Shashi informed me that you agreed to have a photo session with Yanou (French designer) at 12 o'clock tomorrow at the residence. May I confirm with you so that I could make the arrangements.

Wagaye 11 December 1998 Note to the Secretary-General

REQUEST FOR PHOTOGRAPH

During your absence, I received, on the recommendation of Under-Secretary- General Miyet, the French designer Yanou, who is working on a photo project to benefit UNICEF.

As her enclosed letter explains, the project involves photographing various international celebrities with a monogrammed Louis Vuitton soccer ball. A collection of these photos would be sold worldwide by the luggage-maker and the proceeds would go entirely to UNICEF.

At my request JEanou has giveft-me-fQur sampjejihotographs of people you know ~ Henry Kissinger,<1(ucly Giuliarjff (Larry King^d^ackRosen^1- to provide an indication of the quality of thework ofthe pnotogfapher, Xa>ter-tarfibours, and the type of picture they want.

Yanou assures me the actual photograph would only take five minutes of your time, but they would like to take the pciture this week (up to and including Saturday, when she leaves to go back to ). I told them you were only returning on Wednesday and that it would be difficult, but that we would ask you to consider it in aid of a good cause.

Please let me know if you think you can grant them five minutes either in your office this week or at home on Saturday morning. I do realize this is not the best time and leave it entirely up to you. If you prefer to grant them a later date, they may well fly back from Europe just to have you. Please advise.

For instance we photographed Donald Sutherland on Santa Monica's beach with his five puppies at sunset, Billy Friedkin in his office at home, Steve Jones in his pool, Michael Caine on the set of his film in the desert and Dr. Kissinger seated behind a desk in the lobby of the Kempinski Hotel.

The location and the horary would be your decision. We are very flexible and ready to work at any time.

Of course you will have photo approval.

The Secretary-General

Message on the occasion of the "Spirit of Peace" mission EOSG/CENIRAL

We are nearing the end of a tumultuous century, which has seen both the best and worst of human endeavour. Peace spreads in one region, while genocidal fury rages in another. Unprecedented wealth coexists with terrible deprivation. Globalization knits us closer together, while intolerance keeps us apart.

The mandate of the United Nations - "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war", in the memorable words of the Charter - remains as valid and relevant today as it was when adopted in 1945.

We have come to realize that inter-state diplomacy is not enough. We need to act at a deeper level to defuse violent conflicts before they arise.

We have also come to realize that human security implies far more that the mere absence of conflict. It must encompass economic development, social justice, environmental protection for human rights and the rule of law.

The essential ingredients of a genuine culture of peace can only be developed at the level of civil society. That is why the undertaking of a mission like yours is so relevant.

Appropriately called "The Spirit of Peace", your initiative should help us promote and enhance worldwide the United Nations' ultimate goal: the establishment of a conflict- free planet at the turn of the next millennium.
