N.C. Central Women’s Basketball The Eagles return home after dropping three consecutive road games at Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore and North Carolina A&T State University. NCCU (5-15 Overall, 3-4 MEAC) is 4-3 at home. Junior guard Rodneysha Martin leads the maroon and gray with 13.3 points and 2.1 assists per game. She is the league’s top free throw shooter at 84.9-percent. Sophomore forward Paulina Afriyie and freshman guard Kieche White are NCCU’s next top two scorers averaging 9.2 and 8.0 points per game, respectively. Afriyie leads the Eagles with 7.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game and she is one of the league’s top shooters at 46.1-percent. White tops NCCU with 1.6 made 3-pointers per game and her 41.6-percent precision from behind the arc ranks second in the conference. They are both averaging 12.7 points per game through seven MEAC contests. NCCU rallied from a 21-point deficit in the second half and defeated Delaware State, 74-67, on Jan. 3 in Dover. Afriyie had a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds while White made five 3-pointers on the way to 20 points. Delaware State Women’s Basketball The Hornets have won three of their last seven games since playing NCCU and are coming off victories against Morgan State University and Savannah State University. Delaware State (4-17 Overall, 3-5 MEAC) is 1-11 in road games. Junior forward NaJai Pollard is the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year and she is averaging 18.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 1.7 steals per game. Pollard missed six games earlier in the season, but would be listed as the league’s top scorer if she had played enough games. She returned back to the Hornets lineup against the Eagles on Jan. 3 and has since averaged 19.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game in league play. Junior guard A’Nikeyawna “Keke” Barber is the reigning MEAC Player of the Week after scoring a career- high 34 points in last week’s victory over the Lady Tigers. She is averaging 8.2 points per game. Sophomore guard Lanayjha Ashe is bucketing 10.7 points per game and leads DSU with 3.2 assists per game. Freshman guard Ryan Jones is chipping in 9.1 points per game. Pollard scored 21 points in the Hornets seven-point home loss to NCCU one month ago. Jackson and Jones each added 12 points. -EAGLE PRIDE- LAST TIME IT HAPPENED... MEAC 2017-18 (SINCE D1 TRANSITION) PRESEASON POLL MISCELLANEOUS STATS 1.
