Life in the Treetops—An Overview of Forest Canopy Science and Its Future Directions

Email: [email protected] recent findings confirm trees are critical for the health of humans as well as for the entire planet. Advances in whole forest research, which includes the upper reaches and not just the forest floor, are providing critical information about carbon storage, biodiversity, water cycles, and other essential ecosystem services provided by trees. The methods to study forest canopies are relatively new and vastly underfunded, despite our growing recognition of the global importance of trees. In addition to ad- vancing exploration of the treetops, the forest canopy toolkit is also proving instru- mental to jumpstart innovative actions to conserve forest ecosystems. Summary Forest canopies are home to an estimated 50% of terrestrial biodiversity but remain relatively unexplored until just four decades ago. As one of the first global arbor- nauts, I share an abbreviated history of canopy science, and how treetop access has inspired forest conservation, especially in the tropics where forests remain relatively unexplored. The arboreal toolkit of ropes and harnesses, canopy walkways, dirigible and inflatable rafts, construction cranes, drones, and LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) has revealed that forests provide many important ecosystem services, es- sential for life on earth. Yet despite millions of research dollars, extensive time, and extraordinary intellectual capital, the degradation of tropical rain forests is acceler- ating and does not correlate with the extent of scientific investments. -

E-mail: Abstract: The Rondônia Natural Resources Management Project (PLANAFLORO) was a strategic program developed in partnership between the Brazilian Government and The World Bank in 1992, with the purpose of stimulating the sustainable development and protection of the Amazon in the state of Rondônia. More than a decade after the PLANAFORO program concluded, the aim of the present work is to recover and share the information from the long-abandoned plant collections made during the project’s ecological-economic zoning phase. Most of the material analyzed was sterile, but the fertile voucher specimens recovered are listed here. The material examined represents 378 species in 234 genera and 76 families of angiosperms. Some 8 genera, 68 species, 3 subspecies and 1 variety are new records for Rondônia State. It is our intention that this information will stimulate future studies and contribute to a better understanding and more effective conservation of the plant diversity in the southwestern Amazon of Brazil. Nadkarni The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA 98505, USA (e-mail: [email protected]) Key words: Conservation, Forest Canopy, Graduate Study, Rain forests Abstract Study of the forest canopy has reached a critical stage in its development from a young 'frontier' area of study to a vibrant and coalescing field of investigation and communication. Many current environmental and social issues at global scales (e.g., environmental change, acid deposition, loss of biodiversity) are related directly to our knowledge of forest canopies. I present six activities that are needed to help the vibrant and growing field of forest canopy studies progress efficiently. Enabling canopy researchers to communicate with each other and with those outside our field is an important element to address these issues. The establishment of a graduate-level training program is also a high priority to generate and maintain a healthy discipline. Formal procedures to identify particular forest sites of critical concern should be initiated, and these should include communication of prioritized sites to conservation groups and policy makers. Instilling a sense of wonder and appreciation for organisms and interactions in non-scientists is another important avenue for forest canopy conservation. Digital Photo Monitoring FOR TREE CROWN FOLIAGE CHANGE Evaluation Neil Clark and Sang-Mook Lee1 Abstract—ssessing change in the amount of foliage within a tree’s crown is the goal of crown transparency estimation, a component in many forest health assessment programs. Many sources of variability limit analysis and interpretation of crown condition data. Increased precision is needed to detect more subtle changes that are important for detection of health problems. Digital photomonitoring can be used to increase the precision of these measures provided exact camera parameter replication is performed and movement of canopy structures is not severe. Two measures of transparency (compactness and DSO, or fractal dimension of silhouettes minus fractal dimension of outlines) show sensitivity to small branches or small canopy gaps, but may offer some unique descriptive information over area ratio measures. Point-wise and region-wise transparency distribution maps provide easy to interpret visual representations of localized transparency. INTRODUCTION Visual inspection is often the first step in evaluating the health of an organism. Farmers visually inspect their plant crops on a regular basis to determine when to water, fertilize, or treat an insect or disease outbreak. Likewise, visual inspection is often a key indicator of tree health. National and international forest health monitoring programs (Huettl 1993) such as the Environmental Monitoring and ssessment Program (EMP) (Tallent-Halsell 1994), which is now Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) (Mangold 1998), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) (Ferretti 1997) collect tree crown indicators to assess forest health. Though many variables have been proposed for tree health assessment (Innes 1993), many of these have been dropped from national assessment programs for various reasons-cost, lack of applicability over wide regions, species-specificity, etc. -
