Categories considered by the selection committee include: • Science and Engineering • Business and Industry • Military Achievement • Fine Arts and Entertainment • Community Service • Education • Politics and Government • Philanthropic Endeavors In addition, each year the Distinguished Staff Hall of Fame Committee selects two Distinguished Staff members for induction to the Hall of Fame and bestows an honorary Alumni membership on each inductee. Nominees will alternate annually among retired teachers, support staff, administrators, Board of Education members and community volunteers. Student Presenters Remarks .................................................................Mike Sheppard Superintendent Distinguished Staff Honorary Alumnus of Berea and Midpark High Schools Dolores Astor Presented by Rebecca Spangler • Undergraduate degree in Teaching from Kent State University in the early 1960s and graduate work in Reading from Kent State University in the early 1970s. • Taught 2nd grade in the Cleveland Public Schools for four years. • Was hired by Berea City Schools to teach reading at St. Bartholomew Academy for one year. • Taught 3rd and 4th grades at C.A. Thomas Elementary School with reading in the afternoon for grades 1-4. • Taught 2nd grade at Evangeline Davies Elementary School for four years. • Became a reading teacher for Berea High School after developing the curriculum. • Taught 1st grade for one year and then 2nd grade for several years at Brookview Elementary School. Was also a Mentor and Consulting Teacher at Brookview. • Retired after 30 years of teaching. • After retiring, tutored and prepared 3rd-grade students for state tests at Brookview Elementary School. • Have spent several years assisting Mrs. Smearman at Brookview Elementary in second grade. • Mother of two children. Distinguished Alumnus Berea High School Class of 1975 Donald Jaworske Presented by Alexander Fausnaugh • Retired after 32 years with NASA Glenn Research Center. • Integration Manager for Materials International Space Station Experiments (MISSE) 1 through 7, managing the clean room integration and de-integration of flight experiments, 1999-2009. • Project Manager for MISSE Science, managing budgets and ensuring that science results were published, 2008-2011. • Project Scientist for MISSE-X, preparing a call for proposals and producing an outreach video, 2011-2013. • Zero-G aircraft research, designing and managing an experiment to measure thermosyphon performance in simulated lunar and Martian gravity, 2009-2011. • Managed the peer review process for proposals submitted to the Small Business Innovative Research Program, 2010-2015. • Ion thruster plume diagnostics research for the Electric Propulsion Program, 1998-2000. • Alignment and Initial Operation of an Advanced Solar Simulator, 1994-1996. • Solar dynamic concentrator optical efficiency and molten salt thermal energy storage research for Solar Dynamic Power Systems, 1988-2000. • Author of Patent for a High Temperature Solar Reflector. • Mentor for the NASA Plus High School Program, Lewis’ Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Project, and the NASA Glenn Faculty Fellowship Program, Mentor-of-the-Year in 2003. • Recipient of two Space Flight Awareness Awards and a Silver Snoopy Award for the work on the Materials International Space Station Experiment. • Graduate of the Engineer/Scientist as Manager Program at the University of Tennessee. • Graduate of the Nonprofit Management Intensive Track Program at Duke University. • Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, currently serving on the AIAA Materials Technical Committee. • Chair of the Cleveland Section of the American Chemical Society, 2013. • Crawford Auto Aviation Museum of the Western Reserve Historical Society Volunteer. • Ph.D. in Chemistry, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, 1983. • B.S. in Chemistry, Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio, 1979. Robert Taft. Jr., 1973 • Began debate over maneuver warfare in the U.S. military with an article for Military Review, 1977. • Joined the staff of U.S. Sen. Gary Hart of Colorado, 1977. • Played major role in founding the Military Reform Movement, late 1970s. • Published the Maneuver Warfare Handbook, which is still in print including in at least six other languages, 1985. • Co-authored with Senator Hart “America Can Win: The Case for Military Reform,” 1986. • Played major role in U.S. Marine Corps’ adoption of maneuver warfare doctrine; served as special advisor to Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Alfred M. Gray; wrote Marine Corps’ basic tactics manual FMFM 1-3. • Joined Free Congress Foundation; co-authored two books on cultural conservatism; served as host of two television programs, Next Revolution and Modern War, 1986. • Served for six years as Associate Publisher of The New Electric Railway Journal. • Published two books co-authored with Paul Weyrich, “The Next Conservatism” and “Moving Minds: Conservatives and Public Transportation”, 2009. • Retired from Free Congress Foundation, 2012. • Since retirement has published four new books, including a novel, “Victoria,” and the Fourth Generation Warfare Handbook; columnist with The American Conservative magazine and traditionalright.com website; consultant to the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy Special Warfare.
