A: It was insane. I came out for the week of Big Blue Madness. It was somebody in Big Blue

Kentucky Basketball’s Kentucky Madness who said ‘We’re going to get Mar- cus Lee to 5,000 before he comes here.’ I thought, ‘Whatever, no one’s going to listen to you.’ And they started coming in while I’m in school. My phone was like ‘zzz, zzz, zzz,’ and I was like ‘What is happening in my phone?’ And it switched up to 5,000 really quick. I was thinking ‘What just happened?’ It was really awesome. JAMES YOUNG Guard/Forward • 6-6 • 215 • Freshman

Q: You chose Kentucky over some pretty tough competition, like Michigan State, Syracuse and Kansas. What lifted the Wildcats to the top of your list? A: Once I came here, it was like a dream come true. It was always my dream school growing up. I fell in love with the place. Loved the cam- pus, great facility, great coaching staff. Once they gave me the opportunity to come here, I just took it. AARON HARRISON Guard • 6-6 • 218 • Freshman ROAD TO THE FINAL FOUR 2013-14 Q: How important has the influence of your father been to you and your brother, not only in teaching you bas- ketball but in guiding you through the fame and celebrity you’ve found at an

Kentucky Basketball’s Kentucky early age? A: I definitely wouldn’t be the basketball player I am now. I probably would be in a lot more trouble just because he always taught me how to be a man, really. Everything I do I got from him. JARROD POLSON Guard • 6-2 • 182 • Senior

Q: Along with Jon Hood, you are the old- est player on the team. How much responsibility does that bring to the table and how are you dealing with it? A: I don’t think age has that much to do with it, especially with these teams because there are so many freshmen that can be leaders, but I think me and Jon will probably lead by example more than anything. I’m just working hard in practice every day because we’ve been through the ups and downs of a really good season and a really bad season right after that, so we know what to expect. JON HOOD Guard • 6-7 • 215 • Senior ROAD TO THE FINAL FOUR 2013-14 Q: You’re the only player who’s been with Coach Cal from the start. What kind of relationship have you built over the years? A: I’ve built a good relationship. Everybody talks

Kentucky Basketball’s Kentucky about their coach being a father figure to them. Same thing for me — father figure, mentor, he will always be there for me when- ever I need it. ANDREW HARRISON Guard • 6-6 • 215 • Freshman

Q: Several Wildcats have been drafted into the NBA after one year with Coach Cal. How much did that factor into your decision to come here? A: None really. Everybody knows Coach has a great track record. But, I mean, just coming to Kentucky, there’s a great tradition. There’s no other place like it. SAM MALONE Guard • 5-11 • 185 • Junior ROAD TO THE FINAL FOUR 2013-14 Q: How do you see your role on the team evolving now that you’re a junior? A: Leading these guys on and off the court. By bringing intensity in practice, picking guys up when they need it, and off the court, steering

Kentucky Basketball’s Kentucky them in the right direction. WILLIE CAULEY-STEIN Forward • 7-0 • 244 • Sophomore

Q: What motivates you as a basketball player and what do you ultimately hope to accomplish when you’re no longer playing? A: My family motivates me. I don’t want to have to work a 9-5 job. I want to be my own boss and I just want to be able to provide my family with everything I didn’t get. TOD LANTER Guard • 6-2 • 190 • Junior ROAD TO THE FINAL FOUR 2013-14 Q: Last year was your first playing for Kentucky after walking on. What was that experience like and what were you looking forward to this season? A: It wasn’t real until I saw my name on the jersey,

Kentucky Basketball’s Kentucky which felt great ... Coming into this season it’s the same thing — do what’s expected of me, give 100 percent, work hard, push everybody else in here. That’s not just my role either, that’s everybody’s role — make each and every other player in here the best version of them- selves, as Cal would say. If we can do that, the possibilities for this team are limitless. ALEX POYTHRESS Forward • 6-8 • 239 • Sophomore

Q: As one of the top returning starters from last season, what has your role been on this year’s team? A: Just try to step up and be a leader, try to be more vocal this year. Last year we didn’t have many veteran leaders. This year we should have a couple with me and Willie returning, and you’ve still got Jarrod and Hood here, so we should be good this year. EJ FLOREAL Guard • 6-3 • 195 • Freshman ROAD TO THE FINAL FOUR 2013-14 Q: You could have played on scholarship elsewhere. Why walk on at UK? A: For my goals, which would be to get better and be the best player, and ultimately, like every kid wants to, play professionally. If

Kentucky Basketball’s Kentucky that’s overseas or in the NBA, I think I had to come here. Even if that means I have to play behind a bunch of great players, that’s what I’ll do. I’d rather learn from them than go somewhere else and play, but not necessar- ily get better. DOMINIQUE HAWKINS Guard • 6-0 • 193 • Freshman

Q: What does it mean to you, as the reigning Kentucky Mr. Basketball, to put on the UK uniform? A: It’s a blessing to put on a UK jersey this year. It’s like a dream still to me. When I saw my jersey for the first time, I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ It’s just amazing to be able to put that jersey on and represent Kentucky. JULIUS RANDLE Forward • 6-9 • 250 • Freshman ROAD TO THE FINAL FOUR 2013-14 Q: What were the deciding factors that led you to attend UK? A: At the end of the day, it was just the best place for me. I didn’t want to go anywhere else. I just felt like the coaches and the style

Kentucky Basketball’s Kentucky fit me the best, and it’s a place where I could go and become the best player I could be and have the best chance to win a national championship. That was what was most important to me. BRIAN LONG Guard • 5-9 • 155 • Junior

Q: What is that mindset you must have to be fully committed to the team knowing that your playing time would be limited? A: You have to do everything you can to help the team, whether it’s on the court, off the court, academics — just pretty much be there and be a part of everything to make sure you can do your best to help the team on and off the court. DEREK WILLIS Forward • 6-9 • 205 • Freshman ROAD TO THE FINAL FOUR 2013-14 Q: You grew up a Louisville fan. Was it difficult to overcome this when you were considering colleges and Ken- tucky entered the picture? A: I did grow up a Louisville fan. I was pro-

Kentucky Basketball’s Kentucky Louisville over Kentucky. It wasn’t a thing where we were so die-hard Louisville. We rooted for other teams in the Commonwealth — WKU, anyone who won, we were like, ‘OK, good.’ Kentucky was just the better decision for me and I wanted the challenge of coming here and going against potential NBA play- ers. I just felt like I couldn’t pass that up. DAKARI JOHNSON Center • 7-0 • 265 • Freshman

Q: As more of a true center, you break the mold a little bit as far as big men that Coach Cal has utilized recently. How is your game different from guys like Nerlens Noel and Anthony Davis? A: I think I play more in the paint because I try to take advantage of my matchups. I really don’t like to go outside the paint, you know, why not, if you have an advantage inside? I like sticking in the paint a little bit.
