SEARCHING BATTLE CREEK HISTORIC NEWSPAPERS SAVING/EMAILING/CLIPPING NEWSPAPER ARTICLES USC SHOAH FOUNDATION LIBERATOR TESTIMONY

Leon Bass Bernard Bermack Howard Cwick James Hayes

Kurt Klein Barton Nagata Paul Parks James Zuidema

Focus on the words of one liberator whose story you found especially memorable. What does this testimony teach us about the importance of human action, human rights and the human spirit? PART V - BUILDING THE BLOCKS OF A MEANINGFUL & PURPOSEFUL LIFE FROM THE UGLINESS & CONFLICT OF HUMANITY

Activity 1: Brainstorm as a class or in small groups the blocks needed to rebuild a meaningful and purposeful life for the following kinds of people: An American soldier in WWII; A Holocaust survivor; The Family of a Holocaust victim; A Holocaust rescuer; Bystanders of war.

Activity 2: Brainstorm individually the blocks that you will need to build a meaningful & purposeful life.

Activity 3: Compare the blocks from Activity 1 and Activity 2. Find at least three that are in both - ones that YOU share with victims and participants in war.

Activity 4: Watch the following interview with Gerda Weissmann Klein.

Activity 5: Now, using at least one of those shared blocks, you will write an article, letter, poem, etc. to be published in the Battle Creek Enquirer. You should explain the importance of the block and how all of us working together can help build that block stronger for the community. Our hopes are that when students are searching the Battle Creek Enquirer Archives 50 years from now, they will find your writing and know that the people of Battle Creek were aware and doing something about the challenges of our world today.
