S Earthworks – Heavenly Bodies – an Expanded Collection
Django Bates - Britische Wundertüte Dienstag, 13
Jazz Collection: Django Bates - britische Wundertüte Dienstag, 13. Oktober 2020, 21.00 – 22.00 Uhr, SRF 2 Kultur Samstag, 17. Zen in the Art of Drumming: Jim Blackley and His Influence on the Jazz Drummers of Canada
ZEN IN THE ART OF DRUMMING: JIM BLACKLEY AND HIS INFLUENCE ON THE JAZZ DRUMMERS OF CANADA GIUSEPPE IANNUZZI A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO JANUARY 2019 © GIUSEPPE IANNUZZI, 2019 ii ABSTRACT The objective of this thesis is to examine how the pedagogy of Jim Blackley (1927- 2017)— the late Scottish-Canadian jazz drummer and educator— influenced several generations of Canadian jazz drummers. Blackley’s seminal publications such as Syncopated Rolls for the Modern Drummer Vol.1 (1961) and The Essence of Jazz Drumming (2001) disavow the traditional instruction of the snare drum rudiments in favour of playing and interpreting musical lines. Consequently, Blackley inculcated in his students the importance of the drummer’s ride cymbal acting as the primary means of stating time and providing the accents, punctuations, and phrases so vital to jazz rhythmic accompaniment. Through emphasizing the development of strong time keeping skills, an awareness of song form, the memorization and vocalization of rhythmic figures and phrases, and the significance of listening carefully to the bass line, chord changes and melody when improvising, Blackley instilled in his students the inviolable tenet of playing the drums musically. Using an ethnographic approach culling data from interviews with Blackley’s former students such as Terry Clarke, Barry Elmes, Duris Maxwell, and others, this thesis will also explore issues of identity construction and construal examining how Blackley’s pedagogy had led his students on an important journey of identity realization. -

A Different Drummer by Pam Lambert. Wall Street Journal
Bill Bruford: A Different Drummer By Pam Lambert. Wall Street Journal. (Eastern edition). New York, N.Y.: Aug 5, 1987. pg. 1 New York -- "I`m not really a blood-and-guts drummer," says Bill Bruford between bites of coffee-shop carrot cake. "There`s nothing wrong with power, and there`s nothing wrong with aggression from the bandstand, but I think what is attractive is control." Over two decades and 30 albums, control has been a hallmark of the style that`s made the British drummer one of the world`s most respected. But through the years his career has also been a search for control of another sort -- control of his talent and the way it would be employed. This quest, coupled with an insatiable appetite for exploration, has taken Bruford from mammoth arenas and the biggest of rock bands, Yes and Genesis, to jazz gigs in the most intimate of clubs. He`s gone from testing the possibilities of electronic percussion with the experimental ensemble King Crimson to recording as half of an acoustic duo. And as the possibilities for a drummer within rock have shrunk -- the 4/4 beat rules the airwaves and most drumming on pop records is done by machines -- Bruford has been turning more and more to jazz. "I consider myself fortunate that I was trying to start a career at a time when you could really be quite musical; it was like a little cottage industry," says the 38-year-old Bruford. He`s talking about the halcyon days just after Sgt. -

2002 Downbeat
Todd Jenkins for Downbeat, written October 2002 appeared May 2003. 1) One major hallmark of the original Earthworks lineup was your creative application of electronic drums, at a time when no one else was using them in a jazz setting. What led you to include them originally, and why have you now discarded them in favor of an acoustic kit? That has drastically changed the perception of what defines Earthworks, yet the band still sounds as original as ever. The background here is that I had spent 7 or 8 years wrestling with this particular beast (electronic drums), in the 80's with King Crimson, and the instrument had just got to the point where it had become interesting. Specifically, the arrival of sampling, MIDI, and the multi-assignment of samples to zone sensitive pads meant the ambitious drummer was technically able to provide the harmonic or chordal background to the music in real time, for the first time. Seemed like a good enough reason to form a jazz group around. I felt the instrument had "grown up" from its early adolescence in pop music, and someone had to treat it like an adult in jazz. Rashly, I volunteered! I remember Jack DeJohnette and Bernard Purdie in front of the bandstand at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1990 both with a look of astonishment mixed with pity. I thought the results were really interesting, but came at a heavy price of many hours spent trying to get one instrument to talk to another, and then the whole lot to work on the gig, having flown halfway across the world. -
