Among parasites of free-ranging capybaras are soil-, water-, food- and gastropod-borne parasitosis, today considered as opportunistic infections in semiaquatic ecosystems. The overlapping of the capybara’s natural ecological habitats with human and domestic animal activities has unfortunately increased in recent decades, thereby enhancing possible cross- or spillover events of zoonotic parasites. Due to this, three synanthropic wild capybara populations in the Orinoco Basin were studied for the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasite infections. Accordingly, the Orinoco River constitutes a huge tropical watershed with extensive wetlands, marshes, and lakes nourished by the fourth largest river in the world. Unfortunately, this diverse and unique ecosystem has suffered dramatic anthropogenic changes during the last decades because of legal and illegal agroindustrial crop development [7], the expansion of the agricultural frontier due to livestock, illegal mining, logging [8], hunting [6], and wildlife trafficking [9]. Thus, free-ranging capybaras distributed in the human-altered Orinoco Basin are constantly interacting with a plethora of endemic wildlife species, humans, and domestic animals such as horses (Equus caballus), cattle (Bos taurus indicus), chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), dogs (Canis familiaris), and cats (Felis catus). Thus, this demands One Health concept-oriented attention on parasitic infections. In this sense, a particular interplay between humans, animals, and the environ- ment may lead to the emergence and transmission of zoonotic diseases as is highlighted by the increased transmission of wildlife-origin pathogenic agents [10]. Consistently, it seems essential to monitor parasitic infections in synanthropic species such as capybaras within their natural habitats, to identify potential zoonotic parasites and their impact not only on human health but also on domestic animals and endemic wildlife populations. Currently, both endogenous proto- and metazoan parasites have been described in capybaras (Table1) but little attention has been paid to zoonotic infections, particularly soil-, water-, food- and gasteropod-borne parasites. Therefore, the present study aims to describe the gastrointestinal parasite fauna of wild synanthropic capybara populations in the Orinoco Basin. Table 1. Results Overall, thirteen gastrointestinal parasite taxa were found comprising five protozoans of the phyla Apicomplexa, Amoebozoa, and Ciliophora, and eight metazoans of the phyla Nematoda and Platyhelminthes (Class: Cestoda and Trematoda), thereby covering a rather wide range of parasites when compared to previous studies (see Table1). 2.1. Fecal Macroscopical Examination The feces’ gross examination revealed three helminths (i.e., one nematode and two trematodes). Nematodes found in Cinaruco were identified as Protozoophaga obesa female pinworms based on taxonomic traits (see Figure1). The collected specimens had straight caudal extremity and an evident thin tail uncoiled posterior end. The mean morphometric measurements (n = 6) obtained were total body length

Box 5969, Safat, Kuwait 13060 ABSTRACT The eye ¯uke Philophthalmus hegeneri Penner and Fried, 1963 was reared from cercariae developing in the marine snail Cerithium scabridum in Kuwait Bay. Infected snails released megalurous cercariae which readily encysted in characteristically ¯ask-shaped cysts. Adult ¯ukes were recovered from the ocular orbit of experimentally infected domestic ducklings inoculated with excysted metacercariae. The adult and larval stages of the ¯uke are described and compared with those of the other marine-acquired Philophthalmus species. The metacercaria of the Kuwaiti isolate of P. hegeneri diers from those of an American isolate from Batillaria minima in the Gulf of Mexico in the process of encystment, and metacercarial cyst shape resembles those of P. larsoni from a congeneric snail, C. muscarum, from Florida, suggesting a close relationship. The present record signi®cantly extends the known geographical range of P. hegeneri and implicates a new intermediate host. The resultant reproductive saving was estimated for non-infested male and female T, lapillus from Robin Hoods Bay in 1981 and the energy values obtained were compared with estimates of the average energy loss from infested M., laDillus as a result of cercarial production and redial growth. The proportion of the whole body dry mass of infested M, lapillus. individuals contributed by the redial population was generally similar to the gonadal proportion of non-infested femalest but did not follow the same seasonal cycle. The digestive gland of infested dogwhelks was proportionally reduced from that of non-infested females in August only. The growth of redial populations within the hosts through the summer is suggested as a possible cause of host gigantism.

Department of Zoology, University of Sindh, Jamshoro-76080 Corresponding author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT During present study on the helminth parasites of Black Coot, Fulica atra Linnaeus, 1758 (Gruiformes: Rallidae) in Sindh Province of Pakistan, two trematodes of the genus Catatropis Odhner, 1905 were recovered from intestine of host bird. The detailed study of the worms resulted the lack of some diagnostic characteristics for the identification up to the species level. Therefore, these worms are identified up to the generic level. Previously there is no record of the genus Catatropis Odhner, 1905 in the avian host of Pakistan. Keywords: Avian trematode, Catatropis sp., Fulica atra, Sindh, Pakistan. From 7,164 specimens of M. tuberculata collected, 25 (0.35%) were infected by cercariae, which have been morphologically characterized as belonging to the Megalurous group, genus Philophthalmus. Excysted metacercariae were used for successful experimental infection of Gallus gallus domesticus, and adult parasites recovered from the nictitating membranes of chickens were identified asPhilophthalmus gralli. 'eleaans (Rud. 1802) and a list of Plagiorchia species previously recorded in'Britain is given. The life cycle was initially established using L se staEnalie, Chironomus sp. larvae and LACA mice; morphology, intraspecific vari- ation and host specificity-at all levels of the life cycle have been examined and described. Besides L. starnalis, L. paluatris is susceptible to infection with P. elepans while L. enrepra is refractory. Infections cause ex- tensive damage to the digestive gland of L., stapnalis although they do not curtail its life span. Immature and mature specimens of L. stnenalis were infected; the former vere. castrated and the latter con- tinued to reproduce. A. single mother sporocyst of P. ele s pro- duces approximately 650 daughter aporocyats from which develop several hundred thousand xiphidiocercariae. Upon release cercariae are negatively phototropic and negatively geotropic, with-light-and temperature affecting the rate of cercarial emmission. Cercariae encyst-in aquatic arthropods (Chironomus op., Asellus anuaticus and Gamnarus pulex) and precociously in the snail host. Adult P. elegans range in size from 1.04 to 3.89mm by 0.34 to 0.96mm.
