Media Corner 32 Let’s Talk ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE – THE NEW KID IN THE ACADEMIC BLOCK If the twentieth century belonged to scientific innovations, the twenty-first century well and truly belongs to technology. If we take a close look at the technological developments that have changed our lives over the past couple of decades, we would be able to comprehend that the pace has been phenomenal. From the rapid transformations in the telecom industry to the conversion of internet to a daily necessity, technology has had an irreversible impact on our daily lives. One of the primary fields that have been directly impacted by these developments happens to be the education sector. There has been a paradigm shift in how education is delivered over the past half a decade or so. From smart classrooms to e-learning, the transition has impacted students and teachers alike. In the face of it all, another concept seems to have catapulted popular imagination. Artificial Intelligence or AI, as it is more popularly known, has been dominating multiple academic discourses. Billed to be the biggest development in technology, the nascent development can truly propel education to the next logical level. As we make a shift towards Industry 4.0, it is worth a try to understand the impact of AI on future educational deliveries. The same could be elucidated in the form of pointers for our easier understanding: 1.A Personalized Learning Process: We all have seen how the OTT platforms create personalized content recommendations for viewers. The same thing could be done in education as well using AI. Let us understand it this way. All these while, the students had to gulp down everything that was being shoved down their throat without a clear understanding of what they were good at. Thanks to AI, learning could be customized for individual students so that their strength areas can be tapped. At the end of the day, the idea is to create a skilled workforce, which is ready to take up responsibilities in any given field. 2.A Global Orientation to the Learning Process: Education, by default, needs to compulsorily have a global orientation. However, subject to the constraints of the existing educational delivery structure, the same was not a viable proposition always. Thanks to AI, imparting a global perspective to education wouldn’t be too much of a hassle. The availability of online education would ensure that the repertoire of choices available for a student is much more than what it currently is. 3.Academic Content Would Become Smart: Virtual educational content in the form of video lectures, smart textbooks, e-books and the likes have practically transformed the educational sector. Gone are the days when the students had to patiently wait for their desired books in order to get a grasp over their chosen subjects. Thanks to AI and the current digital revolution, content of any form and hue is available at the click of a button. In fact, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to note that the advent of AI and digital technologies have democratized the educational delivery process and made it more affordable for people from across the spectrum. 1 4.Administrative Simplification: As teachers and academicians, we all know that administrative hassles sometimes restrict our time to garner new knowledge. Thanks to AI, most of the administrative tasks that the teachers had to do all these while could be done by the smart machines. The usage of digital resources has also simplified the process of archiving thereby saving a significant amount of time. When we look at the pointers mentioned above and many more, it becomes more than obvious that AI is here to stay, at least in the educational sector. The educational community needs to embrace it or become redundant in the eventual equation. Have a great read!
