often along fault zones that acted as conduits for the basaltic magma generated in the mantle below (see Bennett, this volume for discussion of regional tectonics). There are three volcanic fields on the western Grand Canyon: the Grand Wash, Shivwits Plateau, and UinKaret Plateau, from west to east, respectively. The youngest of these, the UinKaret Plateau, was active during the Pleistocene (Crow et al., 2008; Dalrymple and Hamblin, 1998; Hamblin, 1994). -

Flood Deposits, Western Grand Canyon, Arizona
Geochemical Discrimination of Five Pleistocene Lava-Dam Outburst- Flood Deposits, Western Grand Canyon, Arizona Cassandra R. Fenton, Robert J. Poreda,1 Barbara P. Nash,2 Robert H. Webb, and Thure E. (e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT Pleistocene basaltic lava dams and outburst-flood deposits in the western Grand Canyon, Arizona, have been correlated 3 3 by means of cosmogenic He ( Hec) ages and concentrations of SiO2,Na2O, K2O, and rare earth elements. These data indicate that basalt clasts and vitroclasts in a given outburst-flood deposit came from a common source, a lava dam. With these data, it is possible to distinguish individual dam-flood events and improve our understanding of the interrelations of volcanism and river processes. At least five lava dams on the Colorado River failed catastrophically between 100 and 525 ka; subsequent outburst floods emplaced basalt-rich deposits preserved on benches as high as 200 m above the current river and up to 53 km downstream of dam sites. Chemical data also distinguishes individual lava flows that were collectively mapped in the past as large long-lasting dam complexes. These chemical data, in combination with age constraints, increase our ability to correlate lava dams and outburst-flood deposits and increase our understanding of the longevity of lava dams. Bases of correlated lava dams and flood deposits approximate the elevation of the ancestral river during each flood event. Water surface profiles are reconstructed and can be used in future hydraulic models to estimate the magnitude of these large-scale floods. -

National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Grand Canyon Grand Canyon National Park Arizona The view from Toroweap Point is dramatically different, perhaps even confusing, to those familiar with the Geology of the Grand Canyon's heavily visited North and South Rim viewpoints. Instead of an almost bewildering mass of Tuweep Area temples and buttes, the Grand Canyon here is an abrupt gorge set in a broad corridor. Lava flows and conical black cinder cones stud the landscape. Given these differences, it is surprising to learn that the geological history of the Tuweep area is essentially the same as the eastern portions of the park, but carried further. Below Toroweap Point, the Colorado River has not yet cut into the Canyon's oldest rocks. They disappear 43 miles upstream at the foot of the Middle Granite Gorge, and do not reappear for another 11 miles downstream. However, the Layered Paleozoic rocks that compose the temples of the eastern Canyon are here at Tuweep. From 525 million years ago until 270 million years ago, the forerunner of today's Pacific Ocean alternately advanced and retreated from northwestern Arizona. Low-lying landscapes dominated: deltas, lagoons, swamps, shoals, and shallow seas. Since the seas advanced from the west, the Tuweep area was more likely to be under these seas. Thicker layers of marine limestone formed here, while coastal mud and sand were deposited to the east. As a result, limestone cliffs dominate the Canyon walls near Tuweep, replacing many of the terraces seen in the east. The major exception to this pattern lies in the deep red mudstones of the Hermit Shale. -
