Based on acoustic diagnostic characters, a seventh species Cicadetta cantilatrix sp. nov. belonging to the complex is described. The type- locality is in France but the species distribution area extends to Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Mace- donia and Montenegro. The calling song sequence consists of two phrases with different echemes. This calling pattern clearly differs from those produced by all other members of the complex, including C. cerdaniensis, previously mistaken with the new species. This description increases the acoustic diversity observed within a single cicada genus and sup- ports the hypothesis that sound communication may play a central role in speciation. Various species do not differ in their morphology, but drastically in their behaviour. Such sibling, or cryptic, species are particularly evident in insects that produce sound to communicate: they look similar but sing differently. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Acoustic investigations of Cicadetta montana s. l. have revealed the presence of morphologically cryptic species in the last few years. This work describes the new cicada Cicadetta anapaistica sp. n. which was detected in the Madonie and Nebrodi Mountains (Italy, Sicily). The characteristic and sophisticated song is composed of three phrases, modulated on four typical power levels and three frequency ranges. The song pattern is compared with those of the closely related Ci- cadetta cerdaniensis and Cicadetta cantilatrix. Quantitative and even qualitative intraspecific differences of the song structure among individuals exist which appear to allow individual-specific recognition in many cases. As in other species of the complex, reliable morphological differences between the new species and others in the complex have not been found. The species is currently only known to be endemic to forest and ecotone habitats in a small mountain range. Be- cause of this limited distribution the species is likely to be vulnerable to habitat and climate changes. An Appraisal of the Higher Classification of Cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadoidea) with Special Reference to the Australian Fauna

ISSN 0067-1975 An Appraisal of the Higher Classification of Cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadoidea) with Special Reference to the Australian Fauna M.S. The history of cicada family classification is reviewed and the current status of all previously proposed families and subfamilies summarized. All tribal rankings associated with the Australian fauna are similarly documented. A cladistic analysis of generic relationships has been used to test the validity of currently held views on family and subfamily groupings. The analysis has been based upon an exhaustive study of nymphal and adult morphology, including both external and internal adult structures, and the first comparative study of male and female internal reproductive systems is included. Only two families are justified, the Tettigarctidae and Cicadidae. The latter are here considered to comprise three subfamilies, the Cicadinae, Cicadettinae n.stat. (= Tibicininae auct.) and the Tettigadinae (encompassing the Tibicinini, Platypediidae and Tettigadidae). Of particular note is the transfer of Tibicina Amyot, the type genus of the subfamily Tibicininae, to the subfamily Tettigadinae. The subfamily Plautillinae (containing only the genus Plautilla) is now placed at tribal rank within the Cicadinae. The subtribe Ydiellaria is raised to tribal rank. The American genus Magicicada Davis, previously of the tribe Tibicinini, now falls within the Taphurini. Three new tribes are recognized within the Australian fauna, the Tamasini n.tribe to accommodate Tamasa Distant and Parnkalla Distant, Jassopsaltriini n.tribe to accommodate Jassopsaltria Ashton and Burbungini n.tribe to accommodate Burbunga Distant. -

Variation within populations of conspecifics appears to be greater in temporal than in spectral properties. Conspecific calls recorded at widely separated localities have essentially the sarne characteristics. Details of behaviour during singing are also noted. Cicada calling songs are very useful in the identification of species in the field. Die strukturele karakters van die roepstemme van 12 sonbesiespesies word uitgebeeld en beskryf. McGregor, of Rockdale, presented to the Trustees, a green male of Cyclochile atLstmlasiOJ, Don, (" Green Monday"), and a female of the "Double-drummer," Thopha saccata, Amyot, which he had taken in cop. last summer, when collecting around Sydney. Numerous instances of insects of distinct species and genera taken in the act of coition, have, from time to time been recorded in the Old World, but this appears to be the first instance of the kind reported from Australia. Mr. McGregor informs me that w ben bis attention was attracted to these insects, he at first thought he had discovered an unusually large Cicada, and it was not until he had captured them, that he discovered he had secured two Cicadas of distinct genera in the act of coition. These when taken were placed in the cyanide bottle. When captured the female was suspended to a branch, which she had firmly grasped with her legs, whilst the male was hanging head downwards, but grasping his partner round her abdomen. -

Fascicule 59 (2) Aflevering 59 (2) CICADIDAE (HEMIPTERA HOMOPTERA AUCHENORRHYNCHA) (') BY Jiri DLABOLA (Praha) INTRODUCTION This is a continuation of my previous research work in the family Cicadidae, based partly upon the material belonging to the « Institut des Parcs Nationaux du Congo Belge, Bruxelles >>, partly on the material of the « Musée Royal du Congo Belge, Tervueren ». Taxonomy in Ethiopian Cicadas worked out already by Karsch, 1890, who keyed, described ancl partly made drawings of a number of the species from that continent, but when studying this classical literature we see that we can détermine comparatively easily some Cicadinne only, but not so many Tibiceninae, where even the séparation of genera is rather difficult. In this subfamily we cannot make any détermination at ail without seeing the type-specimens, excepting only some well marked or monotypic genera. But these déterminations on the basis of the available literature, even willi the help of the original descriptions, are rather problematical. Also the fact of the great dispersion of types in the European museums not accessible for everyone's study, forms the big generally known obstacle in cicadological taxonomie work. There remains here another question, i.e. whether the comparison of types can be satisfactory in every case, e.g. in such a genus as Trismarcha aso., where different sexes have served in single specimens t1) Second contribution to the Knowledge of the Cidadidae from the Belgian Congo. -
