Studies in the History of Gardens & Designed Landscapes addresses itself to readers with a serious interest in the subject, and is now established as the main place in which to publish scholarly work on garden history. While the journal’s main emphasis is on documentation of individual gardens in all parts of the world, articles on other topics - iconography, aesthetics, and , technology, social and economic history, conservation and restoration of historic gardens, geography, history of ideas - are welcomed. From time to time issues are centered around themes, for example, the Anglo- Dutch garden in the age of William and Mary, eighteenth-century gardens of the Chesapeake, and gardens of the Ancient Mediterranean, and rediscovering the British garden. Teaching responsibilities may include graduate level studios and technical courses as well as opportunities for developing courses in the candidate’s area of interest. Candidates should have a professional degree in landscape architecture or a related field and proven ability in research or creative practice.

The University of Virginia offers a graduate degree in landscape architecture (M.L.A.), as well as an undergraduate minor open to all students in the University. Landscape Architecture is one of four departments in the School of Architecture. The School is distinguished by a unique interdisciplinary culture--strong ties exist with the other disciplines of Architecture, Architectural History and Urban and Environmental Planning. Dual masters degree programs are established with all three disciplines. There are many opportunities for cross-disciplinary teaching and research. The department has a strong design focus, emphasizing both conceptual investigation-- grounded in the study of history and theory--and physical making and building, supported by the ecology and techno!ogy curriculum. The technology and studio sequences are closely integrated.

The University of Minnesota invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track assistant professor, tenured associate professor or tenured full professor position in the Department of Landscape Architecture of the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. The Department’s degree programs and faculty research strive to integrate an artistic understanding of landscape architectural design with an ecological knowledge of natural and cultural systems. We seek a scholar or a practitioner whose work is well informed by natural phenomena, ecology and technology and who has a passion for teaching. The successful applicant will possess some combination of teaching skills and research/practice experience that will enable her/him to impart the knowledge and skills necessary to engage successfully in the practice of landscape architecture in the 21st century as well as to expand the knowledge and skill base of the profession.

This appointment is for a full-time, 9-month position. The Department is positioned to allow the candidate to engage in the numerous applied research, outreach and practice opportunities available in Minnesota. There is an option of a 25% annually renewable leave without pay to pursue creative professional work for the appointment. In addition, summer augmentation money will be available to support the appointee’s scholarly endeavors. Qualifications Required: 1) Professional M.L.A. degree or B.L.A. with an advanced degree or M.S.L.A.; 2) teaching experience in a landscape architecture program; and 3) scholarly inquiry or professional practice that demonstrates promise for excellence in the integration of the science of ecology with the art of landscape architectural design. Candidates holding the Ph.D. who are focused on ecologically based design are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates’ accomplishments will be judged with consideration to their years of experience in teaching or practice.

The Department of Landscape Architecture is located on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
