The 2020 season will mark Craig Bohl’s seventh season leading the University of Wyoming Football program and his 18th season as a head coach at the collegiate level. The success that Cowboy Football has enjoyed and the excitement generated around the program under Bohl’s direction is just what UW Athletics Director Tom Burman had hoped for when he hired Bohl. In terms of success, the Cowboys have become regular contenders in the race for the Mountain West Conference title. UW won eight games in 2016, ‘17 and ‘19, hosted the 2016 Mountain West Championship Game, earned three bowl bids in four years and won the 2017 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and 2019 NOVA Home Loans ArizonaA Bowl. In addition in the 2018 season, the Cowboys earned bowl eligibility. The last time that UW had achieved bowl eligibility in four consecutive seasons were the 1996-99 seasons. Wyoming also had two players, linebackers Logan Wilson and Cassh Maluia, selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, marking the fourth consecutive year that WyomingW has had at least one player selected in the NFL Draft and the fifth year out of the past six NFL Drafts that the Pokes have had a player drafted. The excitement surrounding Wyoming Football included the extensive coverage of former Cowboy quarterback Josh Allen, who was selected as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. That marked the highest selection by a Wyoming Cowboy in the history of the program and was the second highest selections by a Mountain West player since Utah’s Alex Smith was selected No. 1 in 2005. Leading up to Allen being drafted, Wyoming’s Pro Day was covered live by both ESPN and the NFL Network. At the conclusion of the 2017 football season and the 2018 NFL Draft, media coverage of Wyoming Football for the past year was estimated by Joyce Julius & Associates at over $159 million. Cowboy linebacker Logan Wilson was one of six national finalists for the 2019 Butkus Award, honoring the nation’s top collegiate linebacker. Wilson earned multiple All-America honors, including being named a First Team All-American by Pro Football Focus. In 2018, Wyoming had two finalists for national awards for the first time in program history. Place-kicker Cooper Rothe was one of three national finalists for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, that honors the nation’s top collegiate place-kicker each year. Free safety Marcus Epps was one of only three national finalists for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on. Epps went on to be drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. For the third and fourth times in Bohl’s tenure as Wyoming’s head coach he had a freshman earn Freshman All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). Cowboy center Keegan Cryder earned the honor in 2018. UW defensive end Solomon Byrd earned the honor in 2019. When Bohl was hired as head football coach at Wyoming, he was open in saying that he wanted to bring Cowboy Football back to a place of national prominence. The Cowboy defense ranked No. 11 in the nation in scoring defense and No. 11 in rushing defense in 2019. Wyoming’s defense also was No. 6 in the country in red-zone defense and scored three defensive touchdowns to rank No. 12 in the FBS. The UW offense ranked No. 10 in the nation in passing yards per completion, were No. 23 in the country in rushing offense and No. 32 in third-down conversions. That combination of offensive and defensive balance led to an 8-5 record and a victory in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl. Wyoming was also one of the best defensive teams in the nation in 2018. The Cowboys ranked No. 19 in the nation in total defense, No. 25 in rushing defense, No. 28 in scoring defense and No. 32 in pass defense. The 2017 season saw the Cowboys post an 8-5 record and finish second in the MW Mountain Division. The Pokes were led by their defense in 2017, ranking No. 1 in the nation in forcing turnovers (38) and leading the Mountain West and ranking No. 9 in the nation in scoring defense, allowing opponents only 17.5 points per game. Wyoming’s defense also ranked No. 1 in fumbles recovered (18), No. 2 in (20), No. 8 in defensive touchdowns scored, 13th in the NCAA in pass defense, and 23rd in total defense. UW placed second in the Mountain Division and captured the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in a convincing 37-14 win over Central Michigan. In 2016, Bohl’s team defeated two Top 25 ranked opponents, was named the National Team of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) for one of those wins and received votes itself in the national polls. Wyoming also captured the Mountain Division title of the Mountain West Conference, earned the right to host the 2016 MW Football Championship Game as the highest ranked team in the conference and was invited to the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. His Cowboys ended the year with an 8-6 record and featured one of the NCAA’s top scoring offenses, averaging 35.9 points per game to rank No. 25 in the nation. Bohl was recognized for his turnaround of Cowboy Football by being named the 2016 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in voting by conference head coaches and media. Two Cowboys earned All-America honors in 2016 in running back Brian Hill and center Chase Roullier. Linebacker Logan Wilson earned Freshman All-America honors in 2016, joining Andrew Wingard, who earned Freshman All-America honors a year earlier. Bohl currently serves on the Coaches Association (AFCA) Board of Trustees, having been elected by a vote of the membership at the 2012 AFCA national convention. He was also appointed to the 13-member NCAA Division I Football Competition Committee in January of 2017. He became a member of the NCAA Football Oversight Committee in August 2020. Bohl, who was part of building National Championship teams at North Dakota State and Nebraska, was introduced by University of Wyoming Athletics Director Tom Burman as the new head football coach of the Wyoming Cowboys on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013. Bohl became the 32nd head football coach in University of Wyoming history. He came to Wyoming after building a national power at North Dakota State as a head coach for 11 seasons from 2003-13. His teams won three consecutive National Championships at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level in 2011, ‘12 and ‘13. NDSU became only the second FCS school in NCAA history to win three consecutive national football titles, tied the FCS record for consecutive wins (24 from 2011-13) and became the first undefeated FCS National Champion since 1996. Not only did Bohl win three national titles at the FCS level, but he was the linebackers coach at his alma mater, Nebraska, when the Huskers won the 1995 and 1997 National Championships. The 2013 NDSU team also set a North Dakota State single-season record for wins, posting a perfect 15-0 record. The Bison became the first undefeated FCS National Champion since Marshall went 15-0 to win the 1996 FCS title. In 2012 and ‘13, Bohl received both The Sports Network Eddie Robinson FCS National Coach of the Year Award and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) FCS National Coach of the Year Award. He became the first coach in the first 27 years of the Eddie Robinson Award to win it in consecutive seasons. In 2013, he also received the Liberty Mutual FCS Coach of the Year Award, which is presented in partnership with the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. His other National Coach of the Year honor came in 2006, when he was recognized by the Football Gazette as the FCS National Coach of the Year and the Northwest Region Coach of the Year. Bohl grew up in Lincoln, Neb., and went on to attend the University of Nebraska where he was a reserve defensive back from 1977 to 1979 under head coach Tom Osborne. Bohl was part of Nebraska’s 1979 Orange Bowl and 1980 Cotton Bowl teams. The 2020 season will be Bohl’s 40th year coaching at the college level. Born July 27, 1958, Bohl will be 62 years old when the 2020 season kicks off. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Nebraska in 1982. Bohl’s family includes wife Leia, and children Mallory and Morgan, Aaron and Elijah.

RECAP: Saturday’s season opener for the Wyoming Cowboys was an emo onal one. On the third play of the game, Wyoming star ng quarterback and team captain Sean Chambers suff ered an ankle injury that required him to be carted off the fi eld. But a er suff ering that drama c loss of their QB, the Cowboys showed incred- ible heart as they fought back from a 22-point defi cit (28-6) with 3:47 remaining in the third quarter to force over me before falling 37-34 in the fi rst over me to the Wolf Pack. The Cowboy defense kept Wyoming in the game in the fi rst half, forcing two Nevada turnovers and making a drama c goal-line stand. At hal ime, UW trailed by only eight points at 14-6. Nevada would come out in the third quarter and score touchdowns on back-to-back drives to take their largest lead at 28-6 late in the third. But from that point forward the Pokes took charge and fought back to e the game 28-28 at the 8:30 mark of the fourth quarter. Nevada retook the lead at 31-28 with 3:26 remaining in the game, but the Cowboys would drive 74 yards in 11 plays on their fi nal drive of the fourth quarter and true freshman place-kicker John Hoyland would make a 42-yard fi eld goal with 23 seconds remaining in regula on to e the game at 31-31 and force over me. In the fi rst over me, Wyoming could not convert a fi rst down and Hoyland would come in to kick a 38-yard fi eld goal, his fourth of the game, to give Wyoming its fi rst lead of the game at 34-31. But Nevada quarterback Carson Strong would fi nd wide receiver Romeo Doubs on a nine-yard touchdown pass to win the game 37-31. A er the game, Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl had this to say about the hard-fought game, including com- men ng about the diffi cult week faced by Nevada head coach Jay Norvell, whose father Merri Norvell passed away earlier this week. “First of all I want to give credit to Nevada,” said Bohl. “I know Coach (Jay) Norvell has gone through a lot this week. I knew his father. I’m sure his team rallied around Coach Norvell. I thought they (Nevada) played well. “We got off to a slow start and there are certainly things we need to work on in all three phases of the game. The desire is there but the execu on needs to improve. We have a lot to play for this year, and we play a good Hawai’i team in Laramie this next week. “Football is a game of momentum. Our guys be- lieved. They didn’t panic. They played with poise, and the momentum started to swing our way. I can’t say enough about our freshman kicker (John Hoyland). I thought he was unbelievable. There are a lot of good things, but there are things we have to work on.”

RECAP: The Wyoming Cowboys came out of the gate fast on Friday night in their 2020 home opener versus the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors. Wyoming’s dynamic rushing a ack and swarming defense resulted in the Cowboys recording a 31-7 win over the Rainbow Warriors in the 25th mee ng between the two teams. Both teams are now 1-1 on the season. It was the ninth consecu ve home win for Wyoming. The Cowboys have a record of 21-6 (.778) in home games since the beginning of the 2016 season. Cowboy junior running back Xazavian Valladay notched his ninth career 100-yard rushing game and fi rst of the 2020 season. He ended the game with 163 rush- ing yards on 32 carries. Valladay also caught two passes for 32 yards to end the night with 195 all-purpose yards. The other Cowboy running back who had an outstanding game was graduate transfer Trey Smith, who ran for 89 yards on 20 carries. Both Valladay and Smith each scored two rushing touchdowns. As a team, the Cowboys ran for 281 yards and had 112 yards passing for 393 yards of total off ense. Wyo- ming’s defense held Hawai’i to 233 yards of total off ense -- 123 rushing yards and 110 passing. The defense also forced two turnovers on the night. Junior linebacker Chad Muma recovered a fumble that led to a Cowboy fi eld goal, giving Wyoming a 10-0 lead in the fi rst quarter. Sophomore linebacker Charles Hicks intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 47 yards to set up a Wyoming touchdown that extended the Pokes’ lead to 24-7. A total of 6,232 fans a ended Friday’s game. Wyo- ming improved its record against Hawai’i to 15 wins and 10 losses. It was the 24th me that the two schools played for the Paniolo Trophy. UW holds the advantage in that por on of the series 15 to nine. The overall series dates back to 1978. Following the game, Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl shared his thought on the game with media over a Zoom press conference. “Trey (Smith) really ran hard tonight and made some excellent runs. X (Xazavian Valladay) has a unique ability to put his foot in the ground, be allusive and he has great balance,” said Bohl. “To have a one-two punch like that really makes a big, big diff erence. “This is one of our trademarks, if we can handle the line of scrimmage, run the football and play good de- fense that is a winning formula.” Asked what he saw from his team’s pass defense on Friday vs. Hawai’i that was diff erent from the defense’s performance the week before against Nevada, Bohl responded, “I think we challenged the receivers more tonight. Last week, I thought we were a li le bit passive. We were also able to eliminate a lot of their (Hawai’i’s) primary runs and that allowed us to get into some dif- ferent looks and pressure the quarterback. It was a combina on of our coverage and our four-man rush.” Bohl was asked if the Charles Hicks’ intercep on felt like a turning point in the game, Bohl said, “I felt like if we could score on that drive it would change the complexion of the game, and it certainly did.”

RECAP: The Wyoming Cowboys came into Thursday night’s 112th Edi on of the “Border War” looking for their fi h consecu ve victory in the series. But a pair of fi rst-quarter turnovers that were converted into 14 points by Colorado State was a defi cit that UW could never overcome on way to a 34-24 loss to the Rams in Fort Collins. There were many outstanding individual perfor- mances on the night for the Cowboys, unfortunately they weren’t enough to balance out not only the turnovers but also an uncharacteris c eight penal es for 83 yards by Wyoming -- several of them coming at cri cal mes to stop drives. Wyoming entered the game ranked No. 4 in the na on in fewest penalty yards per game at 26.5 yards per game the fi rst two weeks of the season, but had 83 yards in penal es on Thursday night. Cowboy head coach Craig Bohl acknowledged that the early turnovers and penal es had a big impact on the game, while also giving credit to the way CSU played. “Colorado State came out with a hard edge and they executed well,” said Bohl. “I think we did some things that were uncharacteris c of us. Typically, we’ve been ahead on the turnover margin and that didn’t occur to- night. And I thought we had way more penal es than we normally do. “When you play a rivalry game you need to be on point and we weren’t. We are going to have to take a hard look at our prepara on. We have to take ownership of our performance and have some hard conversa ons about where we’re at and how we respond.” Asked how diffi cult it was to face the early defi cit the Cowboys found themselves in, Bohl said, “I was con- cerned during that early part of the game that the defi cit could grow to where it would have been insurmountable, but I thought our guys rallied and kept us in the game. But it seemed like every me we rallied back they (CSU) answered.” Wyoming junior running back Xazavian Valladay re- corded his second consecu ve 100-yard rushing game of the season and 10th of his career, rushing for 147 yards on the night. He also surpassed the 2,000-yard career rushing plateau, becoming only the 12th Cowboy in his- tory to accomplish that feat. He now has 2,071 career rushing yards to rank 12th in school history. Redshirt freshman quarterback Levi Williams also had a career best day passing, comple ng 19 of 31 passes (.612) for 321 yards. It was his fi rst 300-yard passing game, but Williams was involved in both fi rst quarter turnovers -- one an intercep on that CSU returned for a pick six and the other a fumble that later led to a touch- down. Senior wide receiver Ayden Eberhardt was the other Cowboy who had a career best night. Eberhardt caught a career high seven passes for a career best 132 yards. It was the fi rst 100-yard receiving game of Eberhardt’s career. Defensively, Wyoming junior middle linebacker Chad Muma led all defenders in the game with a career high 17 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. Senior safety Esaias Gandy recorded nine tackles, including 1.0 sack and 2.5 tackles for loss, which were career highs.
